Petrus Aged Pale is a 100% beer from our foeders. Michael Jackson, the beer hunter, chose the name in the late 1990s – and he was the first to sell this beer in his beer clubs. Today, it is still the reference for sour beers in the US. Petrus Aged Pale has won multiple gold medals in beer competitions worldwide. Moreover, ever since the start of the brewery, the beer has been used as a blending-beer with other beers to give them fresh, slightly sour flavors and aromas.

The Petrus Aged Pale pours a clear, brass-gold body beneath a creamy head of white froth that holds well, slowly dropping to a wide collar and thin surface covering while leaving short splashes of lace about the glass.

The nose offers sour fruit (grapefruit, cherries, grapes), sugar (a touch of candy sugar, some mild bubblegum - possibly due to a note of vanilla from the wood), oak, and basement mustiness. It's intriguing (especially the sugary side) and inviting.

In the mouth it's delicately crisp and light bodied with an acidity that's almost puckering.

The flavor offers everything the nose promises except that it's not quite as fruity. Initially the tartness over-rides it, but then the candyish side fights back. Dry oak comes into play at the swallow, and it finishes remarkably clean and dry considering the brief intensity that it just offered. Some woodiness (with a drop of vanilla) lingers in the aftertaste along with a touch of mustiness; leaving the palate primed and waiting for another quick sip of exhilarating charm!

The alcohol is never noticeable; and for those that enjoy/accept/can get past the brazen acidity this is a superbly refreshing and remarkably palate-cleansing and invigorating beer! Magnificent!!!!

A: Very light, blonde with decent head and carbonation
S: Lemons and oak. Almost like a Chardonnay.
T: Big lemon-sour taste up front, with a champaign-like finish. Oakiness is actually fairly subtle, but adds a crispness (also like a chardonnay)
M: I a little alcohol heat and lots of dryness in the finish
D: Delicious and refeshing on a hot summer day. This is really a wonderfully unique Belgian!

Poured into Jolly Pumpkin snifter. Thin head, copperish amber color. Smells like whaaaa. Sour funk, amazingly complex. Taste - oh the taste! Lots and lots of Warhead-esque lemonadey citrusy mouthpuckering action. Carbonation is light to moderate and fitting. Not a strong malt or hops profile - this beer is very complex without it. Is this the most sour beer that I've had? Maybe.

A very clear and bright gold. The foam wasn't excessive but has a lot of retaining power. Lacing? For sure.

Geez, this smells good if you are a sour beer fan and don't mind some horse blanket permeating your nose buds.

I am deliberately trying to pull some of that funk out of my first few sips and I can but make no mistake, this one's all about the sour and quite a bit about the bitter.

On the sour scale shown on the label, 1 to 5, this comes in at a 5. I believe it and I relish in it.

I would call it close to medium bodied with a solid but not outrageous level of carbonation.

Dang this is good. On or at least at the level of your beers from Cantillion, De Cam, Tilquin, Gerard. .

More please!

This is probably one of the most unique beers I've had. It's a pale yellow, not unlike Hoegaarden. The taste comes on strong and kicks you in the tongue with sourness, but it's not unpleasant. As you drink more the sourness subsides and flavors of orange and tang are left. Is a beer that appeals to different areas of the tongue. It also displays flavors of oak due to the aging. So we have flavors of oak, orange, sour, green wood, and hops to bring it all together. And it's tame enough to drink non-stop. Fantastic

11.2oz brown glass pry-top bottle. Back label stamped "39681."

Appearance: Poured into my Maudite tulip. A hazy light amber hay color. Slight, quickly receding white head.

Nose: Apricots, peaches, kumquats, lime, sour dough, slight minerality. Also, smells like a million bucks!

Palate: Sour! Holy sour, batman! Wow, ok...medium-bodied, light to no carbonation really. Lots of sour peach, sour apricot, kumquats again, with some oxidized nuttiness in the background. There's this toasted hazelnut/caramelized sugar underpinning beneath all this sour citrus fruit. There's enough sweetness to keep the acid from getting out of hand, and the oaking keeps the sourness in check by drying it out a litte.

