A: Hazy and caramel colored with well-retained foamy head, looks like a dark unfiltered cider (3/3)
S: Pretty strong banana and alcohol smell, reminiscent of strawberry-banana yogurt (10/12)
T: Sweet malt flavor balanced by very strong alcohol--an indistinguishable tang at the end of the sip (15/20)
M: Well-carbonated with dry finish (5/5)
O: 12% alcohol, you say? Yeah, you can tell. But honestly there’s a lot of dryness and malt character to balance it out. Would I drink this every day? No. But if someone asks me to recommend an eisbock, this’ll be #1 on my list. (7/10)

Poured from a 500ml bottle, 2013 vintage.

Pours a light murky brown. Flavor is rich without being too sweet. Figs and dates are prominent. Went really well with the pepper steaks i had.

One hell of an interesting beer. I keep buying it and I'm surprised at how delicious it is every time! I've never tasted another craft like it. Sweet chocolate and raisins with a spicy finish. If you like Belgian Darks, get your hands on a bottle of this. Pour, partake, and drink like a Sir. Enjoy!

A: hazy brown with a quickly-dissipating head.
S: banana, clove, fig, bready malt, molasses, candied sugar, alcohol.
T: alcohol is noticeable, but not in a bad way. Taste follows the nose. Most distinguishable for me are: spiced rum, dark fruit, molasses, fig, clove.
M: I was surprised by the somewhat-creamy mouthfeel. The carbonation is high as well.
O: I am excited to try this beer when the weather turns cold. Still a nice change of pace for the summer, and a very drinkable brew despite its high abv.

A - Pours a murky opaque blackish brown with a three-finger rocky head. - 2.5

S - Very malty with an enhanced wheat beer aroma, spicy, dark fruit, maybe even some faint clove, alcohol clearly evident (even a bit cough syrupy) - 4.25

T - Very malty. faintly sweet, the 12% ABV peeks through some. - 3.75

MF - Warming, medium-heavy body with some creaminess. - 4.0

O - A bit too hot for me but a tasty malt bomb. 3.75

A: murky brown and opaque - I dropped it centrally into a snifter and got a massive dense head of foam that took some time to slim down into a filmy tan cap; brief motes of lace trailed behind

S: boozy fruits, like dates, plums and figs; overripe banana and thick dense bread

T: banana and ripe dark fruit, booze and spice, particularly clove; some distant dark cherry and maybe a little wet cocoa powder

M: full-bodied and fuzzy soft/smooth; peppery spikes of spice and alcohol tingle a bit at first, but are then suffused by the creamy malts

O: clearly a top-of-the-line ale, although you need to want that sweet, fruity, boozy drinking experience. My first eisbock, I liken it to a quad or a wheatwine - rich and deep, totally enjoyable, but not something I'd reach for casually.

Appearance: Pours with half a finger of soft white head. The color is dark brown with some lighter touches around the edges. Active carbonation is very light.

Smell: Bright cloves and bananas explode out of the bottle. Dark fruits with accents of plums, papaya, cedar, and tobacco work their way on to the scene after the front. There is a sting of booze on the back end that really pulls your attention, but not in a negative way.

Taste: Spices and booze hit on the front. Dark fruits, bananas, and cloves warm up on the body. That warming heat lingers throughout the body and into the finish. Earth and tobacco go well with the booze on the back end. Exotic spices round this one out.

Mouthfeel: I kind of love the tongue numbing booze this one brings. Lots of fruits and spices play a great compliment as well.

Overall: My first Eisbock and this was a treat. Reminded me of a big boozy quad. Glad I got a classic of the style to establish a benchmark.

A: Dark maple syrup brown, cloudy, a finger of light beige head, opaque so can’t see any carbonation.

S: Very weizen like, dark fruits like dates and figs, ripe bananas, floral, black pepper, ripe banana peels, a slight fermented fruit.

T: Big weizen flavours, dark fruit, dates and figs, ripe bananas, tannic, sweet, big alcohol flavours, little bitterness. Brown sugar.

M: Thick, weighty syrupy body, medium high fine bubbled carbonation.

O: My first in this style. A strong beer that’s well done and a sipper, but very drinkable. Complex good flavours, reminiscent of a weizen.

Getting around to reviewing what many would call a classic. It has been several years since I have had this brew.

