Picked up this classic for $3.99 USD at my local bottle shop. "Aged Pale. Ale aged in oak casks." Self-identifies as a "golden blond ale." 7.30% ABV confirmed. 11.2 fl oz brown glass bottle with appealing label art and branded pry-off cap served into a flared stem-snifer/tulip hybrid glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are high given its reputation as a staple sour.

Served cold - straight from the fridge. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a 1.5-2 finger wide head of white colour. Nice thickness. Slight creaminess. Fairly soft complexion. No lacing clings to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Head retention is pretty decent - about 4-5 minutes.

Body colour is a semitransparent translucent yellow. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show.

Rather pale for the style. Appealing. No flaws are overt.

Sm: Heavy lactobacillus yeast/bacteria. Great tartness. Redolent of peach, apricot, and maybe tart green apples. Clean malts and barley. Some graininess. Light oak. Really appealing; the tartness is a definite highlight. Any hopping is subtle and floral in character. Sourness is at the forefront here, as it should be. Acidity is obvious. Ripe, young, and appealing. A fairly strong aroma.

I don't detect any alcohol.

T: Nice tartness throughout. Crystal malt, clean malts, and barley comprise the unobtrusive foundation. Nice fruity notes of crabapple, light lemon esters, peach, and white cherry. Somewhat cidery. Sourness is prounounced but not overbearing; lactobacillus yeast is obvious. The oak is quite restrained but helps guide the beer. It's not quite gestalt, the balance is quite good - though admittedly, it's a pretty simple build for the style. Complementary floral hop character. Apple skin/fruit skin. Maybe even white cherry skin. Lightly tanic. Some subtlety is present here. Well executed for a simple basic sour. Well layered and put together. I quite like it.

Flavour duration is above average. Flavour intensity is somewhat high. Depth of flavour is average at best.

No alcohol comes through.

Mf: Acidic, smooth, wet, crisp, and refreshing. Slight overcarbonation, but it's forgivable. Good presence on the palate. Complements the flavour profile nicely. Spritzy and effervescent.

Dr: A very drinkable sour for a rather fair price as an import. A great introductory beer for newcomers to sours, but it can't hold its own with more complex, refined beers in the style. I'll definitely be returning to this one regularly, and it earns its reputation as a staple sour. Quality stuff for the price; I'd probably recommend it to friends. Hard to find much wrong with it, but there's definite room for improvement. I do want more complexity and more of an oak presence, for example. A solid brew from Bavik, if one that uses lacto as something of a crutch. But if you're going to use a crutch, it may as well be lacto. I'm having this stuff.

11.2 oz. bottle, poured into a glass chalice:

Pours hazed orange with a thin head that slowly becomes a swirl and bubbly patch. Vanishing trailing lace sticks to glass.

The smell is vinegary sour with vinuous notes. Orange and oak with some funk mix in.

The taste is vinuous and oaky - Funky sourness with lemon/orange. As it progresses, a candy sweetness, the tart/sour and a complex, champagne-like yeastiness work together to make a nice combination. Finishes long, oaky, very dry.

A spritzy tang mellows mid-way, leaving a nice texture.

Sweet and sour combo that that area is known for works well, with a nice oakiness as well. A sipper to be savored.

Gold color and nearly clear. Mild head that leaves nearly no spots on the glass. Steady stream of minute bubbles continuously work upward.

Highly soured, smells very similar to a hard cider. Light alcohol in the background.

Mild start to the beer, but the swallow is explosive with a lot of sour apple and lemon flavors. The aftertaste is surprisingly short. The flavor is solidly like a soured apple cider. Good body and carbonation.

On tap at Eulogy Belgian Tavern, Olde City during their sour week.

Poured into a Petrus glass, a light yellow/golden straw like color with about one finger of head with some nice lacing throughtout.

Aroma of sour apples, perhaps pears, wheat, some malt.

Taste is crisp and dry, very funky, tart.

Mouthfeel is very smooth medium bodied, some carbonation.

Very drinkable with a crisp sour finish.

The beer pours a light yellow color with a white head. The aroma is very tart with vanilla and oak notes. The flavor is tart lemons with some oak. The beer is extremely dry and makes you keep drinking it. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. An excellent, budget sour.

06/16/05- Purchased at Plumpjack Wines in San Francisco, CA

Presentation- 11.2oz bottle with no dating. Poured into my Stone Levitation glass.

Appearance- Champagne colored pour, maybe a bit on the darker golden side. Tons of light bubbles rising to the surface. 1/2 inch head in which part of it stays around during the entire glass. Excellent chunky lacing abounds.

Smell- Definite dulled fruity scent. Almost like a sweet style wine. Picked up sour notes as well. Definite light alcohol and oak scents too.

