Enjoyed on tap at Bier Station in Kansas City. Poured into a small Belgian tulip glass. This is one I've always been curious about, but could never bring myself to pull the trigger on a bottle, so I'm glad they tapped it.

Appearance - A wholly unique looking beer, with a deep ruby or garnet red body that is translucent. However, it's such a dark red that you have to hold it up to light to see through, even though there is no murk or haze to it. Atop the body sits a foamy off-pink head about a finger and a half thick. Starts to dissipate pretty quickly, leaving sheets of microbubble lacing on the sides as it does. Eventually comes to rest with a thick film (as thick as films go) across the surface, with some "drifting" of bubbles around the edge of the glass, like snow against a fence.

Smell - All cherry all the time--maraschino, cough syrup, bing, and even hints of sour cherries, but the nose is predominantly the sweeter side of the fruit. There is, thankfully, some acidic counterpoint, but the sweet is definitely the dominant characteristic. Some musty funk, like tree bark that has been slathered in cherry syrup.

Taste - Man, those cherries just don't quit. More cherry on cherry action, with the initial impressions of cough syrup and maraschino cherries being again emphasized. Here, the must and acidity are a little more pronounced, but then again, so is the sweetness. The entire taste is like the smell turned up to 11. Easy drinking, especially for an 8.5% beer, but it makes me think too much of those flavored malt liquors like Smirnoff Ice, even though it is definitely less sweet and more acidic than those, by far. There is a faint tart/sour component, but it's overwhelmed by the sweetness.

Mouthfeel - Prickly (in a pleasant way) mouthfeel, with medium body and light-to-moderate carbonation, but there is also a viscosity to it, like the beer had syrup added to give it some body. A little strange, but not necessarily bad.

Overall, a beer I'm not likely to order again, and while one might be tempted to recommend it as an entry-level sour beer, I don't think you get enough tartness to really acclimate a new drinker to the sour flavor profiles. I would certainly recommend it for someone who was trying to transition from mixed drinks to beer, but I think there are much better takes on the Flanders Oud Bruin style. It's times like this that I love being able to try a beer on tap instead of shelling out the full bottle price.

A - I loved the deep red, ruby color of this beer. It is definitely unusual.

S- The aroma is a nose full of cherries, but even that doesn't prepare you for the taste.

T - The first sip is overwhelmingly sweet to the point of almost being overpowering. I did manage to get through an entire glass after sipping it for quite some time, but this beer is just way too sweet to be enjoyable, at least for me. I'd hoped it would mellow but the sweetness lasted until the last drop. Definitely almost a Luden's cough drop flavor to it.

M- It coats the tongue and leaves a slippery, sweet residue. Not pleasant at all.

Consumed on draft over 10 minutes.

Pours a dense ruby red with a thin head of bubbles that linger only in a ring on the glass. The color is its greatest asset

Smells of the cherry that defines it, along with mild leathery notes and bright tart acids.

The taste is unfortunate, despite the tempting preview. It's much too sweet, and coupled with the texture, truly calls up a memory of Robitussin DM. There's some spice in the aftertaste, but it won't cut the medicine.

There's a bit of bright carbonation, but not sufficient to cut the cough syrup.

This creature is one-dimensional, and very short on the qualities that balance out a beer.

Bottle Pour in a 12 oz Goblet

A - Poured very rich dark burnt red color with a 1/4" thick head. Appearance was closer to a Quad than a Red as it is really dark.

S - Bing Cherry, Italian Plum, Allspice, Sour and a little Hop

T - First sample really brings about the sour fruit as well as sweet along with a little spice backed up by those rich Red Ale flavors you expect. More towards a Quad than a true Red Ale.

M - Medium body with a richness you are looking for in a dark beer. The feel is similar to a cough syrup and plays to the richness of the taste.

O - I was wildly surprised by this beer, pleased with the complexity of the layering in flavors and will definitely enjoy this again.