A- Poured to my tulip glass with a dark red-brown body that hardly allows light to pierce it. A silky, creamy thick head rises up to one finger with impressive retention at such high ABV. Lacing is only spotty for me but the ring that remains on the beer is thick and creamy.

S- Concentrated German yeast jumps out of the glass with a nice malty sweetness behind it. Whopping aromas of banana, clove, dark sugars, dates, figs, raisin, malt syrup and caramel.

T- Follows closely to the nose with a semi-sweet, intense malt and yeast driven flavor. Malts bring a sweet, but not cloying, flavor with notes of toast, light cocoa, caramel and brown sugar. Surplus of fruit esters and yeasty notes of plums, soy, dates, spices, banana, clove and alcohol.

MF- Thick bodied with a texture that is creamy, syrupy and oily. Somehow the carbonation is on the very high, foamy end but falls onto the palate as smooth as I have found in any beer. Finishes with an appropriate alcohol warmth.

A huge beer that drinks big but has some important key characteristics. The mouthfeel is so extremely smooth and creamy that it could probably support a 20% AVB, unreal MF in this one. There is nothing harsh in the beer or overdone, it finds a nice balance of sweetness, alcohol and huge flavors.

Just for info: there's a new label style that leaves out the word 'weizen'.

This beer is super intense. It pours a murky brown colour with very little head. Not all that appetizing. However, the smell is really pleasant, completely overloaded with spices. The first whiff really hits you. The alcohol is definitely present in the taste, but not nearly as much as yo might expect from a 12% beer. Incredibly smooth mouthfeel. Not a session beer, but good for once in a while!

Appearance: This beer poured a deep amber to brown color. It poured with a decent creamy tan head.

Smell: This beer has a very strong aroma of dried fruit, bready malt, sweet tropical fruit, and alcohol. It has a very sweet smell.

Taste: The taste is very similar to the smell. It is rich with a creamy mouthfeel. The carbonation is low and the finish is dry. Flavors of dried fruit and sweet malt are strong and there is a slight tartness. The mouthfeel is medium to heavy.

Overall: This beer is very good for its style. It is not my favorite style, but it is wonderful with grilled pork and chocolate.

Bottle dated early 2014 (original rating 4.25, review 4/2015):
Pours hazy brown, maybe a hint of redness. Head didn't build too high on a light pour, but does return with light agitation. Nose is candied dark fruit, with a plum tartness.

Taste starts with a root beer like cola taste. Feel adds a bit to this, light tingling carbonation. Figs, light roasted notes, toffee, general sweet root flavors. Very enjoyable beer, dark lightly-sweet beer.

Bottle dated 11/12/13. Poured into a snifter at 45F.
A - Pours a cloudy light brown color. The single finger of off-white head dissipated quickly, leaving a long lasting lacing that was resupplied by a stream of small bubbles from the bottom of the glass.
S - Strong ester smell with banana, pineapple and bread as the primary components.
T - Fairly dry with a taste that matches the smell. Banana in the foreground with malty sweetness in the middle and a crisp apple/pineapple finish.
M - Moderate mouthfeel with moderate carbonation.
O - My first eisbock. More fruity than the American double bocks I have tried. A good summer beer, even with the 12% abv. Highly recommended for those who like eatery Belgian beers.

A: The pour is a dark caramel color with plenty of hazy reddish highlights. A tall creamy off-white head sits on top. S: The smell is clove, banana and raisin and yeast. T: This beer is very sweet. The noble hops are fighting a losing battle here. The finish struggles towards dryness, thankfully, otherwise this beer would be too sweet except for sipping or drinking with food. M: The body is in line with the flavor: medium to heavy. Texture is creamy and lingers just a little on the palate. Carbonation is adequate for the heavy sweetness. D: This beer was good, and I think it probably has come to define the style. Therefore, it would be hard to rate it low. It is not really my favorite style due to the intense sweetness, but it does manage to bring together two very different styles: hefeweizen and doppelbock. I guess there is some value in that.

Poured into a Blind Tiger Brewery snifter. Served slightly chilled. Bottle number: "2012 09502".

A: Pours about a finger of thin white head which quickly dissipates to a thick cap and ring. Lots of carbonation which slowly built itself back up after the pour. Body is a clear burgundy.

S: Interesting nose. Strong port wine, salted meat (??), and sweet malts. Some warm booze does appear.

T: Strong port and sherry notes. Quite hot with sticky sweet malts. Some brown sugar and cherries. Almost like a huge aged barleywine.

