Petrus Aged Pale is a 100% beer from our foeders. Michael Jackson, the beer hunter, chose the name in the late 1990s – and he was the first to sell this beer in his beer clubs. Today, it is still the reference for sour beers in the US. Petrus Aged Pale has won multiple gold medals in beer competitions worldwide. Moreover, ever since the start of the brewery, the beer has been used as a blending-beer with other beers to give them fresh, slightly sour flavors and aromas.

Poured from 330mL bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: rich copper hue with two fingers of frothy white head and plenty of apparent effervescence. The label says pale, the style says oud bruin, and I think this is somewhere in between. Good stuff.

Smell: sweet and tart malty aroma. There's a bit of a berry-like aroma to it as well; just a hint, but it is quite interesting.

Taste: sweet malt and a big tart flavor. I like the sourness but it lacks complexity thereafter. There's a little woody character which is nice, but I feel like this is lacking something.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a good level of carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: I do like this beer, but I think it could be better. For me, the flavor doesn't quite live up to my expectation.

A - Pale golden ale. Fairly clear. Nice thin white head. Some cling.

S - Nice skank. Funky, not much malt there.

T - Rich tart goodness. Malt complements but lets the tart sour aspects ride.

M - Light to medium body, good carb, great balance.

D - Extremely drinkable!

This has a nice tart nose to it as I pour, reminds me a bit of lemons and / or grapefruit even, though more of the acidic character of these fruits than the citrus notes. The beer is a brilliantly clear copper color and is topped by a pale, frothy, though somewhat thin off-white colored head. The aroma is dominated by the acidity, though upon this closer inspection the acidity is a mix between acetic and lactic acid components. There seems to be a bit of tannic woody type aromatic notes here, as well as some subtle fruity notes that remind me of green apples and tart plums. The aroma is really quite nice; I really enjoy the nose on tart beers.

The beer is quite dry and of course is nicely tart as well. The tartness reminds me of sour apples with perhaps a hint of lime or maybe even lemon added, and a splash of apple cider vinegar as well. The sourness is not nearly as strong as in a traditional Lambic, but it is nicely assertive. Going back to the sour apple note, this has a fruitiness to it that reminds me of them as well as a note that makes me think of raisins that have had all sugar removed (I don't even really know what that means, but I swear I taste it here). The actual funk level here is fairly restrained; there is perhaps a hint of funky mushroom in the finish.

This is quite a nice beer to drink, but in the end it is not nearly as complex as I would like it to be. Without the malt character of a sour brown or red, it really needs some more funkiness to it to strike a balance with the dominant acidity.

Aroma:This one smells like a sour beer, with hints of wine.

Appearance:Pale with lots of bubbles. Lots of thick white head with OK retention.

Taste:There is a sharp tart apple sourness on the foretaste. The tartness fades quickly into a clean slightly sweet taste on the back end.

Mouthfeel:The acidic wild yeast astringency builds as the tartness fades. Good carbonation.

Drinkability:This is a quite refreshing sour beer. It's not the most sour beer in the world, but it's got some great flavors.

Very pale and clear.
Muted aromas, but the taste as wonderfully balanced, sour and restrained. Lemons to the fore, and oak.
Mouthfeel somewhat light, but really nice drinking al in all.

First off, this is no oud bruin, look at it, its yellow for God's sake! The beer is a beautiful pale yellow and looks like a gueuze. It smells quite enticingly sour, a little brett funkiness and a little cereal? The flavor is nice and sour but not abrasive. tart and lemony this is a good sour and I can't believe I've passed it up so many times in the past. the price wasn't too bad for a sour at $5 for a 330ml.

Purchased at the BSF bar, GBBF 06. BB 19/04/08, served lightly chilled in a large Burgundy bulb wine glass.

A: dark golden hue with great clarity, coming with a slowly-growing white foamy head that settles to a thin cap; very gentle carbonation.
S: a very intense, sour note of oak barrels and white wine vinegar prevails upfront, underlining a mild flow of dryish lemon peels, savoury-tart star fruits and prunes, semi-funky farmhouse yeasts and a pretty soft and subtly sweet malty bed... sort of reminiscent of Flemish Red Ale and even Lambiek but rid of the wild yeasty edge... if not knowing this is an oak-aged Begian beer the vinegary nose might be slightly intrusive to the nostrils and taking one by big surprise!!
T: bitter-zesty and sharply sour lemon juice and dry cider dominates the palate, but dissipates rather too fast and gives way to a neutral palate of residual doughy malts, bits of salt, dryish-sweet cinnamon+woodchips, and zesty-tang undertone like oxidised lemon rind... feeling pretty rusty b/w the teeth as well, plus short finish.
M&D: the whole structure falls a bit thin for the overall short palate, but the mouthfeel retains a refreshing state, albeit slightly sharp at first--definitely having room for improvement as this old beer is still pretty young in the bottle~~ The well hidden alc. plus a dryish finish ensure pretty good "quaffability", though. All in all, an interesting beer in need of time to bring more depth and complexity--is it possible for a filtered bottled beer like this?

pours a slightly hazy gold with a finger or so of quickly disappearing white head. no lacing.

very dry and tart, seems like a belgian gold was once there but has now been overthrown by a heavy sour oaky taste. a slight hint of alchohol heat which i am enjoying.

mouthfeel: expect dry cheeks constantly being washed by a salivating throat. exactly what i was looking for. although it is somewhat sour it is still refereshing, crisp and easy to drink.