Notes: Talk about a complex beer! Wow, totally blow away by this one. I love the interplay between the nutty/oxidized sub-notes and the full-on sour apricot body. Highly recommend for fans of sour beers.

Picked up a 12oz bottle on a whim

A: pours an effervescent golden color with half inch white head. Appearance reminds me of other sours including temptation and sanctification.

S: a crisp, musty funk characteristic of sour ales. Citrusy, with a hint of oak.

T: wow, was I impressed with the first sip! This is a real sleeper sitting on the shelf. Effervescent, sour and citrusy at first, after the swallow you can taste the hints of oak and pale ale birth. While some sours begin to taste better only as they warm, this beer is great right of the fridge and stays great throughout the warming process. As you near the bottom of the glass, the kamikaze and barrel aging become more apparent, and then basically smack you in the face on the final gulp.

M: tart, slightly puckering, effervescent and crisp

D: one of the most drinkable beers I've had. Refreshing and delicious. I will always have at least 3 bottles in my house at all times.

Champagne mouthfeel everyone keeps mentioning is VERY evident. Lacked a real malt character though. Quite sour, but in a pleasant way. Lots of sour fruit: apples, cherries, bananas. Some clove also evident. Great Brett/pedio nose. Can't beat the price either. If you're just starting out with sour beers, this is a great one to check out.

This one is not for a newbie! Also, I fully agree that this is a sour ale and should be labeled as such. However, it is a Belgian and it is strong. Also, I found this beer to be very tasty. The appearance was clear, gold with high carbonation and a nice but short lived head. The aroma and flavor are very acidic and sour from the lactobacillus (I think) with low malt sweetness and some citrus flavors. The hops are subdued. The mouthfeel is light and crisp and finishes very dry. After some thinking, my wife and I think this would go nicely with a lemon cheesecake or something like that. The sourness and acidity would cut through the fat of the dessert but not overpower the sugary goodness. I want 57 more. If you like sour ales, run, I tell ya, run to get some of this.

Poured from an 11.2 oz bottle into an oversized wine glass. Pours a bright and pretty clear copper color- almost no head, and what little there is dissipates quickly. (I think I should have used a tulip)

Smells wonderful. Of course it's a strong smell because of the wild yeast- a little vinegary, a hint of green apple. Not overpowering.

The taste is very strong. It's pretty tart right up front and the tartness stays with you throughout the sip and a while after. I get the green apple up front, followed by earthy yeast. Finishes mildly tart.

Mouthfeel is good- medium light body and moderately carbonated. Because of the complexity of the smell and flavor, and the tartness, this is a beer to drink slowly for sure. I might buy one to see how it ages...

Pours butterscotch with a lasting tight white head. Great sticky lacing.

The aroma is so compelling! Funky and bright, with a honeyed-oak sweetness. I'm giddy just smelling this stuff.

Taste fulfills the promise of the aroma, opening with cheek-puckering acid, green apple skin that pauses at chardonnay before coasting out semi-dry with great clarity and a raw honey background. It's a great experience of the brighter complexities of a gueze, not the deep, cheesy note, but apples, grapes, tart cherries. Just a touch of vanilla rounds this out.

Mouthfeel is more lively than a geuze, some carb to keep the brew refreshing without sinking into your tongue.

This is one my favorite underrated beers out there. It satisfies my craving for a complex, funky beer without being prohibitively expensive.

Pours a golden color with a nice large head that laces like no other beer I have seen before.
Smells WiLd and zAnY! Strong strong green apple esters. Potent and overwhelming almost in smell.
Tastes strongly of green apple, with a little bit of tanginess. This is one of the more extreme tasting beers I have ever had. The oak cask aging imparts so much that I would not have expected and am very happy to have tasted.

Edit: Lots of sour yeast.

Ok. I'll admit this beer is way over my head as far as my experience with a with a wide range of beers. I had never had anything quite like this. the yeast yields a near cider fruit flavor. the mouthfeel is still full and the finish is fruity and light with a citric aftertaste. The whole flavor is absolutely out of this world and the drinkability is second to none.