M: Very creamy, smooth mouthfeel. Low carbonation with a medium/full feel. Quite hot though. You definitely feel the abv on this guy.

O: A big, sweet, malty, and strong beer. As mentioned, like a big aged barleywine with no hops left. What was most appealing to me was the persistent head and creamy mouthfeel. Too sweet and hot overall though. Still, I can see holding back a few of these for an extra cold night.

Appearance: Opaque brown color, short tan head, leaves no lacing

Smell: Dark fruits are heavy on the nose, cherries, plums, raisins

Taste: Mostly dark fruits, again cherries, plums, and raisins. There's some hints of wheat, banana, and clove. There's a little bit bread in there as well

Mouthfeel: Full body, low carbonation

Overall: Fantastic brew, you only have hints of its potency. I wasn't quite expecting it to be like this, but I'm glad I picked it up.

Had in Munich in a Weiss Haus...literally a perfect beer, if you like that sort of thing. Very dark, far mire so than the doppelbocks, and stronger than the many "ators" available (Celebrator, Optimator, Triumphator, etc.) due to extremely cold fermentation, I was told. Sweet but still distinctly German, unlike the wine-like sweet geueze of France or the barleywine old brown ale of England. Powerful, so beware.

Appearance: Pours an opaque brown. Nice head pour. Small viscous ring.
Aroma: Deep dark fruit flavors, dark cherries grapes figs and prunes. Bananas as well. All in all a nicely sweetly smell. Only a hint of alcohol.
Taste: As the beer warms there is certainly more banana flavor but the other sweet fruit are certainly present.
Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel is so smooth. A touch medicinal.

Serving type - 12oz bottle poured into a pilsner glass.

Appearance - Pours a perfect bronze with a small amount of cloudiness scudding around the glass.

Smell - One of the few beers I can distinctly smell that does not derive its' aroma solely from hops. Bouquet of shasta grape soda.

Taste - Despite the 12% abv, no alcohol is detectable on the palate. Tastes is sweet tangy fruit almost like like a toned down jolly rancher taste. Really like no beer I've tasted. While I've had my share of dopple bocks, and some of the thick sweetness of this eisbock reminds me of Spaten Dopplebock, it is truely unique. That being said, this is the first eisbock I have experienced. In short, it is a delicious beer.

Mouthfeel - In my opinion one of the highest traits of this beer. Slightest bite of carbonation on the tongue, leaving a stimulating tingle reminiscent of sensation of Irish Spring eucalyptus body wash on the skin. Beer is just a bit less thick than an average stout however thousands of tiny bubbles can be felt massaging the tongue and palate giving the drinker pause to savor and enjoy before downing this beast of a beer.

Overall - Delicious beer - excellent mouthfeel, taste unlike anything experience before. Worth $4.50 a bottle.

Appearance- Pours up about a finger's worth of head which has pretty good retention. The head is a light, creamy beige while the body is a dull maroon to chestnut brown that appears as a rosy, dark amber in the light. A few spots of lacing here and there.

Nose- Starts off with nice fruity esters that range from dark fruits of raisin and cherry to light notes of apple. Reminds me of some tripels and even has a slight banana note. However, there is enough maltiness to avoid an exact comparison. Some brown bread and very light notes of molasses and brown sugar. Some candied fruit as well. Nice fleshiness that ranges from the aforesaid apple and cherry to prunes and plums. Swirling reveals some oranges.

Taste- Very representative of the nose (especially the fruit notes) but sweeter and tarter. Raisins and brown sugar blend nicely as they move into molasses and brown bread, only to be walloped by a considerable amount of heat. The age on this (I'm guessing it's close to 2 years old) has not mellowed it and may have even resulted in a boozier beer. I wasn't worried about this having some age on it as it is 12% but I will have to seek out a fresher example for comparison. Some cinnamon gives the brown sugar and molasses a little bit of a bite which works well with the conspicuous presence of alcohol. Almost astringent. Definitely a sipper. A little boozy for me but I can see why this is so highly rated. Big notes of banana and even bigger notes of clove which add bitterness and ash to the flavor profile. Between good and really good. Some citrus notes appear. A touch of honey. Alcohol mellows a bit as it opens up.

Mouthfeel- Medium bodied with lots of syrup to the texture. Light carbonation and perhaps a light carbonic zing but it's hard to tell because of the bite of the spices and alcohol.

