Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Had a small tan head that dissipated into a thin collar. It was dark with deep mahogany highlights. The aroma was very weak with roasted malts. The taste was nutty and alot better than I expected after the disappointing aroma. Goes down smooth and had a bit of smoky taste to it. Similar to a schwarzbier but weaker. Overall a decent beer that I could see trying in a Japanese restaurant if nothing better around. (3.5, RB, T, O)

Look: Black with traces of red throughout. Hard pour yields a 1 inch tan head with ok retention

Smell: Bready yeast that Japanese beers seem to have is upfront. HInts of chocolate on the backend

Taste: Flavor is kind of sweet typical of Japanese beers which since its a dark beer I was hoping it wasnt going to be overly sweet. Hints of dark fruits on the backend

Mouthfeel: A bit thin and medium carbonation

Overall: I was really hoping for more with this one but the flavor was of a typical japanese beer which I am not really a fan of.

Not really black, but a deep garnet color. Thick tan head composed of ultra-fine bubbles, lots of irregular broken lace. Rich dark malt aroma with hints of dark fruits. Taste is slightly tart, lots of maltiness and a black bread flavor, finishes crisp and dry with just a hint of bitterness. Not too complex in character, but very pleasing.

On-Tap at local pub in Fussa, Japan.

A: Served a very dark brown color with a good head that slowly fades.

S: Aroma is of roasted malt with a hint of coffee and some sweetness.

T: Has a nice malt flavor with a touch of chocolate sweetness and a bit of bitterness.

F: Fairly full body, very smooth and creamy.

D: This is a good easy drinker. This beer is best from the tap. One of my go to beers when working in Japan.

Nose is malty and dark fruity with some toast, nut, and caramel. Slightly sour. Smells pretty good... kind of like a Schwartzbier.

Pours a very, very dark brown (~44 srm), fair clarity, moderate head with fairly long lasting retention. Looks good.

Malty and dark fruit. Lots of dry roast accompanied by sweet, ripe fruit. A little bitter, and a little sour. Some chocolate, some deep woody roast. A little creamy. Finishes slightly dry and nutty. Tastes pretty good. Feels pretty good.

Impressively good considering the other, more common Asahi beer availible. I like it, and would recommend it to people interested in trying a bolder beer.

It smells wonderful. Candy and sweet. Strangely so. Almost black with a off-white fluffy head that almost held. It's suprisingly thick for the lighter taste. Slightly sweet.

this could compete with the very best from Munich if not for the slightly sour-bitter taste which lingers in the aftertaste. Ends up tasting like an unintended fusion between a Munich dark and a stout...of course this could be due to the rather long trip from Japan. A pleasant beer, overall, much preferable to other supermarket brands.

Found this in a cooler of a Korean grocery. Never seen it before.

A: Black in color, but a thin black, somewhat translucent. Forms a moderate sized tan head. Decent retention, but does eventually fall to a thick ring around the edge.

S: Aroma is sweet and roasty. There is a slight milk-stout quality to the beer.

T: Taste reminds me of a sweet, light, black IPA. Roasty malts. Mild sweetness. Chocolate. A bit of dark fruit.

M: On the lighter side of medium. Low bitterness. Low carbonation.

O: An interesting find. Not a bad beer. Rather approachable. But nothing too complex or exciting either.

When I was an exchange student in Japan, Asahi was my brand. They had a vending machine on the corner. Anyway, I don't often find it in the Texas Hill Country. I've never had an Kuronama before, so...

A - Pours up black with dark ruby highlights. The thin dense head dissipates quickly lacing up the sides of the glass. Looks good already.

S - Very subtle hint of roasted malts. No hops detected.

T - There's a hint of sweetness at the start, then is replaced with a subtle coffee like roasted flavor. Not overwhelming. Subtle.

M - It's on the thin side, but good.

D - The roasted malt lingers but doesn't overwhelm my palate. Three or four of these in a row is possible. If it wasn't $15 a 6 pack!

This is a good black lager.

Deep brown, almost black, medium-big tan head steadily shrinks.

Aroma is toasty, hint of burnt toast & prunes but all very light.

Taste clean, light but tasty dark toast, hint of prunes & wine, light zesty bitterness. It's not complex, flavour is light but it's firm with some depth, a very good drinkable dark lager, clean with nice light bitterness to back it up.

My friend mentioned this beer in an email chat we were having and I happened see it at the liquor store a few hours later, so I picked up a 6-pack.

