Poured from a bottle into a Duvel snifter. The beer looks brown coming out of the bottle, but in a glass held up to the light it looks deep ruby-red (beautiful). There is a nice big tan head that has surprising good retention for a beer with this acidity. The nose is very faint. I get some fruity esters that smell like ripe cherries. As the beer warms a bit, the nose takes on some nice sweet malty notes (like toffee).

The beer has a medium body and a firm mouthfeel. The feel is enhanced by the carbonation, which stimulates the palate nicely. On the front of the tongue, I get faint toasty notes and pleasantly tart cherries and blueberries. The hop character is practically nonexistent and the mild acidity extends across the entire palate. I don't get much malt character, besides the toasty notes mentioned earlier. The finish has a slight touch of spice and apple-like sweetness, but it doesn't linger very long.

Overall, this is a very refreshing, though light-flavored, beer. Very enjoyable and easy to drink. A nice entry beer for someone just starting to explore the weird world of sours. I think I prefer Petrus Aged Pale better. The flavor of that beer is a bit more intense and interesting.

Appearance: a nice deep brown pour with a medium tan head.

Smell: an exceptionally tart nose....sweet n sour....strong cherry notes and hints of tart raspberry. some woody hints as well.

Taste: again with the Petrus beers it seems that the nose is the highlight and the taste leaves much to be desired. The taste maintained it's cherry & woody characteristics but they were sverley toned down on the palate and faded much too quickly. A dry and woody finish which was most pleasant.

Mouthfeel: somewhat lively and fresh. a dry and crisp finish.

Drinkablilty: better than the Triple and Speciale. not bad.

Appearance – Nice dark brown body with a decent head.

Smell – Lively mix of malt covered in sour candy. There are some light fruits in there as well, but the overpowering sour sugar dominates this aroma.

Taste – The traditional flavors wimp out at the tongue. The sourness is there with a decent malt base, but it’s very light and watery. After drinking their Aged Ale bottle, this offering disappoints.

Mouthfeel – Nice, tight carbonation and some reasonable sourness help along this ale, but the thinness of the body all but ruins the effort.

Drinkability – I’ll stick with the Aged Ale.

Petrus Oud Bruin pours out with deep and rich, woody brown color; it looks nearly black from afar once it makes it into the glass, and it exhausts a beautiful ruby shade when held in front of the light. The grey-ish, beige-ish head settles to less than a quarter-inch within a few moments; some good amounts of lacing outlines the glass where the beer used to be.

Must is the largest and most prominent thing in the aroma; dirty, earthy must with a substantial amount of woody funk. Dry oak is complimented by just a small hint of acetic tartness; faint lemon, vanilla barrel notes, and a mild kiss of cherry skins. People expecting a highly sour and saliva-pumping aroma will be disappointed - it's much heavier on the oaky, musk aroma.

Following through with that notion, the tartness is low on the palate as well, although there is a very mild acidic-like astringency that kind of bites the back of the tongue. Now imagine ripping a floorboard straight from an abandoned barn and taking a lick; lots of dirty funk, heavy oak, heavy must, and a touch of hay.

The more I drink, the more this beer starts tasting like a Belgian dubbel with the accompaniment of a very mild tartness. Fruit notes get larger and larger; sweet plums, heavy grapes, vinous and wine-like stone fruits. Even some additional nutty and cocoa powder hints on the very back-end, inside of a finish that's dominated with plenty of dry oak. Thin-medium body with subtle carbonation and a smooth, soft mouth feel.

Those who buy this beer expecting a tart or sour ale like the Petrus Aged Pale will be slightly disappointed, as this beer both more dry and sweet than tart, really. It really reminded me of a dubbel with some vinous additions an a touch of astringent tartness. Drinkable due to overall low acidity, but there are better shelf things you can probably grab for this style.

A: A deep copper with excellent clarity. The long lasting, medium-tan head is comprised of fine bubble and leaves lacing on the glass.

S: The aroma is mainly a moderate tart/sour aroma with some fruit, mostly dried cherries. There is a sweet aroma giving a Smarties type impression with the fruit and tart aroma. No hops, no malt, no diacetyl. Light notes of chocolate come it warms.

T: This has a nicely balanced sweet-tart flavor with a tartness being slightly stronger than the sweetness. There is little hops bitterness and no flavor. The fruit flavors are mostly tart cherry. There is some light spicy and vanilla flavors.

M: Medium bodied with moderately-high carbonation. Somewhat smooth.

O: This is a great, balanced sour beer. It not to sour and is great a example to introduce wine drinkers to a complex, flavorful beer.

Several inches of khaki head falls slooow into an opaque molasses beer and leaves intricate lacing. Aromas are nuts, berries, and brown sugar.

Tase is a light medley vinous fruit, cherry cordial, and green apple all pulled down by darker fruit tastes, slight anise, and a taste that sort of reminds me of finnel. Despite the flavors described this is a very light, smooth, easy drinking beer. Mouthfeel is slick but light. I feel like having this beer without pairing it with some crazy food was a waste. It is a great one for the table, complex but easy-going.