Taste- Sweet and sour at the same time. But, the sourness rules here. Very tart like the kind of candy you would but at the drug store when you were a kid. Fun Dip? Nice oaky background. Kind of funky aftertaste. Guess that is the barnyard quality coming through.

Mouthfeel- Not as carbonated as I thought after seeing the bubbles. But still above average carbonation level.

Drinkability- Reminds me of a red flanders more than anything. Kind of like a Duchesse. Just as good also if not better. This is no session beer. A sipper to be sure.

330 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottle code 40266. Pours lightly hazy golden amber color with a nice 1-2 finger fluffy white head with nice retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice foamy lacing clings to the glass; good amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of huge sour cherry, apple, lemon zest, hay, grass, earth, pepper, clove, light vinegar, leather, funk, and yeast spiciness. Damn nice aromas with good complexity and balance. Taste of tart green apple, lemon zest, cherry, earth, hay, grass, funk, pepper, oak, light vinegar, and yeast spiciness. Good amount of tartness present on the finish; with lingering notes of tart light fruits, hay, grass, earth, pepper, funk, vinegar, oak, and yeast spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Excellent balance and complexity of flavors; nice tartness/sweetness balance; zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a crisp and lightly acidic mouthfeel that is very nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with almost zero warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent sour ale! Great balance and complexity of flavors; very smooth and crisp to drink. Highly enjoyable offering I will definitely have again.

This has a nice tart nose to it as I pour, reminds me a bit of lemons and / or grapefruit even, though more of the acidic character of these fruits than the citrus notes. The beer is a brilliantly clear copper color and is topped by a pale, frothy, though somewhat thin off-white colored head. The aroma is dominated by the acidity, though upon this closer inspection the acidity is a mix between acetic and lactic acid components. There seems to be a bit of tannic woody type aromatic notes here, as well as some subtle fruity notes that remind me of green apples and tart plums. The aroma is really quite nice; I really enjoy the nose on tart beers.

The beer is quite dry and of course is nicely tart as well. The tartness reminds me of sour apples with perhaps a hint of lime or maybe even lemon added, and a splash of apple cider vinegar as well. The sourness is not nearly as strong as in a traditional Lambic, but it is nicely assertive. Going back to the sour apple note, this has a fruitiness to it that reminds me of them as well as a note that makes me think of raisins that have had all sugar removed (I don't even really know what that means, but I swear I taste it here). The actual funk level here is fairly restrained; there is perhaps a hint of funky mushroom in the finish.

This is quite a nice beer to drink, but in the end it is not nearly as complex as I would like it to be. Without the malt character of a sour brown or red, it really needs some more funkiness to it to strike a balance with the dominant acidity.

A: Pours a crystal clear medium golden yellow in color with heavy amounts of active visible carbonation streaming from the bottom of the glass and some faint orange highlights. The beer has a three finger tall dense foamy white head that slowly reduces to a large finger thick cap in the center of the glass surrounded by a very thick film and a very thick ring. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of oak and light fruits (white grape, apple, and pear) with moderate to strong amounts of tartness.

T: Upfront there is a light to moderate amount of oak and pale malts which quickly becomes quite tart. There are moderate notes of light fruits (white grape, apple, and pear) along with some notes of vinegar.

M: Light to medium bodied with moderate to heavy amounts of carbonation. Moderate amounts of acidic prickliness. Dry finish.

O: Very enjoyable but probably too sour to enjoy more than one of these in a session. Nice flavors and acidic prickliness.

On tap at Monk's Cafe, i've seen this in bottles before but not on tap so figured why not give it a try.

Served in a sort of stubby champagne glass, it appears a clear golden orange color with less than a finger of creamy head. Lace clings all about the glass. The aroma of this brew has all the indications of this being a funky brew. Slight fruity tones with an indication of sourness. The flavor of this brew has a tartness upfront with fruity hints and vinegar character. Quite a bit of puckering power with it's sourness level. Light bodied with a modest level of carbonation that is prickly on the tongue. Lingering flavor of funk and an oaky woodsiness left in the mouth that exaggerates the dryness of this beer along with an ever increasing amount of alcohol. As it warms there is a mild amount of orange rind flavor.

11.2 oz. bottle, into a Petrus glass,

A: Pours a pale goldenrod, mild white head, fair retention, no lace.

S: Great acetic acid nose, with a hint of lactic and sugary malt.

T: Definitely has an almost sweet mix of acetic acid and malt clearly putting it in the Flanders style. Oak, some green apple, very tasty.

M: Moderately high acid, it does attack the palate, but is very smooth, very easy drinking, no hint of the 7.3%.

D: This is an intriguing beer, pretty much a pale Oud Bruin, I expected more lactic acid but instead got CH3COOH which is fine, I like them both in their own ways, what they can bring to a beer. Really good like the regular Oud Bruin.

