Petrus pours a primarily clear golden color, with some hints of bronze. There's a thin ring of pure white sitting on top. The aroma was an excellent bouquet of floral and fruit scents, with a slight suggestion of funky yeast as well. The taste revealed the benefits of aging with a pleasant earthiness, and a tasty cider sourness. Very tart and wine-like. Moderate body with a dry mouth feel. I would have loved to have a nice cheese plate with this... maybe next time. Order this when you can fully appreciate it's delicate beauty... this is one fine sour.

Broken from the Sour Power pack I split with someone a while back... So far, it was disappointing, but I had this recently and enjoyed it. Re-drinking it and reviewing it live. Poured out of a 11.2oz bottle into a tulip glass.

Pours a normal looking pale amber color seen in various generic Belgian ales, except this was a little bit less golden and more on the orange-amber side (no doubt due to the oak). Pours a modest head about 2 fingers high even when poured aggressively, which soon settles down leaving behind a ring and minimal lacing. Not much carbonation overall, and indeed, the appearance is rather vinous. Looks calm and serene, with glowing elements I enjoy in sours. I fail to see how this could be classified as an Oud Bruin, but I suppose it was - before the funky stuff came into play, that is.

Has a terrifically damp and musty profile right at the front of the nose, with strong notes of musty stone or brick (that which you would find in an old building - one perfect for making these beers!) as well as vinous and stone fruit notes. Notes of tart white grapes (reminds me of a Chenin Blanc), as well as dried raisins, apricots, green melon, and green apple peel are in this - juicy, fresh, plump lemons pretty much are explosive overall. The oak is present, providing a bit of vanilla and baking spices, maybe some nuttiness, but the funky fruit and yeasty characteristics are very prominent here. Very unique and excellent stuff.

There's an immediate tart flavor that immediately strikes the senses, in a super puckering and soured sensation that becomes more satisfying the longer that this is consumed. Notes of sour apricots, tart white grapes, soured peaches, under-ripe melon, and intense lemon peel are very present, juicy, and flavorful. There's a floral finish, with notes of orange blossom. At the end, there's a bit of the sweetened yet dank flavor of oak, that is slightly woody and filled with notes honey and vanilla. However, this overall proves to be pretty musty and tart through and through, and the fruit profile is terrific overall. To add to the juicy flavor there's a creamy feel and decently carbonated profile to this. The lactic strain, however, is intense, and sticks with you even hours after consumption. There's a bit of a burning sensation from the relatively high ABV at the finish, but otherwise, it's well hidden. A complex but easily enjoyable beer for sour fans.

Excellent stuff - perhaps the best offering from this brewery. Despite not seeming too bottle-conditioned, I feel this would develop very well in the bottle over time. It's interesting to see a Belgian pale turned upside down and becoming a refreshing and complex offering as a sour beer. The oak and yeast are the stars here, but that Belgian sweetness (which can get grating) is far different here, and resembling actual off-dry fruit rather than something more mundane. Recommended, but don't go out of your way to get the Sour Power pack just to get 2 bottles. At $4 a bottle elsewhere, however, this is a good bargain indeed.

Golden color with a one finger head with low retention. Tiny apparent bubbles feeding a constant thin lace.
Intense aroma of wine and vinegar with hints of wood and leather.
Initial difficult to describe the flavor as a whole, just loved it, let me see if breaking this down to better understand what just happened here. Flavor of fresh lemon, acid green apples, white grapes or even a non-sweet Chardonnay, some biscuit and Yakult, and finishing with spices. Dry aftertaste with a lingering acid sensation.
Light to medium body with sparkling wine carbonation. 7.3% abv is shy against its sourness.
I had an extraordinary sensation on my tongue on my first sip, although my brain noticed it was different than previous sour experiences, it gave me a positive message: good stuff, go for it! Very tart and original.

In the land of sours, there are kings and queens and jesters and serfs. This one would be the hardworking blacksmith's apprentice who's actually the bastard son of the king.

In other words, it's not going to get all of the attention. It's going to keep working hard making horseshoes for the commoners. In sour terms, it's (relatively) cheap, (relatively) ubiquitous, and damn delicious.

And when you don't care to drain an entire 750ml sour, you can grab one of these and pour it throughout an evening from a 12oz bottle for four or five bucks.

A: Pale, as the label says. When poured into a five ounce glass, carbonation is minimal, lacing is also minimal after a half inch head dissipates. It sits there like a bale of hay waiting for the nearest cow. Sheds an appropriate scent for that metaphor. When the glass is placed next to the bottle, it shares the same gradation of yellowish-orange as the darker sections of the label. Does not resemble any Flanders oud bruin you've had previously.

