I like this place most for the staff. Ian (the owner) is super friendly (offered me his beer book to borrow) and knows about the beers he stocks. He's good at recommending beers for you. They have a good selection of domestic microbrews and they do have a decent selection of imports; you can get excellent trappist brews there. Like most places, they have a make your own six pack and Ian usually will break up any packs that aren't in the make-your-own area. Also, there are select beers in the cooler if you can't wait to drink your purchase. All in all, I definitely go there for my beer when I am near Ashland.

The Caboose is a fairly small beer, wine, cheese and other snack shop in Ashland, VA. The Caboose mainly focuses on beer and wine, but also sells fresh cheese, for all the wine and cheese lovers out there.

Quality: The quality of the beer has never been an issue. I havent had a problem with out of date bottles or skunked bottles that I've bought there. I've never ordered any of the cheese, but from what I can tell, it also appears to be of very good quality.

Service: The service here is excellent. They do wine tastings every friday night and BEER tastings on the first friday of the month. I love a beer store that offers beer tastings. The beer and wine people are also quite knowledgeable about their product and can offer some good suggestions if need be. They also offer tastes of any cheese you'd like to purchase before you but it. Overall the service is top notch.

Selection: The selection of wine and cheese seems to be more extensive than the selection of beer. However, they do have a pretty good selection of beer. Most beers offered are American Craft beers and the imports tend to be belgium abbys. If you're looking for a good American Craft beer, you will be able to find one, but dont expect to find any beer under the sun. Smaller west coast brews arent much of an option here, and if that's what you're looking for than you'd have to try a bigger place. While the selection may be limited, the beers that they do offer are high quality American Craft beers. So anyone looking for a quality American Craft beer will definitly be able to find one at the Caboose.

Value: The prices for beer are very reasonable. They offer mix and match 6 packs along with some sixers of the more local beers. I havent seen any prices that would turn me off to the place and most prices are on par for the beer.

Overall: Overall the Caboose is a nice small scale beer store that has a nice wine and cheese area. If you're looking for one stop shopping, and have a significant other that wants to get some wine or cheese than the Caboose is the way to go. Overall the price is reasonable, the service is exceptional, and the selection is good in the way of American Craft beers. I'd recommend stopping by, especially on the first friday of the month for the beer tasting.

Been here three or four times since I interned at Prince William Forest for the summer a couple years ago. Located on the far side of the tracks in a quaint railroad-centric downtown.

quality: None of the dates I checked were behind, and all beers have proven themselves quality upon opening. In fact, when I was worried about the age of the last six-pack of Eggenberg Pils, the shopkeep checked the computer and let me know that that case had come in only a month ago.

service: Always quality...see above.

selection: The selection could certainly be larger, but it is very quality and the prices are always fair. On this trip, I picked up some Stone 07-07-07, a couple Smuttynose singles, and a sixer of Eggenberg Pils. A range of Legend bombers are available, and I also noted Raison D'Extra, Third Coast Old Ale singles, and various Stone products.

Stopped by here on my way back from a trip to Richmond (early December). Being from WV I have to stop and stock up on good beer when I get the chance.

When I was there they had a very nice selection of bottles to chose from- not a huge selection but plenty of quality stuff. The staff was very nice and eager to help with any questions that I had. All of the beer seemed reasonably new and very well priced.
A very nice place and I will be sure to stop back in next time I am in the area. Just wish I would have bought more when I was there...

What a wonderful store. Stopped by for the first time this evening and picked up a couple of beers I'd not seen lately at Wine & Beer in Westpark (Stone Ruination and Rogue Brutal Bitter). Talked to the guy working the store for a few minutes and wound up walking out with a free bottle of SN Bigfoot from 2000. If you're in the Richmond area, you owe it to yourself to drop by. The selection was pretty good, probably about three quarters the amount of Wine & Beer's, but I was told that what they had was only about half of what they usually have (being the Christmas season and all), so I look forward to stopping in again in the very near future.

The Caboose could have a bigger selection to be sure, but what they have is all quality. The staff has always been helpful. On the last stop there was some Imperial Stout sitting on the edge of the counter and not on display. Upon inquiring whether or not it was for sale or on hold, they said it was old and they were not going to sell old beer even though it would be fine. They said I could take it. That is an excellent way to treat both beers for sale, and customers!
