11.2 oz 2009 bottle poured into a snifter

Dark chestnut brown, slight ruby tint, cloudy from the yeast, frothy tan head that quickly fades to a thick tan ring of bubbles. Not much lacing, but not much expected. Aroma smells like weizenbock, with a pinch of alcohol. Strong notes of yeast, banana, clove, strong dark fruit, and caramel. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, chewy and fluffy, high carbonation. Flavor is dominated by sweet caramel, and banana and clove weizen notes. Every taste is a combination of new flavors, honey, rum, chocolate, dark fruit, bread, other spices, etc. Alcohol is also well hidden in the taste, but still provides a strong warming presence. Finish is very soft and smooth, not as sweet as in the beginning of the drink, but still a rich combination of flavors. A nice sipper/night cap, extremely sweet and boozy, to some this might barely resemble a "beer"

Pours a dark translucent brown with a thin head and little lacing. The aromas are of banana, clove, and toffee. The taste is complex and quite nice if a little bit on the sweet side. More clove, cinammon, baked apples, bananas, and a long sweet malty finish with lots of clove on the finish as well. Quite spritzy in the mouth, medium bodied. Not really cloying even though its a somewhat sweet beer. Surprisingly drinkable given the alcohol which is well hidden. A nice after dinner sipper.

Hazy amber/brown, with beige notes. Big head, goes away fast, big retention.
Smells of perfect banana and clove, flowers, wheat, yeasty bread dough.
Really complex fruitiness, with really sweet cherries (with a hint of sourness also), red berries, pulms, figs, all of this dark fruit having a very jam-like sweetness. Sweet banana chips also, light acidic red apple, red grapes. Big vineous character, like a sweet red wine. Honey notes, and spices are big vanilla, big clove and some nice prickly pepper. Sweet wheaty malts, caramel, reminding of sweet cake, going to gingerbread. Even if itțs really sweet, it's not unpleasant, complementing the warm alcohol (surprisingly not boozy, considering it's 12%). Herbal notes felt towards the hoppy finish, with a decent bitterness.
Somewhat creamy, low carbonation, perfect as a sipper.
A real delicacy, not one to pass up. Can't wait to get my hands on an old vintage. Top-tier brew.

Picked up a bottle of their reserve/anniversary series. This one was brewed in 2006, released for 2013. Poured in a weisse vase, the beer is a deep, dark, chestnut-highlighted brown coloring with a slight haze, no head, and a collection of carbonation bubbles settling onto the surface that you are unable to see throughout the body. Looks solid. Aromas of date and fig all over the forward nose, with a solid richness throughout. Earthy tones, with cherry highlights and a boozy kick. Flavors of roast and old world fruit sweetness on the forward tongue, with a blending of date and fig forming a solid backbone, along with some rich, roasted caramel notes. Earthy tones round everything out, and there is a definite kick of booze throughout the beer. The ABV also has a wine-like character to it. Smooth, robust body that the carbonation lightens, but you still get to enjoy chewing on. Wow! Richly sweet, earthy aftertaste with a building warmth as you go. The finish is robust, smooth, and leaves a cloying layer of caramel and fruit sweetness. Holy hell, this beer is tasty, big, and apparently ages amazingly well.

Bottle from the LCBO as part of the winter release, 500ml bottle into an oversized wine snifter.

Pours a murky and dense rusty brown, with some sediment eveident here. Finger or two of eggshell head, OK retention. Nose is big: strong raisin, caramel, loads of butterscotch and fusel alcohol (almost resembling vodka at times, yowza!). I can sense the heat coming. Tastes of dark fruits, plums, raisin, thick and massive caramel and butterscotch notes again. Dark fruits take a real backseat to the butterscotch as I move through this. Medium high carbonation, large and filling mouthfeel almost. Great body. This was a sipper for real, heat was really here.

Serving type: bottle.

Pours a dar, clougy brown with very small beige head. Aroma of wheat, chocolate, plum, raisin and alcohol. Stronger fruit and alcohol taste than regular Aventinus. Tastes of raisin, plum and blackberry. Nice warm alcohol presence.

Pours a cloudy chocolate milkshake brown with some yeast floaters.

Smell is intense vanilla banana and cloves with an intense malt scent. Like Aventinus only concentrated more. Seriously spicy.

Taste is sweet and very intense; alcohol level leaves an unmistakable heat in the mouth. Pretty much concentrated Aventinus. Lots of vanilla and banana and cloves flavor.

