"Petrus Aged Red" title confirmed. 8.5% ABV confirmed. 1 pint 9.4 fl oz brown glass bottle with attractive artful red label and foiled-over hood-and-wire cap (aka cage) over a cork served into a slender Belgian multibrewery-branded tulip in me parents' gaff in high altitude Castle Rock, Colorado. Reviewed live. Expectations are high given the brewery and style.

Served cold - straight from me fridge - and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a three finger wide head of health khaki-red colour. Good thickness and creaminess. Excellent (8+ minute) retention. Light even lacing as the head slowly recedes; it's not a sticky head by any means. No "legs" here.

Body colour is a dark rich amber-red with ruby and sanguine hues. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Nontransparent. Quasi-translucent in that it's glowing.

Overall, it's looking good for the style.

Sm: Lovely tart cherry fruit and accompanying light esters. Dark cherry. Biscuit malt. Clean sourness; I suspect only lactobacillus yeast (no brettanomyces or lambic yeast per se). Lightly acetic, with some cherry pie crust notes - though not as prominently featured as in a beer like Rodenbach. A biteen bready. A biteen toasty, with some very subtle oak. The label on the bottle calls it "strikingly intricate"; so far that seems to be the case. A very inviting, pleasant aroma of moderate strength. Definitely evokes a refined subtlety I haven't experienced in awhile. Really hoping the flavour delivers on the promises of the aroma.

No alcohol is noticeable and I don't detect much in terms of a hop profile.

T: Acetic dark pie crust. Dark tart cherries. Some bready and toasty character. A bit leathery (as much as I try to avoid usage of that descriptor). Constructively, the sweetness/bitterness balance is awkward, featuring both unwelcome syrupy character and a strange bitterness on the climax. Hmph. The tart fruit is nice. Finishes with a medicinal character lightly redolent of cough syrup. Not as complex as I'd hoped for, but adequate. Imbalanced and strangely built. I could definitely see where the medicinal quality would ruin this for other drinkers, but I'm able to tolerate it. Sourness is fairly timid, and I suspect mainly lacto - certainly no lambic or brett yeast. I really want more oak from it; that's a missed opportunity. Feels candied; as it warms the sweetness becomes fairly bothersome.

No alcohol or hop character comes through. Average depth, intensity, and duration of flavour for the style.

Mf: Smooth and wet. Leathery (...). Good carbonation; bottle conditioning did this one well. Good thickness and body. Decent presence on the palate. Suits the flavour profile pretty well, but doesn't quite feel custom-tailored to it. Unrefreshing.

Dr: A drinkable enjoyable beer in the style, but its flaws (medicinal cough-syrup character, lack of balance, and wanting complexity) do bring it down. I like the price point; I just wish the beer were better. I won't get this again, but I'm not regretting the purchase. This will be a divisive sour largely due to the medicinal character. Worth a try to see if you mind it or not. It straddles the line between Flanders Red and Oud Bruin, but its failure to commit to one of the two is ultimately to its detriment. I wouldn't recommend this to friends. An interesting experiment from Bavik.

Age (3-5 years) might really help this one. I'd like to find out, but I'm not willing to pick one up and hold it to find out.

Best served cold; it actually gets worse as it warms.

Incredibly complex, highly distinct and full of flavor, Petrus Aged Red borrows what's best about the sour cherry ales of the Flemish regions.

Looking like Bruin, the ale pours a tawny brown color with crimson low lights. Its diffused haze speaks to its unfiltered character to prefer full flavor. A zesty but short statured head settles on the ale with a smooth sheet across the glass before finally succumbing to its acidity midway through the session.

Sharp aromas strike the olfactory with sharp acidic notes of sour cherries, dry cider, sour cherries and light balsamic. But the scent is complemented with stern malt contributions that start toasty and with a hint of burnt sugar and tobacco. Its a moderately musty tone of aged wood and light alcohol that bring all the aromas together.

And to taste, its fruity sweetness attaches to the tongue much like hard candies and tart apple cider. Its acidic sweetness is buffered with the toast, light chocolate and candied malt taste. Somewhat of chocolate covered cherries, its savory notes bridge into balsamic vinaigrette, zinfindale and dried limes. Certainly tart and earthy- even a hint of wine-soaked oak remain on the tongue post-finish.