A: nothing remarkable to speak of. dissipating head, deep amber body. tiny bit of lacing and stick.

S: cherries, acidity, a little bit of wood, barbeque sort of salty bacon fat

T: pretty soft and coating, light malt, some barely tart fruit and a tiny bit of sugar up front. herbal, tea like qualities mid palate as the acidity pulls through. more pronounced cherries. finish dries a bit but I have to admit this falls a little flat even before the swallow can be completed. theres a decent level of complexity and interest here but I dont think it follows through. crisp and refreshing, the acidity is light enough to be very versatile.

M: eh. its okay. a little on the soft and weak end. this beer should have plenty of life left in its bottle but already seems to be getting tired.

D: interesting. enjoyable. worth a shot for sure...dont know about much after that.

750mL bottle poured into a couple wine glasses

It pours a deep rich looking brown with a tight creamy looking head that sticks around for a little bit. Potent crimson highlight can be seen when held up to a light.

The nose is of light candied cherries with just a little lactic bite. A little bit of vinous and dirt is also there.

The flavor starts off with some candied cherries but not nearly at a level of beers like the Duchesse. It then gets nice and creamy with some dirt like Brett notes and then finishes with a light lactic finish combined with some malt sweetness.

Mouthfeel is medium full with a nice creaminess that isn't overbearing. A lower carbonation level also probably adds to the perceived creaminess. Drinkability is decent but I prefer a more sharp bite at the end in my Flanders beer to make it more drinkable.

Overall this is another pretty good easily found and affordable Flanders but lacks a little special something to make it great.

Dark mahogany pour with a tiny bubbly head that quickly forms a ring around the glass. Spotty lacing....not much to look at in the glass really. Sour cherries waft up into my nose upon first smell. Some earthy yeast and woody tones pop in along with a vinous quality and dark fruits. Quite lovely.

Sweet and sour cherry notes fight back and forth against one another in sublime fashion. Woody background that leaves a dry finish on the way down. Earty yeast twang works its way in and out of each sip. Fruity and vinous...slightly acidic with a hint of cocoa. A very enjoyable experience.

Mouthfeel is rather thin and crisp. Rolls over the palate nicely with good carbonation. This 8.4oz bottle is a tease...I could easily go for a 750 of this stuff. Incredibly drinkable and tasty. I will be seeking this one out again. Recommended.

I had this beer after enjoying an Earthmonk. This one, while still a good beer, pales in comparison. It was served in an oversize wine glass. Medium brown in color with a small light brown head that left a little bit of lacing. Aroma was mostly dark fruit with a little bit of malt. I seemed to taste mostly cherries and caramel. Medium-bodied and pleasant.

Appearance - dark brown, hues of ruby and mahogany when held up to a light; small head that lingers for a long time

Aroma - dark fruit, plums, sweet malt, slightly toasted, maybe just the slightest hint of oak

Mouthfeel - med-high carbonation that fits this style well--the carbonation enhances the sour flavors on the tongue without being too sharp

Flavor - starts with fruit, plum, maybe a touch of Concord grape; middle layers on a tart/sour (like the skin of a plum) and sweet gives way to bitter in the finish, with lingering sourness

Overall - my first Oud Bruin, and I love the balance between sweet-sour-bitter, none too strong, the flavors progressing through each sip; I agree this beer could be improved by having a bit more body

11.2 oz bottle. Pours ruby amber with a big fizzy light tan head that goes to a thin film that leaves some lacing.

The aroma is subdued - some acidic fruity sourness and some funk. As it warms it's more sweet woody cherries.

The flavor is sweet acidic malts with tart fruits and some light sourness and funk. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with some sharp carbonation.

Overall, an OK mild acidic sour that is more sweet than sour. Probably a good beginner sour.

Happy to get to sample this brew on tap at the Collins bar in NYC. Pours dark brown, with ruby hues on the edges. The nose was quite malty, with also a hint of must. Carboantion seems low, with a very slight head developed and limited lacing. Malt sweetness up front initially, then mid way lactic sourness picked up. Also a hint of cherry and vanilla. Not much yeast or hops characteristics involved in the mix. Basically a malty belgian with a sour undertone. Eh, not really for me, I'd classify this one as a middle of the road Belgian, worth a try but not of much more interest.

Smell: wood, sour mix, and grain

Taste: wood, toasted malt, slight sour mix, dark sweet fruit--maybe black cherry

Mouthfeel: super smooth, nice sweet and sour mix. high carbonation, dry, light

Drinkability: This beer is now in my top 10. I love the sourness combined with the woodiness. I have not had anything that tastes like this before. This is my favorite sour beer post my Eulogy trip to Philadelphia. The low abv means I could have several.

Pours a dark amber color with a foamy head leaving a little bit of sticky lacing. Smells funky. Sour, overripe fruit: apples, pears, plums and grapes. Taste is pretty good, sour fruit, wood, and even a cola like flavor mixed in there as well. Light body, moderate carbonation, very dry. Cloyingly dry in the finish which really hurts this, it could be much better otherwise.

