a - dark reddish brown. lots of carbonation.

s - alcohol and vinegar sourness. actually smells a lot like champagne.

t - a little lack luster. only a tad sour. lots of caramel and malts. hint of some grape flavor.

m - thin body, for as much carbonation as there was on the pour, there is hardly any in the body.

overall - reminds me more of NG old english porter than the (few) oud bruins I've had so far...although what do I know. needs more carbonation in the body, and its too sweet and malty.

Pours copper with ruby highlights and a quickly fading head.
Nose reminds me of a pungent white wine (which I'm not a fan of) with some soft grainy malt and balsamic vinegar. Later on delicate berries and plums are noticeable.
Flavours are much different, and much more malt-centred. Sweet and tangy at first with plenty of acidity and grape notes, then giving way to a lot of bready, woody malt making most of the short finish.
Carbonation is extremely high. Combined with the acidity this makes for a very prickly beer.

A: poured a syrup looking brown with ruby highlights that had a thin head and left a little bubbly lacing on the glass.

S: it had vinegar and dark fruit aromas with some oaky funk and a little underlying grain notes. It also had slight vinous notes.

T: the grians and slight vinegar flavors strike first on the palate with oak and slight vinous accents that also had a little wheat malt presence.

M: medium body with a moderate amount of carbonation that had slight sweetness and grainy finish.

D: the brew drank well but was expecting more tartness considering it was a flanders style beer. I think it needed more of sour punch.

Appearance -- Pours a deep brown with ruby highlights, good clarity, with two fingers of rocky beige head. Thick bands of lacing.

Smell -- Raisin, molasses, cider vinegar, green apples, cocoa powder.

Taste -- Roast malt and a hint of raisin along with Granny Smith. Instead of the vivid tartness the nose implied there is a lingering tangy element throughout the sip. Wet lumber oakiness makes itself known in the finish. Overall, everything tastes muted.

Mouthfeel -- Light in body with ample prickly carbonation. Finish is slightly dry. By far the most satisfying component of this beer.

Drinkability -- While this was an easy-drinking beer, there wasn't much exciting going on. Sure, you could drink this all night, but why? It tastes thin and watered down. This was a bit of a let down. Next time I'll stick with their Aged Pale.

Poured into a Duvel tulip. A clear reddish dark brown. A thin head soon diminishes to a ring. The nucleating scores on the glass support an island of head in the middle. Dark malt smells. Very smooth. Malts give way to a very moderate sour finish. Mouthfeel is surprisingly light for a bark beer. The carbonation brightens it up a bit.

Appearance: A murky brown body capped by two fingers of cream-colored head that fade slowly and leave no lacing.

Aroma: A great mix of sour and vinegary notes over a sweet malt body. Mouthwatering.

Flavor: Just as the nose foreshadowed; a balanced combination of tart and sour flavors riding over a sweet malt body. Unfortunately, this is nowhere near as intense as the nose and ends up way too subdued for my tastes. Very mild sweet and sour flavors in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with somewhat spritzy medium-high carbonation and a drying finish.

Drinkability: This is surely an easy drinker if you like sours. However, I think I'd get a little bored and order one of their Aged Pales next.

Verdict: I have to say, Petrus Oud Bruin is a bit of a frustrating beer to me. Clearly, the basics are in place, but the flavor profile is just too thin, like the beer has been watered down slightly and served extremely cold.

First offering from Petrus.

Appearance- A nice, very clear brown color. About the color of cola.... although more clear. A think tan head that faded more quickly than I expected.

Smell- Slightly sour.... as I expected. A little thin. Tough to describe... it just smelled kinda thin.

Taste- Slightly sweet, slightly sour. Lactic acid was evident in the slightly vinegar flavor. I don't want to misrepresent. It wasn't bad, or out of character for the style. Nice. I disagree with previous posters though, in that I think it tasted a little better as it warmed more. Some woodiness... maybe some pomegranate?

Mouthfeel- Slightly thin. Didn't coat the tongue or have much of an aftertaste. Dry, clean finish.

Drinkability- What you'd expect from the style.

11.2 oz bottle poured into two New Glarus tasters (one for the wife)

A - Medium to dark brown; small, quickly fading head and no lacing

S - Cola, sourish yeast

T - Yeast, apples, apricots, and cider vinegar. Finishes slightly sour - nicely balanced overall.

M - Well-carbonated & refreshing

D - Easy to drink

Nice beer here - my first from Petrus. I'll be buying more.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Belgian glass.
Shows a very attractive garnet color (yeah I'm going with garnet, it's apt!) and a thin, fizzy off-white head. The head leaves a ring throughout drinking and comes back with some swirling. Leaves some spotty lacing.
The nose is quite nice but a little subdued. Still picked up scents of cherry, a cedar/oak woodiness, and cranberry juice.
The taste is much the same, cranberry and cedar/oak wood along with dark cherries, and a hint of some tobacco and vanilla. This beer reminds me quite a bit of a cabernet franc. Has just a touch of tartness balanced with the fruitiness and a clean, dry finish.
Pretty highly carbonated and smooth, a little bubbly. For its fairly complex tastes, however, the high carbonation gives it kind of a cheap soda taste. The warmer it gets the more it tastes like grape soda. I wanted to give the taste a 4, but this made me downgrade. Drink it cold, as the label suggests!
Highly drinkable for the style.
Not bad if you don't have Haandbakk available, and it has some character, but it doesn't have much of that powerful sweet & tart oud bruin richness to it.

