Appearance: Deep brown with red hues. Solid head retention and lacing.

Aroma/Flavor: Slightly tart dark fruit. Toasty bordering on roasty on the palate.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, slight residual sugar. Acidity is too mild to call it refreshing.

Ahhh, Petrus, Doc’s favourite new Belgian brewer for two simple reasons: 1) It’s cheap, 2) It’s good... really what more could you want? Cheap & good is good enough for me. That said their Aged Red was not without flaws - it was cloyingly sweet with cherry cough syrup notes, will this Oud Bruin - which is one of the base beers used in the Aged Red - be a sweet cherry cough syrup nightmare... all right, slight exaggeration; mildly bad dream? Or will it triumph with a more balanced flavour? Time will tell (15 mins to be exact).

Poured from a 330ml bottle into a Duvel tulip.

A: Presents a deep hazy chocolate brown body with a thin half centimetre tan head that soon dies back to a light lace on top. Looks brown enough to qualify as an Oud Bruin. 8/10.

S: Sour cherry and musty yeast notes punctuate what is (for me at least) a delightful and classic moreish Belgian aroma - cherries and dusty cellars - can’t get more Belgian than that! [the entirety of my imagination pictures Belgium as one giant dusty catacomb with cherry trees growing throughout it]. Another whiff gives off book-like characters, it actually brings back memories of those scratch-n-sniff stickers from my primary school days - the power of a brew to make you reminisce is indeed a prodigious thing. 9/10.

T: This is the Rodenbach-en-like I was hoping for when I had the Aged Red - Sour cherries front to back, it’s not too astringent (it’s just right), apple cider vinegar lends acidity (as with any beer style that begins with “Flanders”) with a mid-palate hint of grape sugars and a mildly dry bitter finish. Oh yeah, yeast - plenty of that lending a dusty/stale character. Très Bien! 8/10.

M: Mouthfeel is a little bit lacking, a little bit watery, with a mid to light body and light but dense carbonation. 7/10.

D: The balance with this Oud Bruin is up there with the greats, however I’m almost left wanting for a tad more of the sweetness found in the Aged Red... this is though a minor complaint for an otherwise excellent brew. If you’re seeking traditional Flanders Oud Bruin flavours this is a decent introduction to the style that balances sweet and sour so aptly, à votre santé! 8/10.

Food match: Brasserie cuisine (eg; Steak frites) or a hard cheese platter are appropriate matches.

Good full bodied mouth feel. Notes of raisin, malty sweetness shine through.

A deep brown beer with reddish hues and a decent head of foam.

Notes of candi sugar, yeast, and a light tartness in the smell.

Some of the brown ale hits my palate to start. Followed by a wee bit of the candi sugar, yeast, and a very mild sour taste or two.

Light body and lots of carbonation make for a so so mouthfeel.

Very boring brew.

An interesting beer. The head actually fizzed like Alka Seltzer. Definataly a sipper.

2011 vintage. Really not much going on here, smelled like vinegar, tasted like carbonated water with a just a tiny hint of malt sweetness.

I believe I've reviewed this afore, but as I haven't yet uploaded the notes from my ever-growing backlog, I figured I'd review it live. Or maybe I just wanted an excuse to drink more Petrus...

BOTTLE: 1 pint 9.4 fl oz. Brown glass. Gold foil covers a gold hood-and-wire cap which cages a cork. Simple label art.

Acquired: At a bottle shop in Austin.

Reviewed live at low altitude in Austin, TX. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

Vintage: This is a blend of 20-30 month old Aged Pale and a second fresh brew.
ABV: 5.5%
Style: Oddly, the label description calls this a Flanders Red Ale (even though the name is obviously Oud Bruin). I'll decide which style to review as as I drink.
Serving temp: Cold. Allowed to warm over the course of consumption.
Serving vessel: Goblet.
Expectations: High (given the brewery).

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: 1 finger wide. Off-white. Fair creaminess and thickness. Light lacing sticks to the sides of the glass as the head recedes.

Retention: ~2 minutes. Average.

BODY: Deep dark amber. Not vibrant, but it has a glow when backlit. No yeast or sediment can be seen.

Looks pretty average for a Flanders Red, albeit a bit dark.

AROMA: Lightly tart, with hints of cherry and faint acetic pie crust. Has a kiss of vinegar. Faint oak (more a foeder than barrel presence) guides the beer and lends it natural cohesion. Belgian character is lent by the Belgian yeast, with fruity and lightly sour notes filling it out nicely. Sourness is timid and mild - maybe a 3/10 in terms of intensity. This certainly doesn't suggest a puckering brew, and its relative sweetness indicates its youth. The rawness of the cherry is nice, but a more refined fruit profile and more acetic aroma would be ideal, as would more sourness.

Aromatic intensity: average.

This definitely evokes more a Flanders Red than an Oud Bruin.

TASTE: The faint acetic character is nice, but it doesn't fully commit to the pie crust like it should, and the cherry fruit is too sweet and young; more tartness and sourness would be better. The oak is too timid and weak, but does lend the beer cohesion. Slightly vinegary. Belgian red malts and a kiss of candi sugar provide the odd malt backbone, which feels too sweet for a Flanders Red (or an Oud Bruin, for that matter). The yeast just hasn't taken hold like it should, and the beer isn't sour or tart enough as a result. Sourness is a scant 2-3/10 in terms of intensity; hardly puckerworthy.

Depth of flavour: Average.
Flavour duration: Average.
Flavour intensity: Average.
Flavour amplitude: Above average.

