Style | ABV
Hefeweizen |  6.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Hefeweizen is a golden, unfiltered wheat beer. The wheat malt used in this beer lends a citrus-like flavor that is often accentuated with a slice of lemon. Hop bitterness is low and the yeast left in suspension in the beer adds a bread-like quality to the beer.

Thanks to my good buddy Nick for picking this brew up for me during his entrepreneurial dental floss meanderings through Big Sky country.

Faint haze and light bubbling to this hay and brass colored brew. No head or foam-age after the pour.

Faint powdered banana, yeast aroma with some faintly toasted, unmalted wheat grain. But a little bland smelling overall.

Adjuncty bitterness from the middle to the finish. The front of the palate has some nice fruity yeast and toasted grain. But that is quickly dashed by the aforementioned bitterness.

This beer has a nice , dry, yet refreshing pop to the mouthfeel. Easy to drink, just lacking on a lot of other characteristics. Glad I got to try this beer.

now called helio hefeweizen? or is this a new product? hard to tell, no abv on the label of mine and nothing to compare to here. if this is a different brew, someone please correct me. it pours surprisingly clear for an unfiltered beer, bright golden, with a half inch of white head. the nose is a whole lot of wheat malt, a touch of honey, and some fruity yeast, but none of the clove thing going on in so many of these beers nowadays. the flavor is good, its malt profile is czech in nature, golden and dusty and light. there is also some sweetness in the finish, but nothing overbearing. kind of a floral vibe to it as well, very refreshing and easy drinking. the body is super light, too much so in my opinion, more of a golden ale than a hefe in my book, but helio hef may be a different product, as i mentioned. its got good carbonation though, and finishes clean. overall a tasty beer, one of my first from the great state of montana.

Received in a pint glass at a little eatery near Yellowstone.

4.0 A: Moderately hazed green tinted yellow color. Came when I was in the bathroom, so I can't comment much on the head, but it did leave lots of lacing.

2.5 S: A little bit of bubblegum and a touch of clove, but not very hefe-y. Neutral wheat without a lot of complexity and not very clean either.

3.0 T: Pretty much like the nose. Touch of bubblegum and clove, but without a real hefe identity. Wheat flavor is a lot stronger than in the nose though.

3.0 M: Lighter medium to medium body. Good hefe carbonation, but it is a bit bity. Very light creaminess.

2.5 D: Mediocre hefe that is missing most of what I like about the style.

Appearance: amber, medium-large head, and some lacing.

Smell: subtle wheat and grain.

Taste: clove, wheat, and nice malt.

Mouthfeel: medium.

Overall:
While not incredibly complex, this has a lot of good flavor. It goes down smooth.

Red Lodge Hefeweizen...on tap at Red Lodge Mountain

Appearance-pale yellow color, large whispy white head takes over. Overactive carbonation creates a bit too much head but once it settles down it looks fine.

Smell-grain fruit and hops, decent strength in the waft, nothing too out of the ordinary.

Taste/Mouthfeel-grainy up front, small hint of lemon and sour fruit, alcohol is light throughout, nice smoothness, not that muddled like many hefes.

Drinkability-easy drinking, not muddled, flavorful, balanced.

Overall-nice hefe, I'm becoming more and more impressed by this brewery, they are nailing styles.

A: Pours a cloudy golden/yellow color. A two finger white head forms and sticks around a while. Good lace is left behind as well.
S: Citrus, banana, and clove aromas like a good hefe should have. Though, kind of a funky barnyard aroma I get with some Belgian beers. Sour and tart. Really good.
T: Citrus, banana, and clove again. There is a very nice sour and tart flavor as well. Very refreshing. Again, really good.
M/D: A medium body and carbonation. A good creamy texture. Easy and smooth to drink. A great session beer.

This is a great Hefeweizen. This is one that got me into good beer all those years ago. Still, after almost five years of trying many other great beers, this is still top notch. One of the best American made version, and as good as any I have had period.

appearance: The pour into my weizen glass produces a short lived .75" white head. Upon pouring the yeast, the beer shows a cloudy, golden hay color.

smell: Notes of wheat, yeast, and an off, sour graininess. Very lightly hopped. Not fruity and estery, as I would expect a hefeweizen to be.

mouthfeel: The carbonation is on the lighter side of medium, a little low for a hefeweizen. The body is toward the higher end of the light range, just about right. Something about the mouthfeel as a whole is off, probably from the lower carbonation.

taste: There's a dominant wheatiness to the flavor, with a yeastiness right along with it. Doesn't seem to be much more to it, save for a slight esteriness. There's also a slight, sour harshness that I can't really describe, almost like the feeling you get from the aftertaste of a bad shot of bourbon. No hop flavor and just a touch of bitterness. Not bad, but a little off and somewhat watery.

drinkability: Pretty easy drinking, but an average hefe at best. The off, kinda sourness, really detracts from the drinkability.

Acquired in a random trade with loren01. The best by date on the label is unnotched.

This one was hand carried direct from the great state of Montana by my cousin Jeremy. Thanks man! It pours from the 12oz bottle a clear, pale sunshine yellow with a nice bubbly creamy head of white foam. Good start. Aromas of pale wheat along with a mellow infusion of banana and clove notes. A touch peppery, but overall the smell is just lacking a bit.

First sip brings a sweet pale, wheat grain maltiness. A mild mix of cloves, pepper and banana works it's way in along with a big yeasty flavor. Finishes clean with a malty sweetness. I find it to be too sweet overall and lacking in the normal hefe flavors.

Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with a mellow carbonation. Really quite nice and a bit creamy. I could drink a few of these on a hot summer day, it's better than your standard pale wheat ale, but it falls short for a hefeweizen.

A: Pours from bottle a light straw color with plenty of carbonation and a small white head. Carbonation lasted in the glass until the last drink was taken. Slight lacing observed down the glass.
S: Smell is yeasty, good spiciness observed as well.
T: I love the taste of this beer, you can definatly taste the wheat. Its also alot fruitier than most Hefe's. Tastes of banana with some other kind of fruit, maybe pear or apple or something.
M: Just about perfect, I expected it to be a little on the crisp side with all the carbonation but very well balanced.
D: This is an outstanding Hefeweizen, glad to see that you can get a real good Hefe in this area still. It seems that all you see here are Widmer and Pyramid Hefeweizens. Nothing against those 2 beers, but this in my opinion blows the doors off both of them. This is a beer that you really don't have to use a lemon with to make it flavorfull, has plenty of its own.

06/30/05- Purcahsed at Osco Drugs in Billings, MT.

Presentation- 12oz bottle with an unmarked dating strip on the side of the label. Poured into my Ayinger weizen glass.

Appearance- Cloudy golden pour with a nice 3/4 inch creamy head and minor lacing.

Smell- A good amount of sweetness. Some clove and maybe a bit of banana scent.

Taste- Nice and spicy. Light clove and medium banana flavors. Maybe even a bit of nutmeg?

Mouthfeel- Very smooth while going down. Almost creamy. Medium carbonation level.

Drinkability- I've had so many hefe's lately that tasted nothing like a true hefe (Paulaner, Franziskaner, Weistephaner). This was a good one in this case. Nice flavors and an easy drinking hefe.