S: Bale of hay in late summer with a tart tinge of fermentation deep within the bale. Also a bit of leather from an old baseball lost in the bale since May. Let's dive in.

T: What you're looking for in a sour: barnyard, tiny bit of balsamic vinegar, even a bit of reduced butter. The five ounce glass will disappear sooner than you think. Overtones of apples and pears a week after having fallen into dry grass.

M: Similar to the appearance of the carbonation in the glass, it's minimal on the tongue. But it coats your palate with the aforementioned butter reduction and reveals layers of carbonated action beneath. Complex and invigorating.

I keep a four pack of these on hand for every occasion. Usually the occasion is that it's after six o'clock and I'm celebrating the existence of beer in general, and this wondrous beer specifically.

A: Pours a cloudy light orange-ish amber with a fair amount of light white head. Just a ring around the glass and a bit of surface film retains, which is enough to leave a good amount of lacing.

S: Light yeast, sour fruit, and a touch of sweetness.

T: Sour and sweet fruit from the start through the aftertaste. Nice complexity and great tartness on the finish.

M: Medium to light body, medium carbonation.

Overall, a very nice sour. Worth a try if the style appeals to you.

A) Dark Mahogany color with a thin dark cola colored Head

S) Tart and acidic with undertones of dark woods. hints of sour fruits are in the nose like peaches.

T) acidity and tartness are the main components as the beer starts. It finishes with a sour apple like flavor. before that however the tart fades away to a more toasted malt flavor that is warming and there are slight hop undertones as well.

MF) light and acidic, drying and bubbly

330 ml bottle purchased during my recent trip to Vegas. I poured this one into my beer goblet after warming for a few minutes from the fridge.

Appearance: A nice crystal clear golden straw with lots of effervescence. A short white head with loads of tiny bubbles.

Smell: Much bigger than the color suggests. Boozy, or at least aromas that are associated with boozy. Oak and light malts, no hops are noticeable.

Taste: A surprisingly dry tart taste. Lemony in it's puckering ability. A touch acidic, all the while being very smooth. Each sips begs you to drink the next sip. There is a cracker character to the malt component. The little hops are simply for very light bittering. The finish is pretty strong and lasts for a while.

Mouthfeel: The body is light but not watery. The intense flavors easily coat the palate. The carbonation is high and spritzy.

Overall: A curveball of a beer. Very interesting and unexpected, I will be on the lookout for this one again.

A: pours a clear yellow with a finger of white head that fades into a thin ring with no lacing.

S: Belgian candy sugar and sweet breads up front before a hefty kick of sour and tart fruits, Champagne, sour apples, and oak.

T: huge sourness and tartness here. Sour apples, tart cherries and raspberries, lemons, and limes. Oak and Belgian candy notes underneath. The finish is tart and clean.

M: light body with medium carbonation, this beer is dry and very drinkable.

O: despite not looking like much, this is one of the tastiest and easily accessible sours out there. Super tart and refreshing.

Poured into a wine taster. The color is clear light golden. There isn't much of a head; and what is there doesn't last long. Love the color; bummer about the head.

The aroma is full of apple with a hint of grapes. Very nice aroma here.

The taste is mostly clean tartness with a hint of sweet vinegar in the finish.

This is medium to full bodied. The carbonation is soft.

I like this one alright and I'd happily drink it again to satiate my wild ale thirst.

Picked up this classic for $3.99 USD at my local bottle shop. "Aged Pale. Ale aged in oak casks." Self-identifies as a "golden blond ale." 7.30% ABV confirmed. 11.2 fl oz brown glass bottle with appealing label art and branded pry-off cap served into a flared stem-snifer/tulip hybrid glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are high given its reputation as a staple sour.

Served cold - straight from the fridge. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a 1.5-2 finger wide head of white colour. Nice thickness. Slight creaminess. Fairly soft complexion. No lacing clings to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Head retention is pretty decent - about 4-5 minutes.

Body colour is a semitransparent translucent yellow. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show.

Rather pale for the style. Appealing. No flaws are overt.

Sm: Heavy lactobacillus yeast/bacteria. Great tartness. Redolent of peach, apricot, and maybe tart green apples. Clean malts and barley. Some graininess. Light oak. Really appealing; the tartness is a definite highlight. Any hopping is subtle and floral in character. Sourness is at the forefront here, as it should be. Acidity is obvious. Ripe, young, and appealing. A fairly strong aroma.