It's not egregiously flawed, but it could and should be so much deeper and more intricate. As-is, it's a balanced cohesive brew, but is reserved and doesn't commit to its flavours. The yeast and bacteria should shine, but they don't have control of the beer.

TEXTURE: Acidity is typical of the style, which is to say it's above average. Smooth, wet, medium-bodied, aptly thick, aptly hefty, and aptly weighty on the palate. Critically, it's not puckering as it should be, and lacks tartness. Well-carbonated.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy.

This texture fails to accentuate the best notes in the flavour profile - the sourness. As a result, the mouthfeel lags behind the taste in terms of playing to the beer's strengths. Execution is wanting as a result.

OVERALL: This is enjoyable, and will likely get better with age (say, 5 years), but it's just not as rich or well-layered as other traditional Belgian offerings. The discerning drinker will be better served by sticking with Rodenbach, Duchesse de Bourgogne, or Cuvee Des Jacobins Rouge. This is the lesser of the widely distributed classic Flanders Red Ales, and will please fans of the style but won't impress. I'd much sooner take Petrus' other offerings over this, and I think the blend has incorporated far too much of the younger beer. That said, it's highly drinkable, would pair well with salad, and would make a good first sour beer for a newcomer to the category.

Lemony cherry nose with traces of barnyard. Pours brilliant chestnut under a 2” fluffy tannish off-white cap that dissipates to a thick film. A tart lemony citrus cherry palate with traces of chocolate hints of fruitcake. Moderately high finely bubbled carbonation with a medium body. Juicy and refreshing.

Brown body that is clear ruby in the light. Thick fluffy khaki head that laces.

First whiff is a letdown compared to the Aged Pale. The taste is as well. Sort of tastes like a dunkel with a mildly tart edge and metallic off flavor.

Effervescent with a light medium body.

Tart fruit and light brown sugar light vanilla and earthy woodiness. Great brew, I'm surprised I haven't rated this before.

Served from tap in a tumbler at Firkin.

Finishing off my day at Firkin by revisiting a beer I vaguely remember trying way back in my NoVa days. It pours a clear midnight tawny topped by a finger or so of dark khaki foam. The nose basically reminds me of a jar (if one were to exist, of course) of maple syrup-laden malt vinegar. The taste flips things a bit, having some tart vinegar tinging dry maple syrup, with a touch of muted brine making a brief cameo near the beginning of the finish. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation, a slick feel, and a sorta/kinda drying finish. Overall, an odd beer, really, what with its inability to decide on a flavor path (vinegar-leaning or maltily sweet), but it still retains its drinkability.

Interesting take on the oud bruin style, leaning towards the sour ales. Brown in color with minimal head, and some cider/wine aromas. Taste is tart, and slightly sweet. A good dessert beer.

S: acetic acid, balsamic vinegar, oak

T: less sour than expected, sweet and sour flavor, oak is present, flavor is quite mild, sour is present with good malt

M: thinner and refreshing

O: an approachable sour

Pours a very dark brown tinted red, one finger of khaki colored head, settles to a thin ring, dots of lace down the glass. Smell: balsamic, cherry, brown sugar, note of soured stone fruit. Taste: sour peach, cherry, vanilla-ish note, blackberry, herbal...fair amount of herbal bitterness; not much acidity. Carbonation is a little high and aggressive making it feel unrefined for the style.

It had a sourness that wasn't overwhelming and made me taste buds pucker but not for long. It's a unique sour beer that one should try to expierence the vast varitey of brews.

As someone who is not well versed in sours, this is delicious! The sourness is there but not overbearing. Black cherries, sweet malt, nutty, some funk. Medium carbonation. It's pretty light and one dimensional. Clean finish. Although I can tell this is pretty tame for a sour, it's fantastic. A very welcome and unique departure from the usual of IPA's, stouts, and pale ales. Definitely worth a try.

I hesitate to even review this, given that I don't think I like the Oud Bruin style (i.e. ignore the rating). That said, this seems to fit the style well. Strong, full aroma of oak and tannins, puckery mouthfeel, and a mild sourness in both the lead and finish. Persistent head, pretty red-brown color. Worth trying if you're into sour beers.

Nutty and grassy, refreshing to an unusual degree for a tart brew. this is a great beer for people like myself who like sours, but haven't yet acquired the taste for the most extreme, puckering outer limit of the style. If that describes you, this beer is probably underrated.

Good sour fruit flavors, cherries, maybe green apple, and grapes. I did not pick up anything from the wood. The finish is very nice with lingering flavors of grape juice..

My experience with all other Petrus offerings has resulted in them becoming my benchmark for sours. This did not go there. But I think it was not supposed to. As a brown, it really balanced the malty sweetness with what Flanders tends to bring with sour. This beer is ripe for pairing with hearty stew.

Fairly underrated brew. The aroma does not nearly match the flavor. Melanoidins, sweet, toasted bread, caramel, dominate. Flavor is fairly dark malty and sweet, but there's a nice tart, lactic finish to contrast.

Appearance: Brown and cloudy - a dirty beer. Light color head quickly rises and dies away. Some lacing

Smell: Fairly light sour, yeasty, bready, barnyard smells.

Taste: Not too sour, acidic, some sweetness, apple, not much complexity. The malt and other flavors came through better as it warmed up. A somewhat dry finish reminiscent of an apple wine.

Mouth feel: Beer is well carbonated, medium bodied.

Overall: A pretty good standard sour. Mildly sour, but not very complex in flavor. OK at the right price point, but I would generally seek out other choices of this style.