This I'd an excellent beer. It drinks like a sour cider.

appearance is very well filtered, a golden clean color.

smell Is pear, apple, tart and inviting.

taste is great, sweet, then tart, with a smooth lingering tart and oaky flavor.

mouthfeel is smooth and full, drinkabilitybis very high. A truly great beer.

I reviewed this beer tonight while listening to Debussy's piano preludes. The music is actually quite fitting for this beer, considering that most people need some slow introduction into the music of Debussy as well as the music of this Oud Bruin. If "bruin" means brown, which is what I thought it meant, than I might call this beer mislabeled. This is more of an "aged sour blonde ale", or something like that. I poured the 11.2oz (unfortunately) bottle into a tulip glass for some midnight drinking. There is no freshness date on the bottle.

A: The beer pours a beautiful clear amber/gold color with orange highlights. The clarity vanished after a second pour, however, since there is some residual stuff at the bottom of the bottle. There was a lot of carbonation visible. The medium-sized white head dissipated to a thin lace at the edge of the glass. Overall, this beer is quite attractive.

S: The predominant smell is a sour, green apple tartness aroma. The sourness could be coming from the Bret... The background sweet malt smell is sugary. There is virtually no hop aroma. The smell in general is not strong, but tender.

T: The taste is tart, but surprisingly mild. Maybe I am getting used to it by now?? It is not mouth-puckering at all, I swear! The tartness comes at the swallow, touching the edge of my tongue everywhere. As I let the beer sit in my mouth, I can't help but admire the oakiness of it all, accompanied by tart green apple flavor. SO mouth watering! The aftertaste is absolutely amazing. It is a combination of oak, cherries, (really a mix of berry flavors) and a spicy quality that reminds me of cloves.

M: Yes, this beer is light-bodied, zesty and fully carbonated. A close-to-perfect body for this beer. I am not actually sure why I am not giving a 5 for this, but I am not.

D: Oh man, this is entirely too drinkable! The 7.3% alcohol doesn't do a thing to me. I can honestly say that this is one of the top 20 summer beers out there for me. It was gone way too quick...damn those 11.2 oz bottles!

I had this down at the Falling Rock Taphouse in Downtown Denver last weekend and I have been wanting more ever since. Served in a wine glass, this beer poured a light golden color with a small fizzy white head. Aromas of wheat, sweet malts, light citrus and subtrle hops. Taste wise this might be one of the best sours I have had. NOt overly sour but definitely noticable, and not as sweet and fruity as most. Instead I found it very well balanced between the sour and the bitterness of the hops.

11.2oz bottle into a tulip.

A: Clear golden body. Head builds fast, then recess . Lots of lace on the glass.

S: Sour. Cherries and white wine. A woody character mixed with the malts. Aromatic scent, very distinct.

T: Pucker up, this is a sour beer. Takes a few minutes to adjust to the acidic sour of this beer. Once adjusted, there are hints of fruits, specifically cherries, and a slightly vinous character. Has some earthiness to it as well, suspect that comes from the oak barrels it rests in during the aging process. No bitterness at all.

M: Light body, mildly carbonated, tries to be dry but then the sweetness of the malt kicks in then it goes dry again. Finishes neatly.

N: You couldn't session this beer, but why would you? Its something you bring out to change things up. It is so tart to start, but then it mellows. Would go well with a tangy cheese and some classical music. This is a beer to be sipped and savored.

Pale gold, light haze. Decent thick white foam, but not much retention. I guess this one doesn't look dark as the style would suggest. The smell is awesome, a woody, vinegary-sour explosion with tangy fruit notes. Some floral sweetness rounds things out, but mostly this smells like it's going to be a nice, tart treat.

The taste attempts to delicately balance a hint of candy sweetness against the tart fruit, but in the end this is a full on sour experience. It's a bit lemony up front but finishes with a touch of dry grains to round things out nicely. The acetic acid really shines through after a few sips, it's not quite puckering, but close. The alcohol is not discernable, and seems much lower than it actually is. Light to medium body, with a fine, prickly carbonation.

I can't believe I've not tried this beer before, I either didn't notice it, or it just wasn't available for a long period. This is a fine Flanders style ale, with a clean, focused sourness, and drinkablility through the roof. I would have to say it looks to be quite underrated.

