Asahi Brewmaster's Select has a thin, off-white head, a clear, somewhat bubbly, amber appearance, and a little bit of lacing left behind. The aroma is of sweet, bready malt, and the flavor is of sweetness, bread crust, cooked carrots, and a slight bittereness. Mouthfeel is light and watery, and Asahi Brewmaster's Select finishes crisp, clean, refreshing, and highly chug-able. Overall, this is worth checking out, but it is overpriced ($11.99 for a six-pack).

I poured this Brewmaster Select Asahi Amber Lager from a 12-oz. bottle into a collins glass because I didn't have any other glassware at the time. It has a a soapy stench, the usual boring light beer smell that's acidic with a vegetable hint, nothing surprising or outstanding. In the glass it barely holds a weak, bubbly head. It has an interesting light amber brown with a yellow frame, looks somewhat like an Amber ale at first glance, yet no cloudiness; the lacing is poor, as in like non-existant.

For a macrobrew pale lager, it has an appropriate level of carbonation and burn. The finish, though tasting good, feels boring, like the water run-off from a bowl of oatmeal. The taste really is not too bad, if you can get past the weird soapy flavor, it has an enjoyable but short-lived, grainy, almost wheat finish. It is disappointingly free from the bitterness of hops and the shock of alcohol. To compare it to its appropriate competition, it is superior in flavor to Coors, Sapporo, Kirin, Bud Light and definitely Miller Light without being hardly as refreshing.

Overall, this beer is okay for a light mass-produced lager. Although I enjoyed the overall color, the lacing was pathetic and the head was quick to dissipate. It does smell pretty bad, but the flavor is generally superior to most big name, mass-produced American lagers. Despite being grossly tangy, I enjoyed the finishing wheat taste to the competition's regular nastiness. I recommend drinking this beer slightly below room temperature, roughly between 55 and 65 degrees fahrenheit, to help emphasize its strengths, and if not at that temperature than icy cold to help cover up the gross soapy, tangy vegetable flavor. I would probably recommend it over any other light, vastly marketed Japanese or American macrobrew.

The label on this says it is an amber ale (in English). An interesting beer. It's extremely toasty and malty on the nose with a tangy malty thing on the flavor as well. This beer seems like they were going for something a bit different than the standard yellow stuff Asahi normally puts out. Did they accomplish something? Sure. It's a bit light for me, but I realize that this beer is geared more towards a mass market that is used to much lighter beers.

Ordered an Asahi while out eating Sushi, and to my suprise I got the Asahi Select, which wasn't half bad. The label says it is an Amber Lager, however it doesn't look very amber, more of a deep gold. Decent foamy head. Smells a bit malty, with some vinous fruit notes, mostly clean.

The taste is light and malty, and there is a distinct apple juice character. Finishes without much hop balance. It's a bit one dimensional in that respect, but much better than an American Macro lager. Alcohol seems low. The mouthfeel is decent, medium bodied with sharp carbonation.

Overall a decent beer, and if I was faced with a choice of typical gold Lagers to order with Sushi, I would choose this again. Any other time or place, however, I would probably overlook it.

The beer pours an amber color with a white head. The aroma is a mix of grain and toffee with not too much else going on. Fairly bland smelling. The flavor is also bland. Other than a ton of sweet, sugary grain, I get next to nothing. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. The beer is not offensive, but there are really no positives to be found here. Not one to seek out.

Appears a transparent golden amber with a smallish bone head of brief duration.

Smell: average quality but not average quantity. Aroma is like a pilsner with some odd additions I can't identify, but in the floral/fruity area. Hints of toffee and bread.

Taste largely follows aroma but more fruity than floral. Sweet balance. Weak finish and aftertaste -- one factor that encourages consumption with a meal rather on its own.

Mouthfeel: medium-light bodied; semi-dry and lightly crisp on the finish; good carbonation.

O - a bit different. Worth a try with a meal.