Mouthfeel is almost chewable.

Incredibly drinkable and intense. Only the cost and rarity prevent me from having this as often as I like.

A big thanks to Joey from Southbay for my first Eisbock.

A: Deep reddish brown with a 2 finger head that
dissipates almost immediately. Despite the careful pour, there is quite a bit of sediment floating in the glass that is beginning to settle at the bottom. A plethora of tiny bubbles continuously travel heavenward toward the head deceased.
S: I'm pleasantly surprised by a spicy aroma. Malt, alcohol, banana (!), a hint of coriander.
T: The taste is fruity, bready and alcoholic. A great deal of malt sweetness with a decently long biscuity alcoholic aftertaste.
M: Great carbonation and a smooth, full, mouthfeel.
D: The drinkability is scary. It would be easy to drink a few of these before the alcohol kicks in. This beer was thoroughly enjoyable.

Pours a quite cloudy deep mahogany brown, possibly not as opaque as it could have been. The sediment was quite compact in the bottom and despite swirling the last couple of centimetres of beer, much of it would not be moved. Head is a filmy crown of yellowish-beige bubbles. Good static lacing, and the body looks pleasantly heavy. Lovely looking beer.

Nose is lovely and redolent with big dark wheat characters, but it's so lovely and deep and rich, refined and complex. Slight subtle hints of booze and smoke, and the roasted characters are very pleasant. The boozy sweetness even gives off unusual aromas of port. It's a truly excellent nose.

Taste is big and slightly boozy, although perhaps not as immediately hot and spiritous as I thought it might be. Round wheat notes are noticeable, but there's a welling of slightly metallic, medicinal characters on the back, which while not having the strong heat of booze, do give the bite of continental schnapps. Cherries and appleskin are hinted at. Feel is smooth at the start, but has a pleasant acidity coming through to mingle with the light astringency of the booze.

This is a lovely beer. It's surprising just how gentle it is for all its extremity. It really stays true to its weizen roots, which give it a lovely roundness, and temper the big and boozy notes that appear throughout.

Cedar wood with grains of orange and tawny that together resemble something like a very dark rum. It's a plethora of colours with lots of flashy accenting despite a thick and densely smoggy body. Surprising, given the natural cloudiness you would think it's unlikely so much highlighting would be possible. Less surprising is the leanness of its head which, despite a stable contribution of bubbles, struggles to support itself amongst the over 12% alcohol.

For a German beer it smells an awful lot like the tropics - an intensely effervescent yeast perspires notes of dark and tropic fruit. In particular, the beer is oozing - I mean absolutely sweltering - with over-ripened bananas. There's also a ton of prunes, raisins, grapes and apricots. A big dousing of spice and traces of vanilla and cocoa beans are noted as well. The strength of both phenols and esters is staggering and extravagant.

The yeast continues to work wonders in the taste as well. Spicy clove like phenols make a zesty, peppery perfumed addition. The esters contribute tangy, fruity notes and impart the taste of juicy orange, dried plums, and lemon zest. There's a sweet hint of bubblegum. The amount of suggested flavours is near limitless. I usually hail Belgian yeasts for their well cultured persona but apparently German strains deserve a little love as well.

The mouthfeel is truly artful: it's an ultra-creamy sensation with substantial alcohol warming. The beer is dark but void of roast. The gentle profile of tart fruit and spice is surprisingly full in character. The texture is fluffy and creamy and the beer drinks curiously light for something of 12% (of course the alcohol will hit your head even if not your palate). Be forewarned: the Aventinus Weizen-Eisbock is dangerously quaffable for its strength!

This doesn't have the toasty bread, sweet malt and rich dark caramel qualities of a normal eisbock. It does, however, share the fluffy, creamy fullness and dark, spicy, fruity, (nearly refreshing) character of dunkelweizen - and that makes for a dangerous drinkability. This is presented as the original eisbock and while I can't confirm that, I can say that it is still one of the finest examples of the style (wheat based or not) that I've yet to try.

Sampled at Max's from a wooden, gravity fed keg sitting on the bar.

The beer pours a slightly hazy darkish brown color with OK head retention and lacing. The nose on this beer was just wild, with considerable clove, bannana, sweet fruit and even a slight sour element. This has to be one of the more complex smelling beers I've ever come across. Flavors for the most part replicate the nose, with considerable richness and sweetness. This beer is very intensely flavored, and the mouthfeel is very full and rich indeed. Drinkability is OK, but the alcohol is pretty noticeable, and reminds you to take it easy and don't overdo it.

