My second Bavik (Petrus) from a lot of 3 different bottles I picked up a couple of weeks ago. After being severely disappointed in the first [Winterbier] I was hesitant in tackling the second. This one thankfully, was considerably better but still failed to offer up everything that I would have hoped for in a Belgian brew. [While I'm no Belgian beer expert, I've had the opportunity to enjoy more than 25 different Belgian brews to this point, of which most presented very consistent characteristics that made me and like many other beer fans, instant Belgian beer fans).
Petrus Old Brown is packaged in a very small 8.4fl oz brown bottle with a foil capped enclosure. On opening the brew delivered a brief spritz (almost pop like) and gave off a very very sour aroma.
Pours an exceptionally dark brown color with a big bubbly, oily brown head that slowly gave way to a foamy surface cover along with extensive glass lacing. Thankfully this one doesn't suffer from the beavy of yeast particles that their Winterbier had.
Quite aromatic with heavy fruity aromas similar to that of fruit cake, extensive malty smells, and even a slight burnt toastiness to it.
Taste wise, the brew is suprisingly mellow. Quite reserved in characteristics but also very oily for a beer, but I found that the oily complexure here wasn't quite like that of a Stout.. Lots of fruity flavors run through the palette like blood orange, cherry, figs and prunes. There is definitely some yeast in the flavor, but not in the texture (a nice plus). Interestingly, although this one is promoted as "aged in oak casks for 2 years," it does not delivery a heavy oak flavor in the palette, although there is a slight hint in it, don't expect an oaky hit like you'll get in some of the drier Chardonnay wines on the market.
Compared to my first Petrius experience, this one was considerably better, but still not deliverying everything that I'd hoped for. Still, if you're looking for something different, this is still soemthing worth a closer look.

12 oz bottle into tulip
A- Dark, dark brown. Thin tan head. No lacing
S- Slight sour - funk. Gets a little salivation
T- Mehh. A very slight sweetness on the begining, but not much flavor. Tiny bit of tart/sourness on the end
M- Smooth, but nothing intersting
O- This may be a good sour for those just dipping into sours, but I expect a lot more from my sours. Good thing I didn't pay a lot for this in the "sour power" box.

Small bottle into Duvel tulip glass.
Murky medium brown. Small-medium head.
Smell has "Flandersy" notes; sour but with a touch of brown sugar; spoiled fruit.
Taste also has some honey in the finish; also, some cherry notes.
Not as acidic as I remembered/expected, but certainly refreshing and pretty light.
A delicious, classic beer.

Brilliant brown pour with small tan head. Funky sour cherry aroma. Taste is initially sweet but soon tart and malty. Finishes dry. Soft mouthfeel. Low to medium carbonation works well with the tart taste. The carbonation does not overpower the beer or accentuate it too much. In other words. The carbonation level is just about right. Drank at The Friendly Place in San Antonio, a cool casual place with a great selection and very knowledgable staff. A pleasant experience all around.