Asahi Select pours out of the bottle as a rich amber color with a bit of orange in a certain light. The smell of the beer is a bit yeasty, and has a good about of malt aromas too. There really isn't a whole lot of hop aroma at all. The flavor of the beer reminds me a little bit of a nut brown ale. It's also got an earthy flavor of dirt and wood. No hop bitterness from what I can tell in the flavor. The aftertaste is malty and dry. The mouthfeel just isn't on target for me. I think it's a little on the flat side which is a little disappointing. I wouldn't need to buy this beer again, but it was nice to try.

The select is defiantly a step up from the Asahi Dry. There is some more color to this beer. It has a darker yellow color and the white head shows up at first. Then it disappears quickly. I don't pick up anything on the nose but some malt is present on the palate that adds a little sweetness. There is no finish on this beer. If you had some spicy Asian foods to pair this beer with it might not be bad. It defiantly would not compete with the flavors of the food but it does not do well standing alone.

Nice japanese place just off union square in manhattan, and they had this on their menu so every chance is a good one for a new beer.

pour is dark brown, a bit cloudy with a very thin tan head, some bubbles within but really nothing out of the ordinary...along the lines of a modelo or so.

Smell is malty by far, no hoppy presence there. sweet to the nose and to the palate, bit of a creamy feel somewhere there. very moderate bitter finale, if any at all. the malt grain feel is omnipresent.

decent, not fantastic.

From a beers of the world gift box.
Color is gold with a hint of orange. Head disappears into nothing.
Smell is almost nonexistent.
Taste is not bad but not really good either. A little malt flavor but finishes very watery.
This beer is just plain and maybe forgettable to me. It is an easy drink but not much to it.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a caramel color with a small head. There is a strong smell of malts, not much else. Taste is also primarilly of malts, some notes of hops. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and has good drinkability. Overall this makes for a good quality beer.

Appears a semi transparent gold with a small white cap that quickly fizzles out. Tiny speckles of lacing stick to the sides of the glass.
Smell is of malted barley, caramel, light toffee, light nuts, & biscuit.
Taste is of the aromas with a nutty, malty, Munich, and caramel jumping right out. Nice!
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, sweet up front and semi dry on the crisp finish.
I would enjoy a sixer of these.

Hmm... a Euro Pale Lager from Japan. Not sure what to think, at first, so let's let the beer tell its tale.

This beer gave me a half finger, fast and fizzy head atop a clear light amber body. Noisy, fizzy heads make me think seltzer water.

Aroma... hey, not too bad. Slightly skunky hops, but not surprising for the style. I get skunkiness off most lagers. However, there was a nice medium bodied malt base that took me by surprise.

Alas, the taste did not follow the smell. Light malts, a hint of hops, but overall very weak. Not a pleasant experience, when you want a good beer... kind of like asking for grade A dark maple syrup and getting sugar-free Log Cabin.

Mouthfeel was thin and watery, like seltzer. The head gave it away.

Below average drinkability, but it was worth trying, at least. Better than Bud Select, and if I was doing yard work, I wouldn't turn it down.

From a 12oz brown bottle - Pours a clear pale orange. Not pretty too all. Smells of corn and light malt. Below average carbonation. First sip is almost flavorless with just a tad of hops and malts ...almost water like. I can not imagine consuming this product.

This Canadian lager with the Japanese name pours out exposing an Octoberfest-like color that preps the tastebuds for an upcoming malty delight. Unfortunately it doesn't deliver. I guess it isn't that bad of a brew after two of these, but I'll never buy it again. It's a bit thin and makes me appreciate the mainstays that reside in my frig. Kinda reminds me of xx xx, an old high school tease I knew. She was a beaut and I enjoyed my time with her, but she ultimately left me unsatisfied.

Appearance: Pours a clear, amber body with a small, fizzy white head. Endlessly effervescent!

Smell: Generally light aroma of toasted grains, cereal, with just a hint of hops.

