When in sushi, you drank sushi thangs.

Coca cola head, coca cola beer - but not bad. Maybe this is the Mexican coke of beers (sans high fructose corn syrup, insert cane sugar - the "real stuff"). Aite enough when I'm macking down some toro and mackerel, but that's about it.

Holla, my children.

A-dark brown with ruby hints and a light tan head and a little lacing

S-roasted malt, dark fruit, caramel, hint of chocolate

T-roasted malt, caramel, raisins, little chocolate, mild bitterness in the finish

F-light to medium body with moderate carbonation, smooth

O-OK but a little on the thin side and lacks robustness in flavor

A: The beer is clear but very dark garnet red in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high tan colored head that died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface, a collar around the edge, and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light aromas of dark malts are present in the nose along with some hints of caramel and nuts.
T: The taste has flavors of nutty and caramel malts with hints of cola; there are some hints of initial sweetness which are then followed by a slight amount of bitterness.
M: It feels light-bodied, a little watery and a bit smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is extremely easy to drink and can be considered sessionable.

334cl bottle poured @ home into a Westmalle chalice during October 2012, just after it's best before date.

Deep ruby red body with thinning tanned head on top: the head becoming a wisp and collar a bit too quickly for my liking.

Struggled to find any aroma at all: hints of maltiness as it warmed I suppose.

The taste was too close towards a Pepsi Cola with alcohol for me. Wasn't impressed at all. It had almost the same texture and body feel as well.

A 334ml bottle with a BB of Oct 2012. Purchased from a supermarket some time back. Imported from Japan - a pleasant surprise as Asahi Super Dry lager is contract brewed over here. The bottle cap says 'munich type', and the ingredients include maize and rice.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. A deep reddish-brown hue that appears black unless held to the light. Low carbonation. Yields a huge head of creamy tan foam that lasts for a while before reducing to a thin surface layer. Aroma of sweet dark malt with notes of caramel, dried fruit, a hint of brown sugar, faint chocolate and mild stewed hops. Not bad.

Tastes of sweet dark malt with a mild bitter finish. Notes of roasted grain, caramel, dried fruit, brown sugar and stewed hops. Whispers of chocolate and coffee aromas in the background. Quite dry, with a restrained bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and thick, with light, tingly carbonation. Aftertaste of sweet dark malt and hints of dried fruit.

A decent dark lager, particularly coming from such a large brewery. It looks great, and the aroma is relatively complex. The flavour is OK but lacklustre - some vitality is missing . Nice, smooth body. Pleasant and easy-drinking; I could imagine having this again. Worth trying.

A black beer with a bubbly, tan brown coloured head on top that settles as a thin, patchy lacing after about a minute.

Very dark with lots of strong malts coming through with a good amount of chocolate and toffee. It also has some spice, a sweet sugar aroma and a touch of nut with some bread and very light alcohol right at the end.

Strong roasted barely flavour to begin with along with some nice roasted malts and good amounts of spice. There is a some mild alcohol notes and and a nice, rich chocolate flavour to it.

Light side of medium bodied with a nice amount of spice to it and good, solid carbonation and a nice tang to it.

An excellent beer all round without really excelling in any one area individually. The flavours and aroma were well balanced and complimented each other quite well without overpowering you and the drink was very smooth.

Pours a nearly opaque very dark brown with an even, tan head. Head retention is average. Aroma is comprised of prune liquer and Belgian yeast. Flavor is quite similar to Guiness Extra Stout. Prune and coffee liquers are most prominent. Finish is smooth, but abrupt. Decent beer.

Asahi Black has a thick, beige head and a clear, dark red appearance, with lots of streaming bubbles and good, thick lacing. The aroma is of sweet, dark, sugary malt and grain husks. Taste is of dark-roasted malts, sweetness, dark cherries, grain husks, cream, cocoa powder, and some bitterness. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Asahi Black finishes crisp, clean, refreshing, and mostly dry. This bottle was stamped 10/2008, but still, this was excellent.