Wasn't sure what to expect, but poured one into my pint and tried to determine how black it was. It's filtered, but still very hard to see through that super-dark brown color. The head, which was thick and foamy but didn't last that long and wasn't lacy, didn't give away too much from its smell. I could make out only a little bit of the smell of roasted malt, and not much else. It took a sip expecting a strong flavor but was surprised to find a roasty-malty sweetness with little bitter hoppiness. The carbonation is medium, and the flavor doesn't linger too long. I took another sip, and another, and another. After 3 beers, I still feel like I could drink another 12. Did not expect such drinkability from such a dark colored beer. All in all the flavor is not something that would make me drool, but the beer was a great was to relax this evening and I would buy it again.

poured from a bottle into a whiskey glass as provided by a restaurant. it had a date on it of 08/2007, but i'm not sure if that was a brewed on or fresh before date. also it was brewed in japan and then imported to the u.s.

A - black in color, but not too deep and not too thick looking. it was hard to get any sort of head on this one.

S - the smell reminded me a bit of raw meat.

T - it's not too bad. a bit roasty, but lightly so. actually about what i expected of this japanese black beer.

M - a bit light on the tongue with a fair bit of carbonation.

D - this is quite drinkable and would be a good choice if out at a japanese restaurant and it's available. especially in america i'd avoid the kirin and asashi that are brewed domestically and the sapporo that's imported from canada. yebisu is now being imported and is a nice option when available, and i'd put this on the list of beers to order if available as well.

Has a dark black body that's not completely opaque and a nice beige top. It has a distinct aroma of a nice dark toasted malt. Tastes has hints of coffee and cocoa; nothing too sweet or too bitter. Not too thin either. Definitely one of the better asian brews.

A-Lighter black, the beer is black but you can see through it, its between a very dark brown and a lighter black. The head is not white it is yellow

S-Roasted Malt, brown sugar and back notes of vanilla and cloves

T-Roasted Malts, brown sugar and a finishes a little bitter. But the bitterness goes away after a few minutes. A little bit watery

M-Smooth not very carbonated at all, quite similar to the mouthfeel of Guinness except its not a nitro-can

D-Not bad its easy to down fast because of the lack of carbonation but I don't think I would have more than 2 or 3

Overall one of the better dark asian beers i've had (I know Asia does not produce many) but overall a big surprise. I wasn't expecting much from this beer but its actually quite nice. I wouldn't drink it religiously like Guinness but it would be nice to drink it once in a while

Poured into a pilsner glass.

Pours a clear coffee black. Brew has a very small light tan head. Nearly no head, wispy layer sits around the edges. No lace at all. Meh - Average at best looks.

Brew smells of faint coffee, roasted nuts, some barley. Average nose.

Brew is smooth and has a nice medium mouthfeel. Sweet roasted malts, coffee, roasted nuts. Maybe a slight bit of earthy hops in there as well. Finishes smooth and clean. Good tasting brew.

Very drinkable stuff here, nothing but a simple good drinking sessionable dark brew here. Sometimes thats all you need. Good stuff.

11.2 oz 2009 bottle served in a pint glass

Clear dark mahogany on pour but nearly black in glass. 1 finger of tan head disappeared very quickly leaving no lacing or even a ring.

aroma: Sweet medium roasted malt and molasses. Somewhat floral with hints of dark bread and dark fruits. Approaches 4.5.

Taste follows aroma, allow not as sweet as aroma. Elements of rice or corn?

M - medium-light carbonation; medium body. A bit of tongue bite; given the ABV and sparse hops, this must be a rather high acidity.

O - a drinkable and tasty brew. Aroma is the strong point IMO.

Very dark brown to black with a nice beige head. Even a bit of lacing evident.
Smells of dark malt, caramel and bread.
Taste has more dark-roasted malt flavor, a bit of sourness and a dry finish. Very smooth mouth feel but sort of a thin body.
Very good session beer; nicely drinkable.

Good effort from Asahi, especially compared to the mass-market stuff.

The look was dark black with a mocha head.
The aroma of malts, chocolate and a touch of fruit hints.

The taste starts off with a chocolate caramel flavor which is then followed by some toffee notes. Some hops are present.I also detected some light fruit flavors.

The feel was high carbonation and a medium body.

Notes: A pretty good beer. I liked the taste and it was a lot like the German dark lagers.