The beer pours a clear reddish-brown color with a white head. The aroma is dark fruit with some grape notes. I don't get much tartness in the smell. The flavor is very light tart grapes with a nice caramel malt backbone that adds some sweetness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A decent beer, but not near as good as the Petrus Aged Pale, which is excellent.

Clear brown pour with a short tan head. Caramel, oak, cherries, and funk in the nose. Sweet and sour bite with oak, malt, and green apples in the taste. Not a really bretty beer, more of a sour mash/sour fruit combo without the buttery sweetness. Sour and dry finish.

A-Clear reddish brown with a fluffy sticky tan head.
S-Very beery, lots of alcohol and malt.
T-Brown notes of grainy toasted malt with a oaky characteristic evident.
M-Highly carbonated, medium bodied.
O-An interesting brew. Some sourness, lots of oaky wood flavor and brown notes. Not overwhelming and pretty easy to drink. An interesting style for sure. I think this is the first oud bruin that I've tried so don't have anything to compare it with. First thought is it's a decent change of pace but not a style of beer I'll be craving, but time will tell.

This beer poured a chocolately brown with a thin lacy head and tiny Belium bubbles.

Scent was a light and tart smell. Very crisp, but also very light. Was not overpowering at all and did not really give away to how sour the taste may be.

The taste was crisp and light. The draft I had was served at a pretty chilled temperature, so that may have had something to do with how crisp it was. It does leave a sour aftertaste that goes away quickly.

Very good sour beer for those who would like to try a sour, but are not ready for the super sour beers like a Berliner Weiss style.

Has a warm, bready, yeasty smell, even when the ale is fairly cold. In fact, the nose is reminiscent of hot buttered toast. A slightly sour mash note rounds out the aroma.

On the tongue, the sour flavors are the first to come across, and do so in style, running in apple cider and vaguely vinegar-like rivulets across the tastebuds. Beneath these sour notes are nice streams of toasted grains and darker malts, with definite hints of vanilla and dark fruit esters, as well as oak from the cask aging. The aftertaste is mostly toasted grains, with hints of sourness. Mouthfeel is light to medium.

The major problem I have with this beer, however, is that the sour notes--even though they seem light at first--prove overwhelming after the first mouthful, deadening the tongue to the point where subsequent sips are almost all sourness. I would have preferred a more balanced ale, or at least one that let more of the flavors come through.

Amber reddish hue with excellent clarity. A quarter inch of beige head rests on top. Aroma of tart Brett and horse blanket is moderately present. The flavor is somewhat restrained tart Brett and horse blanket along with amber malt. The mouth is fairly carbonated and refreshing.

Lemony cherry nose with traces of barnyard. Pours brilliant chestnut under a 2” fluffy tannish off-white cap that dissipates to a thick film. A tart lemony citrus cherry palate with traces of chocolate hints of fruitcake. Moderately high finely bubbled carbonation with a medium body. Juicy and refreshing.

One of those murky homebrew looking beers, a mix of a dull red with brown, resulting in a ruby hue to brown liquid that is far from approaching clarity. Aroma is soggy wood and mild sour notes.

Taste, decent, woody pale ale and oud bruin type of mix. Tastes almost exactly like the aged pale, and I believe the label or promo gear states something to that effect that one beer is a percentage of the other. Slight vinegar in the mouthfeel. Kinda thin body, well carbed, underperforms with the sour and tartness, isn't balanced, leans with an american brown ale vibe at times moreso than oud bruin.

If you're buying this for sour factor, you're probably going to be disappointed, unless you truly like it as just one of the elements of a beer, as opposed to a dominant or appreciable element to any sufficient degree.

Murky clove brown appearance with a nice rising tan head that's slick and creamy. Arching laces. Very sharp aroma, apple vinegar and sport peppers. Interesting flavors, tartness, some sense of raisin and fruitcake and a bit of beef stake. Finishes on a citric note with a bare metallic astringency and a malty catch in the back of the throat. Nicely carbonated, bring some life to what could be too harsh. Interestingly balanced. The small bottle is about the right amount to my tastes, can't say it is remarkably drinkable.

The only beer that I have ever tried to compare to this beer is the Goudenband, and I really didn't like it very sour. However, the Petrus Oud Bruin definitely found acceptance with my palate and found a spot as one of my favorite most unique beers I have tasted in awhile. Served in a nice sized goblet, this beer gives of a slightly tinted amber brown with an off white rising head. The aroma is that of fruit and malt sweetness, and I found no sourness at all to the smell. The first sip was very sweet, and the fruit and candi sugar sweetness complements with a tart apple sharpness that is very enjoyable. A well done belgium brew that I find may be on of the best, especially within it's style. A medium bodied brew with a pretty good drinkability leaves a nice dryness. The drinkability would be a lot higher, but the sourness may be hard to handle after a few of these.