Good beer. Not one to seek out actively, but never one to turn down. Everything seems good but one notch too low.

Pours cloudy orange brown with a foamy 1 finger off white head that faded quickly, leaving good lacing sliding down the glass.

Smells of yeast, sweet malt, sour apple, coriander, light orange peel, spices like pepper, red wine like merlot, and the classic skunky metallic finish from the yeast. Nose was both sweet and sour at the same time with whiffs of citrus throughout.

Tastes of sweet grains, caramel, red wine, hay, orange peel, heavy yeast, sweet liquor, sugar and a sour finish that resembles a rotten pear which leaves a pucker in a good way. Very complex and fruity with faint spices which kick in just before the sourness takes over. This brew resembles a wine or cider more than it does a beer, and this is a style that I am not familiar with at all.

Light and creamy, it has very little to no carbonation and a medium body that goes down silky smooth.

This beer was very tasty and complex, but way too tart/sour to drink all night. Interesting, but low drinkability and certainly not a pale ale. Great beer for a cider fan, but this is not a typical beer yet still worth trying because of the nice fruit taste combination.

Pale gold colour with a rather smallish head -compared to most Belgian's I've seen- that dissipates rather quickly.

Sour, vinegar scent. No oak at all. Faint malt, hardly any hops, as is expected. Lacks and fruity hints to it though.

Decent mouthfeel, but the sour, uncharacteristic flavour hamper the drinkability of this a bit.

An 8 oz. pour in a highball glass at the Whip In, Austin.

Golden with a slight haze, little head, but OK lace. Aroma is sour cherries with a hint of oakiness, as is the predominant flavor. Nice acidity and sourness up front with a noticeable bitter finish. Light body and lively mouth feel with plenty of carbonation.

10 oz pour at Malt and Vine, Redmond, WA on 5/9/13. No haziness with a bit of alcohol at the finish. Band-Aid and bubblegum flavor characteristics.

11.2oz to tulip glass, pours a pale golden shade, foamy white head dies quickly to lacing ring

smells of sweet tart sourness, not much else

taste is of ethyl alcohol off the bat, green tart apple sourness thrashes the tastebuds, good carbonation to pair with the sourness, oak flavor is dry and nice - alc is hidden very well

mouthfeel is dry and puckering, sweet dry and bubbly, finish leaves your mouth like you've been sucking on pennies - wouldn't drink often but still nice

I sort of didn't realize that this was a sour beer when I bought it. I had my suspicions, but I wasn't sure. Those suspicions were confirmed upon the first whiff. Heavy hints of oak and slight vinegar. I'm not a huge sour beer drinker, but this was actually pretty good. It had that nice malt backbone that tends to distinguish Oud Bruins from, say, a gueze. This went surprisingly well with the berry pie that I was eating at the time. The mouth feel was sort of thin and resiny. This was good, not my favorite style, but one that I'm learning to appreciate. It'd probably drink one again with a dessert sometime.

Golden brown in color with patches of white or off-white head. No head retention or lacing. Smells of apple cider vinegar, fresh granny smith apple, and a touch of earthy malt. The taste comes on quite tart with more apple flavor. Lots of sweetness comes through as well; very fruity and mostly clean tasting. Earthy, funky flavors are there but are definitely in the background, mostly covered up by the sweetness and tartness.

Pours out light amber with a thick foamy head that dissapates very slowly leaving nice lacing.
Smell is cherry and orange and mabey some cinnamon?
There is also a slight metallic aroma but it is hidden way in the back.
Damn, the first taste is mediciney sour like biting into a lemon. This is very sour and I have tasted this flavor but can't put my finger on it. It is like having a mouthfull of Sweetarts where all of the sugar is missing.
Mouthfeel is gritty at first but ends up pretty clean.
Too sour for me right now.

A: A dull, carmely golden color on the light brown side of things. Seems to have decent carbonation but a miminal head, only a small ring and a few wispy clouds on top.

S: Wow. Apple cider on the sour side, lots of oak, honey and some cherries.

T: Immediate sourness. Fermented red apples, very woody and a light muscat sweetness. Finishes some what dry with just a bit of toffee.

M: Light to medium bodied with a sharp carbonation.

D: Decent sour. Fairly common as far as sours go, but that still means its pretty good. Not as complex as it could be but very refreshing.