Medium bodied for sour, the balance of the beer comes from residual sweetness to complement the sourness. But its that left-over malt that causes the beer to feel candyish on the mouth and a little less refreshing, dry or drinkable than more tart versions. Finishing dry, tart and modestly astringent- there's a puckering bite that supplants hops and makes this ale finish more wine-like than beer-like.

Its the dark maltiness and earthen qualities that makes the beer an similar to Oude Bruin. But its sour cherry character speaks Flanders Red Ale. The culmination causes it to become either a well balanced Red or a more sour Brown.

Got this at crunchys at east lansing. Served in a snifter.

A: pours a rich cranberry, cherry color, with a short off white head, with little lacing

S: rich, fruity aroma, cherry, raspberries, lemons, barley, wheat, yeast, whiskey

T: sweet, tart, sour, strawberries, raspberries, cherries, wheat, yeast, malts, barley, very sweet

M: rich body with lower carbonation, excellent balace of sweetness and tartness.

O: man this was great, sweet, tart, not too pricey. i really liked it. try it.

My god....
How can the same brewery who makes their Pale sour so good make this travesty of a beer?
I had one last night...I was expecting nothing but a good beer, man was I surprised.
It looked great, a nice rosy hue to it, good head, all in all a fine looking brew...but the joy stops there.
The aroma of cough syrup wafted up in to my nostrils. Alarmed, I quickly set the glass down, had some water, and tried again....Robotussin 100%...Ah...crap...
So I tried it anyways, but the nose did not lie. This was like drinking carbonated Robotussin...my god..simply one of the worst beers I've had.
It's funny though, because their aged pale is so good.
Do yourself a favor and get a Lindemens Goudenband (spelling?) instead of this mediciney beer.

Nice creamy almost 1 finger head fades slowly, clear cranberry mahogany color.

Nose tons if cherry, candied maraschino cherry, cherry cough syrup, lots of sweet candy aromas, light acetic acid vinegar, brown sugar.

Taste same, candy galore, cherry cough syrup, maraschino cherry, syrupy candy, Brown sugar, light candy sugar, toffee, etc. Quite sweet light acetic acid. Finish is long sweet candy sugar and cherry galore. Booze is hidden well behind the mound of sugar.

Mouth is med bod, sticky and syrupy, lighter but decent carb.

Overall interesting, cherry is good but way too sweet.

This is the Petrus Oud Bruin that's been aged on cherries - what could go wrong? The pour is a deep crimson color - blood red and ruby with a cherry cola tinted head that fizzes quick and rests easily as a few millimeter thick film on top of the dusk brew. Good translucency considering the relatively dark hue, as the edges beam like a ruby ring.

Sweet and candied cherries overload the aroma, very sugary and bright, almost in a sweet, fruit juice kind of way. Tartness can only be perceived with the deepest of inhales, and even then, it's barely enough to even tickle your saliva glands. Those hoping for a super sour beer can turn around right now - the aroma is already telling me that this is gonna be primarily sweet, with tartness as a mere afterthought.

The aroma does have a nice dry oak character that's persistent throughout the profile. Overall, this beer reminds me of the Lindeman's Kriek lambic, only with slightly less funk and perhaps a little more oak. Believable, since the Lindeman's Kriek has barely any oak, and this beer has barely any funk. The residual sweetness is common to both of the cherry brews.

As expected, the flavor is popping with sweet cherries (a little inuendo for you pervs out there), although I'm surprised to find that there's also a nice vinous meter that I wasn't picking up on in the aroma. Some heavy oak, musky dryness, and a touch of astringent grape skins. I still don't get any real tartness, also some may confuse the lightly astringent tannin as a pseudo-tartness.

Sweet it is, though, full of syrupy cherry and overly sweet cherry juice - think something along the lines of the cherry-flavored syrupy used for snow-cones and Slurpees. There's a finishing touch of dying cherries and very faint oaky vanilla. I would have liked some more sustainability from the oak, but nothing can stand up to the intensity of those cherries. Thin-medium bodied, almost creamy with middle of the road carbonation.

Not a bad brew, per se, but really not what most people will be looking for. You probably expect a highly oaky, dry, and tart beer with sour cherries and tons of vinous grape. Not exactly the case here. This is more of a sweet, cherry fruit beer. In that regard, it can be enjoyed more thoroughly. Looking at it that way, I much prefer this to, say, Founder's Cerise. As far as Oud Bruins go, though, it's not as hot. Still a decent thing to try for the cherry lovers out there.
