Chilled 11.2 oz. bottle poured into a Real Ale RIS tulip.

Look- Molasses brown/opaque cola with three fingers of beige head that falls to thin film after two minutes or so. Lacing is sparse, leaving a few thin legs down the side of the glass.

Smell- Dry, musty, heavily oxidized. Faint raspberry-like sour aroma, perhaps dried apples. Vague mild sweetness at first, but second take reveals a bit of toasted biscuit. Swirling brings out a stronger sweet fruity scent that strongly reminds me of Welch's soft gummy fruit candy. Cider-like.

Taste- Similar to the nose- mix of cider, stale toasted whole wheat bread, fruit preserves, and sesame. Starts sour, and the rest comes out over the course of the swallow and savor. finishes with dry toast and champagne. Fairly sweet. Sour cherry and leathery character builds as the glass empties, but doesn't get too heavy.

Mouthfeel- Crisp on the sip, soft on the swallow. Medium body, overall a very light feel. Dry, slight pucker, but lingering sweetness and mild treacly feel keeps it from being a tongue-curler. Drinks like a shandy- easy going in the heat.

Overall- Just about what you would expect- a crisp, refreshing sour brown ale. Very precise execution, and excellent balance. Still, it's borderline bland, which isn't something I look for in a $0.40/oz. bottled beer. Worth trying, but won't make it into my regular rotation.

I’m guessing the Petrus Aged Pale is the aged version of this beer; if that’s correct, then I’m excited to crack open this bottle. The Aged Pale was one hell of a sour.

A: Dark, dark red with a huge tan head – love that dense, smooth foam. Retention consists of some light bubbles, with fat ropes of lacing appearing every time I swirl the glass.

S: Aromas of all-natural apple juice and white grape juice fill out the nose with bright sweetness, exhibiting a slight lactic acidity. Blackberry, peach, pineapple, and sweet vanilla cream make an appearance before a fruit-wheat malt aroma sets up the transition to a light phenolic finish. Fruity and enjoyable.

T: Very mild and grain-forward – where did the acids go? It starts with a smooth layer of grassy cornbread and processed wheat flavors, green and earthy, moving to a slightly fruity lemon pulp and red apple skin tone soon after. Doesn’t hit especially hard on the sours, as I said before, but there is a moment or two of natural tartness before it finishes out. Ends with an almost non-existent aftertaste, flavors of white grapes lingering for just a quick second.

M: So incredibly light that it’s displeasing, at times. There’s so much crisp foaminess and thin character that you can’t get a handle on the flavors, to a certain degree.

O: Not an overwhelmingly satisfying Flanders, but it hits some key notes of sour goodness. I’ll stick to the Aged Pale, but this was a nice expedition into lighter territory.

750 poured into a snifter

Pours a dark reddish brown with a finger thick head.

Smells of vinegar, lemon and dark cherry.

Taste is actually pretty bland for a Oud Bruin, a bit of cherry with a slight pucker to it, but no lingering notes at all and fairly underwhelming.

Very easy to drink, not much body and lightly carbonated.

This beer looked great and smelled nice, but was underwhelming when it came to the taste/body department. That said it is easy to drink and may be great to introduce others to sours before diving all the way in.