Impressive. While similar to the draft version, I just think there is all that much more going on in the cask version, especially the aroma profile. This is a good beer, but was an absolute treat to try from the gravity fed keg.

4/10/10 edit. So lucky to be here at Max's for their last gravity fed keg of this nectar. This particular keg is very fresh, and the head retention is spectacular. It's a creamy, milky looking head, looking more akin to the foam on a latte. Lacing is likewise very nice... considering this was gravity fed, I was greatly impressed by this beer's appearance. Always an excellent beer, out of gravity feed keg it's nearly mindblowing.

A - Poured into a Aventinus glass a dark brown color, not much carbonation, no head, not much lacing really, some small bits of yeast were detected.

S - Scents of plums, sweet malts, and caramel.

T - The taste is sweet and alcoholic in nature. There's a nice little warming effect after sipping.

M - Medium body, no carbonation.

D - Drinkable. Another excellent brew from this brewery.

Pours a two-fingered light tan head that fades quickly to a ring leaving traces of lace. Cloudy brown/amber color, ton of yeast left in bottle. Good carbonation and medium bodied. Malty dark fruit nose. Flavor is sweet raisins and alcohol, a very unusual eisbock. $5.10 for a 330ml bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma.

A- Big creamy head that has large bubbles and a nice light brown color. The carbonation is really strong stirring up yeast bits from the bottom. The body is a thick dark brown that doesn't let light pass through it.

S- A very rich malt aroma with a strong prune earthiness

T- A wonderful, powerful wheat flavor that builds to a nice wheat tanginess with a faint vanilla banana taste and a very nice warming in the finish.

M- medium-full mouthfeel with a nice warm alcohol finish.

D- Very nice big wheat beer that has a big alcohol warmth to support it. It also has a nice maltyness to support the wheat and the alcohol. Even without a hop presents this beer has a nice complexity and a wonderful taste.

I had this ale tonight, served om a bottle and Celebrator glass at the Old Stein Inn in Edgewater, MD.

Appearance: Deep auburn-orange color, this ale had a great deal of sediment when poured into the glass. The bottle poured with an acceptable amount of head.

Smell: Malts come up from the glass, establishing themselves as the predominant flavor and smell of the ale. The malts are not so strong though that they reek of sweetness.

Taste: Malts hit the taste buds immediately. They are slightly sweet, providing a nice counterbalance to the high abv. The sweetness of the malts gives way to a pleasant, even wheat taste after a few seconds.

Mouthfeel: The ale sits nicely in the mouth. The wheat character provides a bit of tanginess that mixes well with the sweetness of the malt.

Drinkability: The drinkability is limited by the 12% abv, but the ale is nicely balanced and the wheat adds a distinct taste.

2010 bottle, drank April 2011

A: Dark, black-tea with an off-white head.

S: Booze. Hammy smoke. Wheat. Black pepper, spicy ginger. Hint of banana. It’s more bock than hefe.

T: Strong booze note. Wheat. Touch of banana. Cinnamon, pepper. Big molasses-laden liquorish body. A light woody bitter note hangs around in the background.

M: Med/light body with a strong, warm alcohol character.

O: An interesting brew. The concentrated alcohol drowns out a lot of the softer hefe notes that I felt the standard Aventinus had done a fantastic job of retaining. That said, the alcohol accentuates a variety of new flavors; notably the molasses, liquorish and spice. I’m not sure if it’s worth the trade off though.

12 oz from the Coop for about $5... shared with Brenda, mine from a Kasteel tulip.

Not much head at all ... deep amber brew.

Aroma is all sweet bananas ... touch of pink bubblegum and cloves.

Deceptively smooth for a brew that has this much alcohol ... medium body and pretty explosive carbonation on the palate. Flavor is bananas and the expected bubblegum. Some caramel mid palate. Lingering spicy banana esters.. actually pretty good.

Probably only the 4-5th time I've had this over the years; typically I am not a fan of German wheats, but lately, I've been trying to expand my horizons, and this is the beer to do it with... Awesome and would cellar like a champ.

A- initial three inches of head recedes after a few minutes. Murky brown color. Some yeast sediment as a result of pouring like an asshole. No lacing, lower end of the spectrum as far as head retention but that's understandable

S- boozy, dark fruits.

T- woooo! Eye opening booziness, in a good way! Hah. Not quite ripe cherries. Love the aftertaste.