Enjoyed on tap at Bier Station in Kansas City out of a small Belgian-style tulip glass.

Appearance - Pours a shiny golden translucent color with blonde highlights and some patches of darker brass. Head is bright white and two fingers thick, consisting of extremely fine bubbles with just a few larger bubbles smattered throughout. Takes a few minutes to dissipate, leaving a opaque curtains of lacing coating the sides of the glass.

Smell - Very enticing, with the dominant aroma of Granny Smith and pineapple along with notes of wet hay, a little bit of barnyard funk, fresh lemon and some acidic vinegary characteristics. Some faint astringency that ends up providing a kick without ruining the smell. Actually, I like the sinus-clearing aspect of it.

Taste - A lot of similar profiles to the smell, with more green apple, now with some Anjou pear and now I get some oak and other elements of fragrant wood on the finish. Reminiscent of chardonnay with some characteristics of tannin.

Mouthfeel - Light bodied with aggressive carbonation and a very dry finish that almost leaves you grasping for a glass of water... or another sip of delicious beer.

Overall, a very tasty beer that's lighter in character than most oud bruins that I've had the pleasure to sample. It makes it a little more refreshing, but also a little bit one-note in my opinion.

330 mL bottle with a best by date of 05/02/11. Pours an astonishingly clear gold color with a voluminous white foam that fades pretty slow for a sour and leaves some nice lacing.

Mouth-wateringly acidic with a little bit of vinegar and pickled eggs on the nose. Maybe a little bit of rotting wood, but the sourness is pretty strong.

Lightly malted, gripping sourness on the flavor with some tannic wood and tart fruit coming out. I wish the malts were a bit more assertive and maybe some darker fruit would be nice. It does have a nice level of sourness, especially for the price (about $3.50), it can fix a sour craving at the very least. Pretty tasty, but lacks the depth behind the sourness to really keep things moving. That said, I will most definitely buy a few more of these for the cellar, it's a great value.

Picked up this little number up for 6 bucks (yes, I live in PA). Pours with a minimal head which is fine for this style I think..looks great overall: golden, very effervescent.

Smell is sour apple, some cherry, and vinegary funk. I find this desirable in a beer; my girlfriend insists it tastes/smells like fizzy vinegar

Taste is sour cherries and light fruit and a bit of oak on the finish. The oak is pretty much hidden by tartness and not as noticeable as it could be. Would def benefit from more oaky flavors.

Mouthfeel is perhaps it's greatest asset. It's very fizzy and will suck every drop of moisture from your mouth. This is a good thing in a sour beer.

Overall, I like it and would get it again possibly, although I prefer Rodenbach Grand Cru and there are a ton of other sours I want to try before I will feel a need to revisit.

A nice golden color with light fingers and a low head. Citrus aroma with hints of green apples, tangerine. Pleasant to smell. Tart and sour at first but thins out to slightly sour pale which is enjoyable. Spritzy on the tongue at first bouncing around the cheek and mouth. A good beer overall.

Pours a bright fizzy gold, with a quickly dissappearing short white head. Aroma is kind of a sweet and sour vinegar - not a balsamic sweetness like you find in the Duchesse. Taste is intensely sour. Not offputting like a certain geuze I could not choke down, but defiantely tart enough to make you take notice. Some sweetnes in there too. Maybe like a granny smith apple. Nothing cloying, but enough to give your taste buds a bit of a repreive. Smooth body, mild carbonation, no trace of alcohol. Drinkability is lower for me becouse of the extreme sourness. This is a dry sipper for sure. Will buy this again.

I don't really see how this is categorized an oude brun, oh well I'm gonna review it as one. Poured into a tulip, hazy amber with some deep honey color sits under a two finger rocky head. This beer leaves behind some nice lacing. Vinegar and lemon up front, following underneath there is some horsey brett charecter and damp old wood. Aside from the apperance the taste is where I find the greatest departure from the said style. Fairly zingy beer with a real basement quality, citrus, earthy hay, and a plan round malt body. The beer feels well balanced on my tongue, and surprisingly has a long finish for a beer of the type. I believe this beer is delicious, I truly enjoyed it, but an oude brun, no.

this was a gift and was enjoyable, not much experience with sours, but i do prefer monks cafe flemish.

pours beautiful clear golden hued color, pretty beer to be sure. really liked the musty, sour apple aroma, the best part of this beer. taste not bad, sour but not offensive. not hard to finish, but one was enough, not the most drinkable beer.

overall ok, ill try anything but will stick with the monks for now.

A: Pale, clear yellow... a moderate creamy/fizzy head.

S: Sour fruits, apple + cherry, and perhaps a little floral.

T: Moderately tart, sour fruits. Maybe not as much to my liking as some of the Flanders Reds, but reasonable.

M + D: Easy to drink, has a little expressiveness, and ultimately rather mild. Maybe a little boring, but not a bad beer by any means.