The beer pours a clear reddish-brown color with a white head. The aroma is dark fruit with some grape notes. I don't get much tartness in the smell. The flavor is very light tart grapes with a nice caramel malt backbone that adds some sweetness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A decent beer, but not near as good as the Petrus Aged Pale, which is excellent.

Another new beer to our local Belgian selection. This one poured with some big white bubbles but not that much of a head. The lace did stay around a little.

The nose is very weak. It doesn't smell bad but it really doesn't have much smell

Taste is a little tart with some dark fruit. Not real complex but refreshing. Mouth feel is rather effervescent. Pretty drinkable but not worth seeking out again.

750 ml bottle for $7, I figured it was worth it to try this style that I don't normally buy due to the price.

Pours a nice clear syrup brown with about an inch of brown rice colored head. Retains ok, though not super well. Smell is pretty tart, a bit of the apple cider vinegar, some funkiness, a bit of sugary sweetness to it too. Smells pretty good, though a bit more reserved than some.

Taste follows with the nice familiar tart and tangy acidic start. A bit of prickly vinegar flavor starts it out, followed by a bready brown ale malty finish. Actually pretty nice, my only complaint is that the flavors seem a little subdued. Maybe it's just what I'm looking for tonight, but I would like to see one of the notes have a little more kick to it. A hint of a metallic off-note twinge on the finish too.

Feel is light and prickly with decent carbonation. Somewhat dry, though not as much as what most people are saying. Just a good easy drink that has some nice flavors.

On the pour, this was a nice, clear brown ale with a one finger head. It subsided to a thin layer with spotting, which was unusual but kind of cool.

Aroma was slightly sour and a little funky. Mostly I got oak and fruits. They leaned toward cherries, almost like a kriek, but weaker. I liked it.

Taste was lightly sour and some tannins, but that was about it. No pucker, no taste of the wild.

Mouthfeel was very dry. By that, I mean moistureless. After I swallowed, I got no refreshment. It was like I hadn't just taken a mouthful of liquid.

Drinkability... okay, I'll give it just a little boost. It wasn't that bad, it went down easily. If it were just a little more flavorful it would be a good session beer.

Maybe my taste buds were overwhelmed by a bottle of Bashah I had earlier... but with an hour and a glass of water between the two, I doubt it.

Poured into a Chimay goblet.
Pours clear medium brown with garnet highlights. A thin cap of foam. Aroma is wood, tart acid, fruitiness both tart and sweet. A sort of sweetness throughout that's hard to capture. Taste is light, I can't really pick out specifics. The finish brings a light sourness as well as a slight funk. Very refreshing. Feel is light, smooth with a very dry and barely puckering finish.

I'm just starting with sours and this is very approachable. Everything seems very subtle.

A - Mahogany, and fairly opaque. Very thin, weak head.
S - Easter egg paint and natural wood. Mild nose compared to some in this style.
T - Very little sourness, which is surprising. A sharp, brett dryness. Finish is bitter grapefruit, but no sweet or sour flavors here. Very dry.
M - Mildly gummy, but not bad. Less pop than some in this style.
D - Very easy drinking. Low alcohol content (5.5%), and very dry. Good spring beer.
Drank in a balloon glass at 50-55deg.

Poured in a tulip glass

Appearance: It is the color of a dark, sweet tea. A quickly dissipating, but ample head like that of champagne.

Smell: Oak and cherries. There is a pleasant woodiness and fruitiness in the aroma with a bit of vinegar.

Taste: I must confess this is my first sour ale, so it is difficult to score other than what I have read. This beer is sweet and sour, like a good Chinese pork. Indeed, the bottle says it can serve as a good marinade for beef. I can definitely get that in the taste. There is a sourness, but I expected more sour, more funk for the style.

Mouthfeel: Very nice, effervescent feel on the palate with a bit of pucker.

Drinkability: The abv is almost session range and the beer goes down easily. I was worried about opening this 750 by myself, but quickly found the bottle empty.

Aged 2 years in Oak Casks stated on the bottle.

Pours a nice clear brown ale color with a white head that later rests to just white lacing.

Smell of sour cherry, brown malt, some oak and some light vinegar.

Taste of a very muted brown ale. I enjoy and nice brown ale and that is really the impression I received of this beer. Not so much a sour / oud bruin. Most who have had oud bruins would say this does not really match the norm for the style. As such I am giving it a lower rating, but it is not a bad brown ale all taken. Slightly dry and tempered, it is not a wild beer, more like a very slightly infected mild brown ale. Caramel, toffee match a light oak presence. Medium mouthfeel and a light carbonation.