I kind of blew it this past winter - The Fridge was selling Petrus gift packs that included five different beers and I dragged my feet until it was too late. Since then, I have managed to find four different ones, of which this will be my fourth.

From the bottle: "The Key to Heaven"; "Petrus Aged Pale is a golden blonde ale brewed using the purest spring water, selected malt varieties and the finest hops. The unique aroma and taste is created by maturing in oak barrels for over 20 months. Serve cool, between 8 to 12 C (45 and 54 F)."

Having learned my lesson with their Blonde, I used a VERY gentle pour so as not to disturb any lees that may have settled to the bottom. As a result, I got no head, but I ended up with a very clear, deep-golden beer, much like filtered apple juice. The nose had a tartness like sour cherries and my mouth puckered and my tongue began to water. I am not a fan of sour beers, but I can appreciate them and this seemed like it was going to be good. My first sip gave off a vinegar tartness initially, then kicked in with green apples, wood and finally sour cherries. Wow! Mouthfeel was medium-to-full with a good bit of effervescence present. I can promise you that I would not enjoy a steady diet of this, but as an occasional foray into something other than AIPAs, this was nice. Finish was gaspingly dry, vinous, really. My my my.

Pours 1/2 finger of white head. Decent retention leaving some splattered lace. Color is a pale golden yellow.

Aroma: Sour cherries, a lot of grapes, oak, spice, sourness, grape candy. I like it.

Taste: A lot of sour grapes and cherries. Oak, spices, a decent sourness to it, some lemon and acidity, and green apples.

Mouthfeel: Sour and clean. Medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. Ends clean as well.

Overall, I was impressed with this one, especially at the cost. Really easy to drink and quite tasty. Definitely worth a try.

On draft at Churchkey in D.C.

A: This beer appears a very clear, light golden color. The head is very minimal, yet the retention is very good.

S:The beer smells really funky and tannic, always a good sign.

T: The taste is reminiscent of sour white wine, with a really puckering finish. I also get some nice notes of wood with prominent acetic properties.

M: The feel is decent, with a growing vinegar burn in the back.

D: It's pretty tasty, but not the smoothest ride.

11.2oz bottle picked up in NY a few weeks ago. The last time I've had this was about two years ago and then that was a 5 year old bottle at the time.

A glowing powerful golden beer with some yellowish streaks on the outlay of the glass, this looks very close to heaven in a bottle, the liquid is inviting. A rush of Ivory colored foam sits on top about an inch in height with some sticking ability, sheets down the glass. Belgian indeed.

This fresh bottle really showcases what this beer is about, which is the funky tartness that your about to inbide in. A heaping of acididy mixed in with some grapefruit, lemon and orange slices. The nose is really powerful on this. Some barnyard aroma with a dousing of oak, that may or may not have come from a wine barrel. Of course there is sweet scents as well with slight vanilla and even less sugar vibes.

I gotta say, this stuff is excellent, I really can't find a fault with it. The aged bottles I've had, while good, did not open my eyes like this young bottle. The fruit is more pronounced while in the past i've gotten alot of oak bombs from this beer. The yeast in this beer at this young stage is alive and dancing up a jig with tartness/ slight funk and overall deliciousness. Oak/vanilla tannins. This is what Belgian beer is all about.

There is just enough tartness to make me pucker (in a good way) for a bit after I sip, that's great, that's what I look for. But the tartness is not at a level to make your tounge cringe, it's pretty much perfect. The flavors in this just dance on my tounge so expertly that I want to stop writing and just enjoy this ride. A lighter than medium feel with a lively and spritzy carbonation.

This beer is alive, and it's damn tasty, and a pleasure to drink. Im a sour head, so this is right up my alley, but I can see why some people would throw up even attempting to drink a beer this good. It's not for everybody, but it's for me. This is one sour that I would drink three bottles of in a night and have thoughts to do it again the next night. Top notch!

Edit (2009-2010)- Damn, Bavik, I know Philly is mad lucrative for breweries, but you guys must of sent at least 150 kegs of this stuff over here. It's on at at least 25 bars that I know of right now. Im bombared by this goodness and im becoming broke because of it, please stop!

Petrus aged pale

Pours a bright golden color with a small white head. Aroma of sour musty funk and horse blanket. In the taste, a sharp sour bite like a more characterful lemon rind. Wild yeasts doing their job well. Bitter, sour, and funky. Small touch of oak but mainly a dry sour. Mouthfeel is light, well carbonated and dry. Overall, this is an intense brew that I quite enjoyed.

Pours a clear golden color with thin white head that dissolves quickly, leaving little if no lacing. Funky aroma of sour/ tart light fruit, sugar, oak and champagne. Tart earthy oak taste with hints of light crisp fruit. Very carbonated with nice dry finish.
