On tap at the Oak Creek Brewery & Grill in Sedona.

Pour was reddish amber, very clear, with a remarkably durable, creamy, tan head. The head has a bit of red too. Glass is coated even 30 minutes after pouring. Simply great looking beer!

Aroma: smells like an IPA, although a tiny bit more malty than average.
Taste follows: clearly an Imperial Red, this is strongly flavored with a huge hop component and moderate-high bitterness. Given that, good balance.

Medium-full body with a touch of harshness and heat from the high ABV. Lightly dry finish.

O: a very bold and hoppy red that is more like an IPA than an amber/red.

I may be biased because my bother is a brewer at Oak Creek but this is an exceptional offering.

Aroma jumps out of the bottle and the head grabs the side of the glass and lingers. Flavors are well rounded, balanced, and aggressive. One of the few reds that successfully melds hoppiness and malt tones.

Sipped from a snifter at Tops.

A perfectly clear, beautiful crimson-orange, topped with a fizzy tan head that fizzles away quickly, leaving behind a medium-sized ring and some tiny spotted lace.

Nutty nose. I get almond, toasted sourdough, corn, earthy English hops, and maybe some very light apple and coffee.

More hops appear in the flavor, delivering a nicely earthy snap. The smooth nuttiness of peanut skins blends with toast, hints of light roast coffee, some orange and apricot. Very soft bitterness. Good balance.

Densely packed bubbles tingle the tongue lightly. The body is compact, a smooth, crisp medium-light.

The King moniker is a bit of a misnomer — this beer rules over no realm. Rather, it’s a fairly standard, drinkable amber ale — the Crimson Bourgeois, maybe.

Sampled on tap @ 1702, Tucson; April 2010
The beer arrives from the tap with a deep, concentrated, amber color that shows a clear, red-amber hue when held up to the light. The head is about one-finger in thickness and is an amber tinged, tan color. The aroma smells quite hoppy with a mix of citrus and pine-like notes. There is a backdrop of crystal malt aromatics that contribute notes of biscuits, caramel and a touch of sweet-tea like flavors; this gets much more noticeable as the beer warms up. The hops contribute notes of thin grapefruit, pine, light menthol aromatics and a hint of brighter fruit character. The nose is not bad, perhaps a touch to heavy handed with the crystal malts, but it is interesting enough.

The beer tastes sweetish as it first hits my mouth, which is contributed by the crystal malt and the hop character. The finish is a bit thinner than I expected; it does have a medium leaning body to it up front, but finishes on the thin side. Toasted malt flavors combine with caramelized malt that leans towards a roast character and there is a lingering, sweet tea like crystal malt character. The hops contribute flavors of orange zest, some grapefruit and a menthol / herbal backdrop as well as a hop bitterness that isn't quite big enough to balance the malt.

This beer is a bit too focused on the crystal / caramel malt character. I would have liked to have seen more hops used to balance this out. This is certainly not bad, but is a bit unbalanced in an almost cacophonous manner.

Appearance: deep mahagony color with a two finger head. Some nice lacing develops.

Smell: malt sweetness and some floral hops are easily detectable by the nose.

Taste: big malt base here. Caramel, ripe plums, and a hearty bitterness makes up a big flavored ale. A hint of alcohol is noticable.

Mouthfeel: medium-heavy in body. Lightly crisp at the start, smooth and a touch of dryness at the finish. Aftertaste is brief.

Drinkability: this one went down smoothly but slowly. This is worth trying if you see it on tap.
