12oz in a Westmalle Goblet.

A- Golden, mildly turbid, creamy head.

S- Banana, some biscuit and yeast, little bit of sour in there.

T- Banana and some candi up front, malt backbone is there, little bit of hop bitterness and a touch of sourness in the finish. Pretty straight forward.

M- Medium, good carbonation.

O- Prettygood representation of the style... it is one of the top dogs in the lower class tripel category... It's no westmalle, urthel, chimay, or st. B, but it's pretty good simple tripel, making a pleasurable drink. I would drink it again if there wasn't a better tripel around.

From a 330 ml bottle (an indecipherable code is printed on the bottle) into a tulip.

A-The beer is crystal clear and pale-golden-straw in color. There is a stream or two of carbonation visible to support the two-finger tall head of white foam. Retention is roughly a minute and no lacing is left behind. Somewhat odd looking for a tripel...looks more like an American BMC-style lager.

S-The aroma opens with a fruity metallic twang that suggests cider, white grape, and apple juice. There is a bit if bubblegum yeast aroma in there and a touch of dough, but also an off-putting malted graininess that -- like the appearance -- suggests a BMC-style lager.

T-The taste tracks the smell with a bit less fruit/cider flavor, but still a rather uninspiring malt flavor that tastes a bit like cooked corn. The alcohol is medicinal and there is still a bit of metallic twang. The finish has a vague, hoppy bitterness and grainy crispness. Very little Belgian yeast flavor.

M-The feel is quite light for the style with assertive carbonation that, again, wouldn't feel out of place if I were drinking a Bud Light.

O-I am pretty disappointed in this beer. I like some other Petrus offerings, but this one misses the mark in pretty much every category. I find the cooked corn maltiness to be especially odd here and the other flavors are strangely fruity and unbalanced. The assertive carbonation also detracts from the rest of the beer.

Appearance: Hazy golden brown with some suspended sediment. The head is off-white, small, and coarse, but retains well. This, scattered, fine-beaded lacing coats the glass walls. There is slight and slow-rising carbonation.

Aroma: Dense aroma of honey dominates the aroma. Cloves, coriander, orange rind and honey are notable as well. Spicy alcohol, as well as a sweet dessert bread add to the complexity.

Taste: Opens with a strong, spicy note, soon followed by a wave of modest earthy hop flavors. Bitter apple rind soon follows, with a wave of brown sugar, and prominent spicy alcohol. Finishes slightly sweet and earthy, with a pleasant warming note.

Mouth feel: Smooth, soft, and full, with zesty carbonation.

Drinkability/notes: A fine example with pleasing complexity.

Presentation: Packaged in an eleven-point-two ounce Euro-style long neck bottle, with a pry-off crown, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.

Poured out of a chilled 750 ml corked bottle into a Petrus tulip (came in gift pack with the beer).

A: Golden color, slightly hazy. Chunky white head, good retention, heavy lacing.

S: Green grapes, pears, mild spices, and floral notes.

T: Grainy malt, grapes and pears right up front. Some sweetness, but not overpowering, that gives over to a mild bitter at the end.

M: Light and well carbonated. Slightly dry finish, ends crisply, clean feel.

O: An outstanding Belgian tripel. Crisp, clean, easy to drink. Not heavy at all. Everything feels in balance and each part complements the others, nothing is out of place. Drank this on a cold winter night, need to revisit the review on a humid 80 degree summer evening and see how it compares, I suspect it will be even better in that environment.