Poured into a tulip glass...

Truly golden in color, highlighted by even brighter gold hues. Pours a 1-cm head that moves to wispy bubbles very quickly. A slight delicate lace emerges. Much lighter than I expected for an old brown ale.

This is a very complex beer. There is a slight funk on top of caramel. And the more you smell, the funkier it is. I can't really pinpoint the rest of the aromas, but there are sweet and sour characteristics that trade off, as well as a medley of great aromas. On the palate, I find out that the nose of Petrus Aged Pale deceives its true nature. There is a big acetic sourness in front of a a nice funky Belgian yeast. There are some light fruity esters, and vinous Chardonnay notes.

Really smooth, with a perfectly carbonated light to medium textured body, yielding a great texture. I will definitely be heading back for more bottles of this. This is a great sour, and to be able to buy it at $4/bottle is a great treat.

Nice golden color. Very bright and clear. Fluffy white head of 2 fingers.
Smells of sour lemons, light oak, little vinegar?-- very nice.
Taste has awesome tartness and sour citrus notes. This tastes fantastic.

The body is light, almost like a white wine. Low carbonation. Very nice.

Overall-- this IS the poor man's Beatification. Is it as good? No. Is it similar enough to satisfy my craving without killing myself trading for Beatification? Yeah, absolutely. Dry and sour, mostly citrus notes. The only thing missing is the funk and oak-- but, as stated, this is merely an acceptable substitute.

I'm a bit surprised this beer only gets a B+.
it is delicious... And cheap. That's win/win!

A 750ml bottle with no visible dating. Poured into a brandy snifter.

Popped this lively corked and caged bottle with a bit of an expectation, that was met. On those its all funky, making me think it wouldn't be as sour as it is. The nose did not prepapre for the lock jaw sour from the beginning of the sip to well past the finish. I don't pick up any vanilla or even that much sweetness. This almost perfect the way it is. Its a very light gold in appearance with very minimal head, the clarity on this beer is amazing. The mouthfeel is full of vibrant acidity and carbonantion, it has a very dry finish and strong pucker. Overall this is a very well done beer and a very affordable price( $9 for 750ml). I can see this becoming a regular beer in my lineup.

Poured into a tall oversized wine glass this beer looks amazing. A pillowy frothy white head holds solid to the glass. Effervescent bubbles rise emitting sour, tart, and oak notes. This reminds of Leelanau Golden Ale in the aroma. Slightly fruity in the nose as well.
Now for the sip. I have never tasted a beer quite like this. Tart, sour, with a huge sharply tart finish. The mouthfeel is akin to something in the 7.5% range. Very smooth and delicate. Pineapple twang is the best way to describe the finish.
This is a wonderful thing.

Petrus Golden Ale claims to be the key to heaven. Jesus did give the keys of heaven to Peter, so perhaps this ale represents salvationI am in liquid form.

If a Lambic had relations with a Pale Ale from across the Channel, this would be the offspring. I have a taste for sour Belgians, and I like this one, but I am more partial to the Gueuze style. Not nearly the head I had expected from a Belgian Pale Ale. Aged 3 years and poured into a Brugse Zot modified wide flute glass. Fine carbonation bubbles with a thin ring of head retained around the glass edge. Smells old, musty, but not strong. Sour smell is faint. Mouth feel is tart like a granny smith apple...very little sweetness...just hops and sour. Acidity is pronounced. Alcohol is well hidden. Enjoyable and thirst quenching although not as impressive as I would have hoped.

Poured in a LaTrappe chalice...head is decent but spreads out to a skim in the wide bowl. Dots are the primary laces. Hazy orange, greenish toward the surface. Aroma -- that's the ticket, sour and compost musty. Plenty of carbonation, great sense of white wine that's backed up by a butt load of ginger and red hot cinnamon. Almost a Gueuze-like sourness, an aftertaste that gives and gives and creates a memory. One tick up on the sweetness scale and this beer would be among my all time favorites -- as it is, a great and challenging beer. The biggest Flanders Red I've encountered so far.
