Serving Type - Bottle

Appearance - Dark tanish brown with a 1 inch creamy tan head, lots of sticky lacing.

Smell - Sour fruits, grapes, tarts, grapefruit, malts, sweet yeasts. Some oak and grain.

Taste - Much like the smell, sour yeasty brown ale with some malt and oak backbone. Much of the sour is compairable to sour apples, grapes, plum and rasin. The oak adds a bourbon, woody flavor, and more sour.

Mouthfeel - Tounge gets nailed with sour and yeasts. After mouth adjusts to the sour, more malts, sugars and yeasts come out. The finish is dry, and aftertaste is very tart.

Overall - Pretty good example of the style. Sour but not overly sour. Nice mix of oak and malts with the sour fruits and sweet yeasts. Low alcohol, good starter into the world of sours and oaked beers.

P:  Deep dark amber body with thin silky khaki head that fades quick and settles to a bubbly swirl.

S:  Dark fruit, musty basement yeast, roasted grains, aged oak, spices and a subtle lactic acid tartness.

T/M:  The taste follows the nose with a delicate sweet tart background, aged oak, semi sweet molasses, smoldered grains, b-vitamins and earthy hops. Mouthfeel is light-medium with just a touch of bubbles. Finish is dry with lingering fruit and vitamin notes.

O:  Roasty and rustic that delivers delicate sweet and tartness. I liked this due to the aged and earthy flavors that brings the mixture into a more controlled state.

Chilled 11.2 oz. bottle poured into a Real Ale RIS tulip.

Look- Molasses brown/opaque cola with three fingers of beige head that falls to thin film after two minutes or so. Lacing is sparse, leaving a few thin legs down the side of the glass.

Smell- Dry, musty, heavily oxidized. Faint raspberry-like sour aroma, perhaps dried apples. Vague mild sweetness at first, but second take reveals a bit of toasted biscuit. Swirling brings out a stronger sweet fruity scent that strongly reminds me of Welch's soft gummy fruit candy. Cider-like.

Taste- Similar to the nose- mix of cider, stale toasted whole wheat bread, fruit preserves, and sesame. Starts sour, and the rest comes out over the course of the swallow and savor. finishes with dry toast and champagne. Fairly sweet. Sour cherry and leathery character builds as the glass empties, but doesn't get too heavy.

Mouthfeel- Crisp on the sip, soft on the swallow. Medium body, overall a very light feel. Dry, slight pucker, but lingering sweetness and mild treacly feel keeps it from being a tongue-curler. Drinks like a shandy- easy going in the heat.

Overall- Just about what you would expect- a crisp, refreshing sour brown ale. Very precise execution, and excellent balance. Still, it's borderline bland, which isn't something I look for in a $0.40/oz. bottled beer. Worth trying, but won't make it into my regular rotation.