Black in body with reddish tints when brought to the light. Beige head rests on top and slowly fades. Real nice aroma of toffee, slight gingerbread, and faint chocolate. Mild flavors that are bready, toffee, some earth, herbal/slightly woody hop presence, faint cocoa hints. Light in body with light carbonation. A subtle and enjoyable stout. Not nearly as bad as I thought this was going to be.

Pours a lovely pitch black body but I would never have guessed that the Japanese would give such good head, tan and big and proud.

Lovely malt smells and a hint of toffee.

The taste is dark indeed malty and a hint of liquorice slightly sweet but just slightest bitterness on the way out of the door not much else though.

A very thin mouthfeel but good carbonation.

I guess if I found myself in the land of the rising sun, I would be supping this, quite good, indeed worth trying

Forms an easy head and keeps a fine line of head for the duration of the glass this is black but with many reddish brown highlights. Medium roasty flavour, some sweetness and a quick dash of treacle but slightly on the dilute side. Thinnish and easy drinking. Reminscent of Labatt Velevet Cream Porter but without the shrilling zing.
Terribly OK.
This beer has been terribly miscateogrised on BA. A bottom fermented black lager is as much an English Stout as sake. Total BS.

Drank a bottle before sushi the other day.

A: Deep dark brown body, with hints of red when held to light. Kinda like Coca-Cola. From a hard pour into a standard pint glass produced a 2 fingered off white head with decent retention and some lacing.

S: Light malts, grains, very little hop profile.

T: Semi-sweet chocolate malts are at the forefront, followed by grains and subtle hints of bitter hops.

M: Pretty light for the variety, low carbonation.

O: I enjoyed the brew and it accompanied my lunch nicely. One of the better Japanese beers I have had to date.

Look: Black with traces of red throughout. Hard pour yields a 1 inch tan head with ok retention

Smell: Bready yeast that Japanese beers seem to have is upfront. HInts of chocolate on the backend

Taste: Flavor is kind of sweet typical of Japanese beers which since its a dark beer I was hoping it wasnt going to be overly sweet. Hints of dark fruits on the backend

Mouthfeel: A bit thin and medium carbonation

Overall: I was really hoping for more with this one but the flavor was of a typical japanese beer which I am not really a fan of.

The beer pours a dark brown to black color with a tan head. The aroma is a mix of cocoa and roasted malt. Smells a bit like a stout and nothing like I expected. The flavor is also stout-like. I get a lot of chocolate and roasted malt, mixed with some light coffee and milky lactose notes. Overall, this reminds me a lot of a milk stout. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

334ml bottle poured into a 16oz pint glass.

A - Big, billowy mocha head off the pour. Dark brown-black with a lot of ruby highlights. Head settles nicely.

S - Dark, roasty malt and molasses with some brown sugar sweetness.

T - A lot of roasted malt creating a light bitterness in the aftertaste. A little thin to be honest. Still pretty strong on the molasses, but the brown sugar and dark chocolate sweetness backed off a lot. Fairly easy to drink, but nothing really exceptional here.

M - Pretty smooth, without a ton of carbonation. Body is surprisingly thin and feels a little watered down.

D - Lacks something in the flavor profile. I'm usually not a fan of really bitter flavors, but even this was a little tame for me. A nice drinkable stout, but nothing fantastic.

Had this beer with some veggie sushi. It paired nicely with the spiciness of the roll and the umami of the shoyu. If you like stouts, this is a safe bet.

I'd love to try it on draft, and I wish it wasn't so expensive (maybe that was just the place I got it-- I paid $5.50 for a bottle-- but I was just glad to have a stout in a sushi place, which I wasn't expecting).

The maltiness was awesome, and it didn't have the Pine-Sol hoppy tinge at the end like some "stouts" do (I'm looking at you, Storm King).

