This is the Petrus Oud Bruin that's been aged on cherries - what could go wrong? The pour is a deep crimson color - blood red and ruby with a cherry cola tinted head that fizzes quick and rests easily as a few millimeter thick film on top of the dusk brew. Good translucency considering the relatively dark hue, as the edges beam like a ruby ring.

Sweet and candied cherries overload the aroma, very sugary and bright, almost in a sweet, fruit juice kind of way. Tartness can only be perceived with the deepest of inhales, and even then, it's barely enough to even tickle your saliva glands. Those hoping for a super sour beer can turn around right now - the aroma is already telling me that this is gonna be primarily sweet, with tartness as a mere afterthought.

The aroma does have a nice dry oak character that's persistent throughout the profile. Overall, this beer reminds me of the Lindeman's Kriek lambic, only with slightly less funk and perhaps a little more oak. Believable, since the Lindeman's Kriek has barely any oak, and this beer has barely any funk. The residual sweetness is common to both of the cherry brews.

As expected, the flavor is popping with sweet cherries (a little inuendo for you pervs out there), although I'm surprised to find that there's also a nice vinous meter that I wasn't picking up on in the aroma. Some heavy oak, musky dryness, and a touch of astringent grape skins. I still don't get any real tartness, also some may confuse the lightly astringent tannin as a pseudo-tartness.

Sweet it is, though, full of syrupy cherry and overly sweet cherry juice - think something along the lines of the cherry-flavored syrupy used for snow-cones and Slurpees. There's a finishing touch of dying cherries and very faint oaky vanilla. I would have liked some more sustainability from the oak, but nothing can stand up to the intensity of those cherries. Thin-medium bodied, almost creamy with middle of the road carbonation.

Not a bad brew, per se, but really not what most people will be looking for. You probably expect a highly oaky, dry, and tart beer with sour cherries and tons of vinous grape. Not exactly the case here. This is more of a sweet, cherry fruit beer. In that regard, it can be enjoyed more thoroughly. Looking at it that way, I much prefer this to, say, Founder's Cerise. As far as Oud Bruins go, though, it's not as hot. Still a decent thing to try for the cherry lovers out there.

A: A fine looking beer that pours a deep red with highlights of copper. The head is tan and pink with rocky bubbles and average retention.

S: A strong fruity aroma of tart red cherries and red currents. There is a light oak aroma bringing a little vanilla.

T: Fruit also dominates the flavor with strong tart cherry and red current flavors blending with a medium sweetness. Between the fruit and the light sourness there is a decent tartness with balance being moderately sweet despite all the sugar. There are some moderate spicy phenols and a little bit of oak coming through. There is a slight hops bitterness but it's the fruit and the fermentation doing the bulk of the work to keep it from being cloying. The finish is medium sweet with a cherry aftertaste.

M: A medium bodied beer with a medium-strong level of carbonation. A light alcohol warmth noticeable.

O: This beer focus on fruit, sweet-tart and light spice. If you don't like sweet beer you might want to avoid this one, I think it has a decent sweet-tart balance but the sugar is winning here

It really is red, but it's very dark and needs to be held up to light for its deep burgundy body to really show it. The head it forms is sparsely bubbled and gets to a finger's height before fading. What's left is a good cling to the edges with a few wispy islands. It manages some surprisingly sticky and prevalent lace considering.
I get cherry syrup on the nose with a lightly sour edge. Going deeper does reveal some cherry cnady, though. It's fortunate that the tartness is there or there would definitely be too much artificiality, but itdoesn't delve too far. There's a touch of earth and wood as well.
While both sweet and tart, the flavor does bring some cough syrup into the finish. There's also some unexpected spiciness. The spicy and tart elements are what carry through.
The body is very much on the light edge of medium but reaching. Carbonation is light and crispness adds bite. It does go a touch flat, though, at which point it relies too heavily on carbonation.