I don't detect any alcohol.

T: Nice tartness throughout. Crystal malt, clean malts, and barley comprise the unobtrusive foundation. Nice fruity notes of crabapple, light lemon esters, peach, and white cherry. Somewhat cidery. Sourness is prounounced but not overbearing; lactobacillus yeast is obvious. The oak is quite restrained but helps guide the beer. It's not quite gestalt, the balance is quite good - though admittedly, it's a pretty simple build for the style. Complementary floral hop character. Apple skin/fruit skin. Maybe even white cherry skin. Lightly tanic. Some subtlety is present here. Well executed for a simple basic sour. Well layered and put together. I quite like it.

Flavour duration is above average. Flavour intensity is somewhat high. Depth of flavour is average at best.

No alcohol comes through.

Mf: Acidic, smooth, wet, crisp, and refreshing. Slight overcarbonation, but it's forgivable. Good presence on the palate. Complements the flavour profile nicely. Spritzy and effervescent.

Dr: A very drinkable sour for a rather fair price as an import. A great introductory beer for newcomers to sours, but it can't hold its own with more complex, refined beers in the style. I'll definitely be returning to this one regularly, and it earns its reputation as a staple sour. Quality stuff for the price; I'd probably recommend it to friends. Hard to find much wrong with it, but there's definite room for improvement. I do want more complexity and more of an oak presence, for example. A solid brew from Bavik, if one that uses lacto as something of a crutch. But if you're going to use a crutch, it may as well be lacto. I'm having this stuff.

Pours Medium clear gold with a nice white foam head. Some retention that leaves splashes of lace as you sip.

Tart acidic notes up front, with some bready aromas, wood too.

Big tart punch in the mouth, with lots of acid. Malt comes up a bit, with some aged woody flavors and some sweet grain and bread. But sour is sour, and any variant on the palate is pushed aside by the tart element -- and this is fine by me. Mild bitter grain husk back there somewhere as well.

Acid bite and a good tingle on the tongue.

Great beer. Far from being a bruin, but essentially a pale sour. I liked this alot.

Pours golden in color with a 1finger soapy had that has decent retention

Nose has some acidic grape like notes that are plesent. Is slightly hard to pick out any malt or hops.

Taste is great. more grape like acidity comes forward in the taste playing nicely with a malty sweetness. Taste is similar to a sweet white wine but better.

Mouthfeel is crisp and refreshing. Light body with a slight amount of sour stickiness that leaves this very drinkable

11.2oz bottle. Pours a golden yellow, sparkling almost champagne like with a small white head. Aroma is of Belgian yeast, biscuit malt with ripe fruity notes. Taste is mildly tart and sour with some Belgian yeast, has a kind of sour fruit slightly vinegary white wine. Palate is a medium body with mild carbonation and sweet tart sourness on the tongue. Finish same as taste with some faint notes of malt on the end gives it slight balance. Overall a bit on the sour side yet a drinkable brew none the less.

A: Pours a murky gold with a soft white head.

S: White wine vinegar acetic notes, lemony, floral, mildly sweet pale malt, coconut.

Poured from a bottle into a tulip, the beer is an extremely bright, straw gold coloring with a thin, filmy white head that starts around half an inch, but settles into a ring on the surface. Aromas are tart and sweet, robust and forward, with notes of apple, toasted grains, and subtle woody highlights. Mouth watering nose. Flavors are bold and tart, with an underlying roasted character, almost char-like. Toasty grain/bread notes noticeable initially, but they are quickly swallowed up by the sour characteristics, with a tangy sweetness that keeps the drinkability high. The aftertaste is more of the woody and char characteristics, but with a solid ribbon of tart still present. Clean, smooth finish with a slight puckering. Very drinkable throughout. Solid brew.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle stamped 41354. Sampled on June 22, 2013.

It looks wonderful with decent pale yellow/golden color and a small head that lingers for a moment but eventually fades away.

The aroma is sour, hoppy, and biscuity. The sour character takes center stage.

The body is light to medium.

The taste is most definitely a sour ale. Alcohol is well integrated, Don't try to sugar-coat it or anything it will come up just the same. So as far as sour ales go this really meets or exceeds to style. It really is not my favorite style so it is difficult to review. Sour ale fans will like this one.

Purchased at Fleming Place in Topeka, KS. Poured into a snifter.