Small capped bottle, poured into a tulip.

Light brown in color, with an off white head that does not hold at all. It shows very little carbonation, which will again be noted on the palate, common for the style.
The aroma, just like the flavor is disappointing. Sweetish and fruity, but lightly so. Musty, acidic, sour notes are held to a bare bones minimum, and complexity is just not there.
A miss.

A- Deep root beer brown with a fluffy off white head that fades to nothing. Lots of bubbles are clinging to the side of the glass.

S- Lightly vinegary, faintly sour some sour milk. Plenty of sweet berries round it out. Its really actually pretty close to a mixed berry yogurt.

T- Not really very sour. A little vinegary and yogurty. The berries are all there in force.

M- Lighter, dry and prickly

11.2 oz bottle, cheap stuff.

Pours a nice brownish red, slightly clear with some nice carbonation bubbles rising. The head is large and off-white and sticks for a bit before leaving nice lacing.

The smell is pretty fruity, mostly cherries. There is a slight vinegar smell as well. No real sign of the oak.

The mouthfeel is watery, seems like most Petrus brews are. The taste is light, with some metallic notes. There is also some tart cherry.

This one along with monk's Cafe are utterly forgettable examples of this style.

This is one that I had never heard of before, and I also don't think I've ever seen an Oud Bruin style beer in a bottle, so I had to try it. The label says that it is an Oud Bruin Ale aged in Oak Casks. It says, "Petrus Old Brown is a top-fermented dark ale brewed with the finest hops and malt varieties. Matured in oak barrels during 20 months." It says it is a product of Belgium and is 5.5% ABV.

When I poured it, it was dark brown in color, and when held to the light, it appeared to be very clear. It had a nice tan head with tiny bubbles, and it maintained a nice creamy ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass.

It smelled sweet and caramelly, almost dark, fruity, and a little raisin and toffee-like. A slight hint at its sourness was in the nose.

It was surprisingly smooth with a fairly light body. It made my tongue tingle a bit, but the sourness was much more muted than I expected. The sourness was mostly noticeable in the finish, which I also found to be very, very dry (perhaps from the sourness). As I continued to taste it, I noticed nutty, raisiny, fruity, and malty flavors. Since the label says that it is aged for almost 2 years in oak barrels, I was surprised that I didn't pick up any oak flavors in it at all.

It was surprisingly refreshing for a sour beer, and might be a great "gateway beer" if you wanted to introduce your friends to sour beers. While I was tasting it, I was thinking that it would go very well with chocolaty desserts, particularly brownies. Overall, it was a good brown ale with a bit of dryness and a hint of sourness.

750 ml bottle, 5.5% abv. Corked and caged. Pours a clear light reddish brown color. Maybe a light chestnut. Fluffy mocha head holds well for a few minutes. A few spots of lace.

Ripe fruit, a bit musty and earthy. Oak in the nose as well. Maybe some sour berries.

A small amount of tartness up front. Lots of earthy flavor. A bit of ripe dark fruit shows in. Just a bit of funk shines through. Some oaky tannins come out at the back end, and seem a bit on the harsh side.

Lighter body, with a good amount of carbonation, giving a slightly creamy and fuller feel. Could be refreshing, but the harshness from oak and earthy flavors detracts a bit.

A - bottle into a goblet. Golden at first, rich leather tan at an angle, totally opaque mahogany from the side. Small head was dense but didn't last.

S - vinegar, oak, caramel malt, vanilla, raspberry

T - all of the aromas come through nicely, while the sourness actually fades to the background. the age on this beer is perfect for a highly drinkable "old ale" style: vinegar zing is barely noticeable (not that I'd mind...), but the oaky qualities are not at all overpowering either.

M - carbonation is "meh" at best. such is life when complex aromas demand that you enjoy your beers at 55F+. not enough ABV to do anything interesting on the tongue.

D - fantastic. didn't know what to expect, but the description on my importer's label (which is somewhat different than what's pictured) was spot on: "old brown ale aged in oak casks for 2 years." a little of this, a little of that, the final result being something I could drink all night without getting bored OR drunk.

Saw this on the menu at the Beer Bistro, Toronto. Thought I'd dip my toe into a style im not too familiar with - and the cheaper price of this bottle is attractive.

A: Looks great. My server poured into a tulip and and made a nice head that stuck around a decent amount of time. not much lacing but its very inviting.

S: VERY fruity I thought. cherries and raspberries mostly I suppose. As it warmed up the sour notes began to sing. Not being experienced with these beers I wasent sure what to expect. I suppose this may a good one to start with since the sourness isnt really that pronounced.

T: Follows the nose quite well. Hops are more present in taste. I really began to appreciate the tangyness of this beer as it warmed. very fruity and very delish.

M: Quite light and refreshing.

D: Id certainly like to have a few of these. Very complex yet not overpowering

What a great beer...I'll be drinking this again for sure.