Drinkability- A little abrasive and a little astringent but what do you expect with this much alcohol. Still enjoyable but definitely a sipper. I will have to purchase this again to get a sense of what a fresh bottle is like.

Overall- Good to really good. A truthful representation of the style but some aspects of the flavor profile don't work for me. Too much clove is more of a problem than the booze. Still, a must try.

Poured from an 11.2 oz bottle into a pub glass.
Appearance - a deep, dark brown, nice carbonation bubbles build a fluffy beige head. There is a ton of floating sediment! Lacing is excellent...glad I chose a pub glass for this session, because this beer looks amazing!
Smell - mango, pineapple, raisins, stone fruit, Hawaiian rolls, faint banana and cloves! Let the bottle sit for a while and take a whiff...smells like a blend of banana bread and bourbon!
Taste - dark fruit, spices, sweet and doughy malts, and sweet alcohol that is so smooth!
Feel - complex and flavorful, creamy and medium body, smooth alcohol!
Overall - big, tasty brew that doesn't disappoint!

The look of this beer is good, but it doesn't foretell its greatness. It's a deep, shining ruby-infused violet-brown with a tight, frothy cap of lightly tanned head reaching one finger. It shows very good retention and leaves good deposits of patching connected with thin webbing pretty far down the glass.
The smell offers the goodness of the Belgian yeast in good measure, not overdone, with the wheat backbone and a surprisingly unpunishing alcohol presence tingling the nostrils. The yeast brings all the banana, clove, gently musty earth and soft phenols I expect. It could be a little stronger, though it's still very nicely presented, and everything is in good measure.
Malts are an absolute beast on the tongue. Sweetness is the main component, but it's so deep, complex, well-integrated, balanced, and evened out by the other aspects that it just works phenomenally well without cloying at all. The flavor is also massively smooth and rich, decadent without being heavy. Earth, clove and soft spices, caramel and toffee come off a wheat backbone that adds a dry, crackery balance. There's also a bit of chocolate, and dark fruits are mostly sweet with a very nice almost overripe quality. There's some banana, of course, and in the middle the alcohol with the sweetness and fruits makes for a dark rum taste. A touch of hops adds the perfect balance, a hint of leaf both green and almost tobacco-like. As it begins to drink a little like a wine, the alcohol and huge complexity of flavors, along with the sweetness, make this beer very much like a port (one of my favorites).
Do yourself a favor and let this warm. It begins with a strongly prickling carbonation that, when it eases off, levels out into just about the smoothest drinking experience I've ever had. Crispness still adds liveliness but is perfectly even, but the richness, robustness and absolute silky smoothness of this beer is impressive. That the alcohol doesn't add massive heat, it's not overly cloying, and it doesn't display any one of dozens of flaws a beer like this could is testimony of brewing genius.

A: Cloudy, medium brown (like muddy water), with a hint of purple. Head is 2 fingers of khaki-colored foam, with good retention, but not much lacing.

S: Strong, fruity esters are the first thing I smell, with grape, banana, and apple dominating. As expected with the style, there's pepper and allspice. There's also malted grain, and a hint of urea (which is not as bad as it sounds, as it is faint).

T: Sweet, in a cloying way. Fruity notes include raisins and over-ripe banana. Cloves and other spices warm the tongue. I detect rum flavors as well. Buttery diacetyl smoothes out things late. Hops? Not so much; the finish is more sweet and fruity than bitter.

M: Smooth and creamy, with nice carbonation. The alcohol is overpowered by the other flavors at first, but the longer I drink it, the more boozy it becomes.

O: The "eis" (ice) part of Eisbock definitely adds potency to an already flavorful brew by concentrating the flavors and ethanol. A special occasion brew, to be consumed without food -- and with a friend -- to maximize the experience. This is really good!

11.2oz bottle poured into tulip.

A: Pours a very deep reddish-brown with a fizzy head that dissipates immediately.

S: Very sweet. Dark fruit, caramel, and booze.

T: Much like the smell. Extremely sweet and slightly tart up front, dark fruit, caramel, molasses, and a big boozieness. Way too sweet for me.

M: Medium body with high carbonation. The alcohol has a warming effect and provides a decent burn.

O: Being a fan of the original Aventinus, I thought I would find this more appealing. This is the first example of the 'Eisbock' style I've tried, so I don't have any direct comparisons. I can say that I much prefer the regular Aventinus and this one was just too sweet and boozy for my tastes.