Appearance: Pours a half finger's worth of head which quickly fizzed away. Thin bubbles stayed at the edges and with a good swirl turned into a thin cap which left some nice lacing on the sides. Looks like a cider. Golden in color. Doesn't look like too much.

Aroma: Apple vinegar, acidic cider, white wine and a lactic tang. Earthy, humid basement. Faint oak. Rotting pineapple and dirty hay.

Taste: Wave of acidic and tangy vinegar. Sour grapes and tart rotting apples. Stomach acid and finishes with a bit of barrel and a hint of vanilla. The lactic tangyness actually keeps the sourness from being offensive. No hint of booze.

Mouthfeel: Fizzy. High carbonation. Drying. Slight warmth in the throat.

Overall: Fairly new to the style but I like this as an introduction. I don't know if I'm getting acid reflux or if it's just the beer in my throat. Excellent on the first day of summer. Not overly complex but being fairly new I'm still getting used to the sour. You know you always seem them on the shelf, pick one up already.

Petrus Aged Pale pours a golden, amber-ish and orange kind of color, a bit muddled in hue, although it has reasonably good clarity, save for a bit of chill haze at the start. The gray-tinted head doesn't stick around for a very long time, as it quickly descends into a skin that has trouble even spanning the top of the brew. No lacing, although it isn't exactly expected for this style of beer.

One sniff and you're hit with a good "one-two" combo of sour and funk; musky cellar and corky funk, complimented by a mirage of tart fruits, like apple skins, lemon zest, and a bit of white grape. Barrel character is highly integrated, too, with plenty of tannin and wet oak. The yeast provides a touch of clove-like spice and maybe even a bit of bubblegum - very characteristic of certain Belgian yeast strains. So far, I'm liking how things are going.

The brew carries a nice, even tartness throughout the entirety of each sip; the profile expands even more on the palate, opening up and bouncing around with a plethora fruits. Green apples, grapes, cherries, strawberry, and a touch of lemon zest in the end. Tart, but not quite puckering or sour, and very calm and mellow; no acidic burn, which is a good thing for my stomach lining. Vinegar as well as vinous notes are low, except for a heavy bit of oak that hangs around in the background, adding a nice level of complex dryness to the beer.

For a "sour" ale, this beer is balanced very well and has plenty of malt and even a touch of grassy hops to keep the tart-inducing yeast in check. I wouldn't call it "boozy" at 7.3% ABV, but the barrel aging does integrate a mild sherry and phenol-like alcoholic tone that beefs up an otherwise light-tasting Belgian sour. Medium bodied, even borderline creamy, although the high carbonation keeps it from being so. Finish is somewhat dry and a touch sticky.

Awesome beer here, and what's even better is that you can easily pick this stuff off of most shelves around town. Definitely a brew that's sour and funky enough to please long-time fans of the style, while remaining mild and tame enough to not scare newcomers away. Reasonably priced for the quality and amount as well; one of the better examples of blonde Belgian sours that are easy to obtain.

S: Tart and yeasty yet again. Smells like pears and apples.

T: Wow, that surprised me. It is the most sour and tart beer I have had as of yet. You could say it is similar to a kind of vinegar, like a cheap apple cider one. Not what I was expecting.

M: Slight bit of carbonation but you can't really pay attention to it because you are preoccupied with the tartness, which completely preoccupies your tastebuds and mind.

O: If this is what I can expect from a strong/good "sour" then they might not be my favorite. I prefer kind of a sweet tartness or a very carbonated one like a kombucha. I like stuff closer to Rodenbach Classic. Not for me and I love apple cider.

Transparent golden, almost cider colored. Slightly fizzy head.

Smell: 3.25

Sour and tart with light fruity hints.

Taste: 3.25

Strong sour taste that jumps out, due to the sour taste the other flavors are difficult to identify.

Mouthfeel: 3.25

Sour and almost juice like with hints of fruits. The fruit notes resemble a green apple. Light beer with light carbonation.

Overall: 3.25

First sour beer I've drank, not the type of beer I would normally drink, and not quite sure I'm a fan of sour beers. This is a light and very sour, slightly fruity beer.

11.2 oz bottle. Pours clear straw yellow with a medium frothy white head that quickly goes to a thin film that leaves some lacing.

The aroma is acidic sourness with some tart green apples and a little sweethearts.

The flavor is lots of acidic tart mouth-puckering sourness with some sweethearts. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, a nice acidic sour. It's very sour and a little sweet and candy-like Duchesse, but not too sweet.