M- heavy, syrup-like mouthfeel but good carbonation.

D/O- Split this with my main squeeze fdkayti, proved to be a good amount for each of us. Would recommend and definitely have again!

Poured into a Celebrator pokal. Pours a dark mahogany brown with a thin, light khaki head that dissipates to patches, leaving slight lacing. Aroma of dark malt, molasses, dates and figs, hints of fresh dark stone fruit. Flavor follows, dominated by sweet malt and dried dark fruit, mild hints of molasses around the edges. Lightly warming. Medium bodied with light creaminess. This was one of my first introductions to high ABV ales and I remember how it changed my perception of what beer could be. This has a the rich malty flavor expected from bocks with additonal great fruit elements. Warming, but the ABV is well covered. One of the world's great beer styles and examples. Glad to try this again. Excellent

This bottle was shared with zep9865 during our mini tasting before DLD. This beer pours a murky raisin brown with a beige head that laces the glass. I've had this one before but never reviewed it. This smells super, and syrupy sweet. It wreaks of sweet dark malts, raisins, figs, and light yeast. The nose is even a little sweet for me. This beer is very yeasty and very heavy on the raisins. Wow is it sweet. It's hard to even rate to style when a beer is this sweet. It's borderline cloying. It drinks medium in body but the sweetness prevails above all other aspects. Does this beer taste good? Yes, but in small quantities. The alcohol content doesn't even matter to me because this is super malty (and understandably so) and super fruity. I just can't get past the sweetness. It's a nice style to try but this beer specifically just isn't for me.

A - Deep amber brown body with a nice bubbly offwhite head.

S - Alot of wheat and lightly roasted grains in the nose. Sweet alcohol wafting around in the form of brandy or rum with bananas. A touch of malt and dry fruit.

T - Tastes of brandy soaked fruit and alcohol warmth. Malty notes mingling with wheat toast. SLight dark sugar mixes with the wheat twang and finishes with an evaporating warmth.

M - A solid medium body with a nice hot bite. Warming and drying the mouth as the beer goes down. This one is actually very tolerable within its high abv. The alcohol isnt masked but blended nicely.

O - An excellent eisbock, with a nice complexity and harmony of flavors and body.

Enjoyed at Capital Ale House - Innsbrook, Glen Allen, VA

Tan 1/2" head over a dark brown brew, and laced admirably. Deep grainy aroma, with alcohol character apparent. Flavor indicates a chewy wheat brew with hearty consistancy. Mouthfeel and drinkability excellent for the style.

Poured from 330mL bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: dark, murky brown with a thin finger of tan foam. It definitely looks like it means business.

Smell: rich, fruity, chalky aroma. Fruits are sweet and dark, but fresh: plums, pears, cherries. They are bound together in a chalky medium that I find quite compelling. Alcohol is surprisingly sparse here. Superb.

Taste: very similar to the aroma. Some deeper flavors appear as well, such as raisins and prunes. Alcohol warmth becomes present, but it doesn't interfere with the smooth and complex yet somewhat light flavors. Delicious.

Mouthfeel: silky smooth, heavy body with a nice level of carbonation that makes this creamy and smooth. Really pleasing.

Drinkability: extremely drinkable, especially considering its monstrous 12% ABV. I am really enjoying this one.

The bottle is long-necked 33 cl brown. The purple label got som silver writings. Looks neet and clean.

A: Murky brown with hits of red. Head is thick and creamy off-white and really large. It stays for a long time and leaves some lacings after dissipation.

S: Rich sweet malt with lots of dark dried fruits; cherries and plums. The wheat gives it a banana-smell. A bit flowery.

T: Sweet malt in great harmony with wheat. Dark dried fruits as well as banana. Very well balanced.

M: Full body and mild carbonation. A warm feeling from the alcohol (obviously). Aftertaste is long and sweet, well balanced.

D: This is a really great beer. I put some bottles in my cellar - I think it will be even better in a couple of years.

I had this bottle at the Weisses Brauhaus in Munich.

Mindestens haltbar bis 23.02.07.

A: Murky, dark chestnut. Off-white head, some retention and lace.

S: Alcohol (sherry), raisins, bread, slight spice.

T: Bread, alcohol (sherry), raisin, nut, spice. Sweetness is nicely balanced by the alcohol. Potent, but very well rounded. Truly exceptional.

M: Moderate to full body, moderate carbonation.

D: Very good, especially considering the strength.
