This is my first Eisbock. Looking forward to it- the only thing I know about Eisbocks are from the BJCP guidelines. Its Christmas Eve, the kids are in bed, the wife is wrapping gifts, so I think this is a great time to review this beer!

The appearance is a somewhat opaque/translucent dark brown with an off-white head that is gathering at the sides of the pour. Almost stout or porter like until you hold it up to the light. Smells of dried dark fruits like raisins or plums, very malty and slight alcohol. Tastes sweet, dried fruits, toasted malt, some alcohol evident, and a dry crisp finish. This is an intense beer with many developed flavors, and I find it interesting that hop flavors are not one of them. This may be the antithesis of an American Barleywine. Mouthfeel is full, and low carbonation. This one is a sipper, and is developing more of a flavor profile as it warms.

From what I understand, this is a difficult and time consuming beer to make. First it must be brewed to a higher strength, then frozen to concentrate, then lagered for a long period of time. This one is a nice alternative to other high strength, highly hopped ales like American Barleywines, Russian Imperial Stouts and Imperial IPAs. Highly recommeded-just to expand the palate perspective! Merry Christmas!

500mL poured into a champagne flute at 7C tasted at 9-12C.

Dark earthy rich cocoa nibs-chestnut-mahogany brown, a light reddish clay hues with a thick and stable sea foam head that is spotty but generally dense 7cm head that remains indefinitely. Mostly clear with a little bit of hazing, but high density gives a more obstructed appearance. Sporadic but ample carbonation. Very nice but with little lacing that I would have otherwise expected.

Nose of alcohol, coming in at 12% this is not surprise, but it doesn't come across as gasoline or as evaporation of the excess. Warm caramel and dried, juicy fruits: plum and raisin. Balancing spices of all spice, old nutmeg (but not the zest of mace) and clove. Elevated bright notes that flow generously like a cool spring breeze in a citrus orchard.

Dark cooked and dried fruits: plums, figs and apricots. Creamy malt flows just over a light residual sugars and smooth chocolaty roast nuts. Dark bready yeasts lends to the satisfying body that holds up the fruit. The more i look the more the perfect blending melds flavours my palate is just unable to accurately distinguish. Impeccable for the style for what I have previously tasted.

Mouth feel is smooth and generously light while creamy and rich. Lots of sugars and a little fat on the finish. Luxury.

Just great. Way too drinkable for a 12% ABV. Smooth, robust and as easy or complex as you could want it to be. I would have liked to seen a little more layering on the nose and a lot more lacing. The 5 on taste is more like a 4.8-4.9 for style for sure, but was just a little to condensed for my palate and for personal taste is a tad generous (more like 4.5), but amazing; likewise the nose but layered complexity on the nose is more important to my "unbiased" rating than is layering in the flavour profile. So the nose is more like 4.25 but worth the round up.

God damned great fucking beer!

Even when poured carefully, this beer is a brown, muddy, murky abortion. I am oddly attracted to it though.

Smell is boozy and like the yeast profile in many dark Belgian styles. Pungent yet inviting.

Taste is super complex, lots going on here. Grape, dark fruit, esters. Earthy, boozy, sweet. Awesome.

Mouthfeel is incredibly light and hefeweizen-y for a 12% beer. a little sticky but still dangerously quaffable.

Really phenomenal brew here. Trying this beer should be mandatory for a BA account.

500ml bottle. Very nice to see this offering in Alberta, when the others from this brewery have been available here for so long.

This beer pours a very hazy, dark burnt amber hue, with a teeming tower of tight foamy, rather creamy ecru head, which takes it rather easy in coming down to earth, eventually leaving some walk of shame, ripped nylon lace around the glass.

It smells of rich, dark, fleshy orchard fruit, some additional mushy banana, caramel/toffee malt, a mildly astringent/sweet wheat dichotomy, a bit of aged demarara rum, and earthy, somewhat musty hops. The taste is a sweet, sugary wheat/barley combo from the outset, followed closely by banana pudding, soft spices - barely evoking clove, perhaps only in my head - dark sugar, somehow differentiated molasses, a mild oily nuttiness, some port-like alcohol heat, and drying, earthy hops flying well under the radar.

The carbonation is tame and equally frothy for the most part, with little to apologize for, the body a stout, sturdy medium weight, and a bit syrupy in its otherwise impeccable smoothness. It finishes still sweet - fruity, malty, and boozy - all well tempered in their sexy restraint.

Wow - what an experience - so many input components that I was unfairly waiting for at least one of them to go off the rails, but, nope - mea culpa - everything is oh so very well balanced and integrated. A hallmark for this uncommonly available style, which given its inherent nature, needs finesse and subtly in order to be even remotely drinkable. This has both, and more, in spades, so grab one if you can.