Poured from a 334ml bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a dark black colour with a small head. No lacing.

Smells strongly of malts, a bit skunky too.

Taste is mostly a more malty version of regular Asahi. Still refreshing yet more wholesome and with more taste.

Overall an alright beer.

This isn't up to the rather impressive Asahi Stout. The label says, "Munich Style", so maybe it's a Svartzbeer.

Pours a very deep brown, with a 1cm tan head. I had some lacing, but the viscosity of the beer made it rather drippy looking.

Th aroma is quite fine: strong molasses aroma mixed with sweet malt.

The malt isn't apparent in the flavor, just molasses and an alcoholic hghi note. Very smooth, and it went well both with steak and a rich desert.

The mouthfeel is medium and it leaves some stickiness on the lips.

Good, but not the best Japanese mass market dark beer. If you have a choice, the Stout is better.

11.2 oz 2009 bottle served in a pint glass

Clear dark mahogany on pour but nearly black in glass. 1 finger of tan head disappeared very quickly leaving no lacing or even a ring.

aroma: Sweet medium roasted malt and molasses. Somewhat floral with hints of dark bread and dark fruits. Approaches 4.5.

Taste follows aroma, allow not as sweet as aroma. Elements of rice or corn?

M - medium-light carbonation; medium body. A bit of tongue bite; given the ABV and sparse hops, this must be a rather high acidity.

O - a drinkable and tasty brew. Aroma is the strong point IMO.

I kind of like Japanese lagers, so i figured I'd try something a bit different from one of Japan's biggest brewers.

It pours a very dark ruby colour with a nice foamy head that quickly settles down to a thin layer over the beer.

The smell is delicious! Nice and roasty with a hint of chocolate, but nothing overpowering.

The flavour is light but the roasty character is present the whole way through. It is slightly sweet which is nice as well. It doesn't have too much hop bite, which makes it "warmer" than other lagers. I would say this is an excellent beer to use when introducing people to dark beers. It is highly drinkable while having all the nice qualities of a dark lager.

Second beer this evening. I'm a person who has just developed a taste for dark beers, so thought I'd try out this one. Looking at the ingredients, could barely make out a word that said rice Think I've got something for Japanese beers today. Haha. Beer is quite nice, smells like coffee and a little hint of caramel.

This one poured a great thick head, but it went down soon after. There's a nice small little head to protect your beer from getting exposed to air, so I'm quite glad that the head retained. The beer tasted smooth, quite sweet (not like the sugary sweet) and the roasted character definitely came through. Sour aftertaste reminds me of a Petrus Dubbel Bruin. This one is just to tell someone the little sourness, not to place it side by side against a nice Belgian.

Not that I'd buy this again, but still its a good drink.

It pours a tempting cola brown, nearly opaque, with a thin tan head - but the latter may be an artifact of the waitress’ pour. Aroma is crisp and malty with hints of molasses and caramel. Flavor is crisp and malty, like a typical lager but with a stout-like undertone of molasses and a hint of smoke. Texture is fairly smooth and tingly, rather typical. A good one to have at a Japanese restaurant.

Poured into a pilsner glass.

Pours a clear coffee black. Brew has a very small light tan head. Nearly no head, wispy layer sits around the edges. No lace at all. Meh - Average at best looks.

Brew smells of faint coffee, roasted nuts, some barley. Average nose.

Brew is smooth and has a nice medium mouthfeel. Sweet roasted malts, coffee, roasted nuts. Maybe a slight bit of earthy hops in there as well. Finishes smooth and clean. Good tasting brew.

Very drinkable stuff here, nothing but a simple good drinking sessionable dark brew here. Sometimes thats all you need. Good stuff.

Picked up a bottle at EuroMarket in Queens. I wasn't sure what to expect here, but it's basically a classic, inoffensive dark lager with a hint of roasted malt. There was a smooth body with just a little more weight than a standard lager. It's sweet up front with a dry finish. Not a bad beer.