Taste: Toasted maltiness, decent amount of sweetness, and a distinct taste of husks. Light bitterness. Slight spiciness and a bit of grain astringency in the crisp finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Lively carbonation. Decidedly watery mouthfeel.

Drinkability: All graininess aside, it's not so bad and shows way more character than the rest of the Asahi line-up.

Picked this up at Quick 6 West, poured cold from the 12oz brown bottle w/out freshness date into my lager mug.

A -The color of bourbon w/ excellent clarity, the head is bone whit w/ a dishsoap type appearance

S - There is a sort of fruitiness w/ a rice-like lager aroma w/ a subtle woody hop scent

M - crisp, clean w/ a mild level of carbonation. Malty and light in feel.

T - There is a bit of malt above the average japanese lager as it is slightly darker w/ a hint of twiggy hops w/ a slight rice syrup taste, but other than that I would say 'select' is an unnecessary adjective. I think it is ok for a dry lager but the flavor seems to fall flat. I could probably find other attributes, but this seems pretty average taste-wise overall after 12oz.

D - Not one I would recommend, I would probably drink it again but not seek it out - it is just alright.

Upon the pour, a golden bronze color with an average head, creamy white, and after its erosion, the lace forms a thin concealing sheet. Nose is sweet malt, a very mild hint of hops; start is malt sweet with a touch of spicy bitterness at the back, light to medium feel. Prickly acidity, hops light but present, very dry lingering aftertaste, a drinkable beer, and one suited for a hot day, when the lawn needs a trim, or in my case when I wash off the rocks, desert landscape don’t you know. Lol

I don't get the good reviews on this beer. The color is fairly pleasing for what it is, pretty ambery, but it tastes like water. There's perhaps a bit of malty sweetness but it doesn't really taste like anything. It's easy to drink because of this but there's not anything going on at all. I won't be buying this again.

edit: i'm having another one about 24 hours later and am tasting a lot more so i don't know what exactly was going on with my tastebuds last night. it doesn't taste like water at all right now, it tastes terrible. i doubt it could have gotten this much worse in one day.

This one is pretty dark and attractive looking for the category; nice copper color that pours a decent head which doesn't last but leaves some lacing.

Smells of sweet slightly roasted malt, distinctly caramel note.

Soft and smooth malty flavor thats balanced by a slight dryness throughout, getting a bit drier on the finish; highly carbonated, but no stinging bubbles...

I find it hard to talk about taste without the mouthfeel, as the MF makes up a good amount of the overall taste impression on these Euro pale lagers. Overall, this was one of the less drinkable EPL's in my flight.

What are they doing? This beer is all kinds of wrong. The beer falls somewhere between a watery amber or a horribly caramelized lager. Though a mild toasty, syrupy-sweet not persists, it comes across like a weak (watery) cola. There is not enough substance or body to firm the beer up, leaving a grainy-sweet flavor and feel on the palate. The beer looks like watery cola, with low carbonation and no real retention. Simply not a good beer at all.

By far my favorite Asian Beer. Poured into a pint glass, from a 12oz. bottle. This beer poured light brown, leaving a 1/4 inch head, that faded to barely anything, but left some nice lacing on the glass. The aroma is very faint. What there is, is slighty sweet. The mouthfeel is light, but whats expected from a lager. The taste is like water, but with a slight caramel flavor. Not as bad as it sounds, but thats the best way to describe it. This is more of a beer to have on a hot summer day, as opposed to something to get you through a cold winter night. A great starter to a session, but not for the duration.

Pours bronze/amber with 2 fingers of white head. Great lacing & good head retention

S: A hint malt & some mustyness, a little sweet malt & caramel creep in as it warms

T: A hint a of caramel malt sweetness & then a little fruit & grain. A little choclate sneaks in & then citrus peel (lemon). Doesn't tie together very well at all.

MF: Medium bodied, a little prickly in the carbonation& balanced okay

Drank okay, better than most japanse beers I've had on the mainland (still love sapporro black in the can). Try this with an open mind
