It's the art of brewing in its purest form for true wheat beer connoisseurs: "Original" – the traditional wheat beer brewed unaltered in accordance with the original recipe of Georg I. Schneider since 1872 – and since then simply marquee. Of a deep amber colour, harmonically balanced and strong. That's what Bavaria tastes like. And that's also what coming home tastes like - in the comfort of your own four walls as well as at your convivial "Stammtisch".

Hops: Hallertauer Tradition, Hallertauer Herkules.

Every year the Schneider Weisse Original Hefe-Weizenbier rings in awards for brewing excellence, heritage, beer craftsmanship, and just straight up great beer. Without a doubt the Schneider Weisse brewery is among the oldest and most preeminent modern breweries in the world. And there is good reason for it. Founded by George Schneider the First in 1872, G. Schneider & Sohn is a Bavarian brewery producing some of the worlds most delectable beers.

All of their beers are top fermented wheat beer, and two of them are bottle conditioned; the Aventinus, and their flagship, which is readily available now world wide, the Original Hefe Weizen-Bier. It was one of the first beers to introduce me into the world of wheat beers and remains a constant fixture in my fridge. The Schneider Weisse is so perfect for so many scenarios, and is so delicious that I always need to have one at the ready, just in case.

There are a lot of wheat beers available these days, however very few if any are able to capture the clean, fresh and sunshine flavors and aromas that the Schneider Weisse encompasses. Its balance, elegance, distinct and sensual characteristics along with a perfect mouthfeel make it a winning choice every time. Seriously, this beer is amazing.

The Schneider Weisse Original is available at most every LCBO location that has more than the commercial brands. It comes in a tall German style 500ml dark bottle with a white and platinum label bearing the original Schneider Weisse badge. This wheat beer is bottle conditioned, 5.4% abv, and simply beautiful. The bottle conditioning is amazingly apparent in this beer - it provides a busting effervescent yet smooth mouthfeel, and creates a hazy, and very artisan beer to behold.

It should be poured into a tall weissebier glass gently, allowing the foam to slowly roll into a generous and pillowy pure white head. Bubbles will pour up from the center of the glass with vigorous aggression until they meet the surface of the beer. Then, they will erupt into your senses. The beer itself is a golden amber mahogany with rich browns and tinted straw yellows beaming through it. Its slightly opaque and hazy, but surprisingly clear into the sun (but is definitely not transparent). It is really a magnificent sight outdoors in the sun.

The nose, well, its wonderful. One of the reason that this beer is so good is because it is so aromatic. Immediately you can pull spices and fresh fruit out of the beer. It brings cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon into the air gently following over fresh apples, over rip bananas, and light peach. It has a light sweet yeast and character too building in the nose complimented by malts and fresh wheat - all very floral and delicate. The nose is exactly that, many beautiful flavors all harmoniously forming a beautiful bouquet of aromas.

Like most wheat beers the first impression from the taste is the effervescent and delicate mouthfeel. Although I have felt it so many times before in a huge array of different beers, the Schneider Weisse always brings its best game - the quality of the carbonation is so elegant and perfect; the bottle conditioning has treated this beer very well. This supremely refreshing mouthfeel also works perfectly with the spice that you can feel and taste in the beer every second it hits you.

The beer will wash fresh vanilla and gentle caramel malts with soft wheat and light spice across you whole palate. Pears, apples and bananas play in your cheeks and at the sides of your tongue while light, slightly citrus hops clean and refresh your whole mouth. Its not light and empty in body like you may expect a beer that feels like this to be - it is filled with aromatic flavors and has rich characteristics everywhere. Its hard to say that it is medium bodied because of how the bottle conditioning affects the mouthfeel, but really, there is a lot of flavor in this beer.

Go back for more and look for flavors of gentle bubble gum and notes of custard. There is a lot of flavor here and it rushes into every corner of your moth with excitement and zest. The finish is clean and refreshing with a quick and lightly sweet end that shows wheaty spice and still more vanilla. It is amazingly satisfying, and quenches with the best of them. Probably because it is the best of them.

This is all why it is so amazing. Somehow G. Schneider & Sohn is able to bring ripe flavors, fresh spices, and floral aromatic qualities to a beer while still uplifting a refreshing, crisp, tantalizingly delicate and amazingly unique beer. Its truly worth everyones time for at least a try, and if you are not convinced, well, I can't really even conceive that. Try the Schneider Weisse with smoked sausages, fish, wash rind cheeses, fruits, and on the beach.

From the bottle, it pours a hazy amber color with a nice off-white head that slowly reduces. The scent is bready with notes of banana and spice. The mouth follows with a smooth bready brew with notes of banana and spices.

Holy heck, this is one bangin' Hefe! I guess I shouldn't be too surprised as they also brew the Weizenbock that's possibly my favorite beer of the 1,072 I've tried thus far. There's a semi-sweet maltiness to this that just lets it shine on my tastebuds more so than even some of the best straight up wheats. Wowzers.

The beer is quite dark in color and is not very carbonated due to the bottle conditioning, I presume. It's a little different for a hefeweizen. The head doesn't stay for long so it doesn't look too attractive.

I thought it to be a little more acidic than other hefeweizens, but it has a healthy wheat palate.

All in all, the mouth feel is really hampered by undercarbonation, feels flat. But the hazy, unfiltered wheatiness is something I would come back to again.

500ml bottle

Pours hazy golden brown amber orange with a dense creamy lasting white foam head. Smells like toasty bready wheaty cereal grains, light caramel, apple, pear, banana, clove, pepper, apricot, citrus, with floral earthy herbal hops. Tastes like creamy wheat, caramel, honey, toasty bready malts, cereal grain, banana, sweet cinnamon clove spice, subtle apple, pear, white pepper, apricot, citrus, with floral earthy herbal hops. Feels crisp, dry and refreshing, medium bodied, creamy smooth with moderate carbonation. Overall a really great Hefeweizen.

This one packs a punch. Darker than expected. Heavy flavours of malty bread, cloves and a nutty feel. Dense but delicious!

Pours a deep amber color with a minimal head. The aroma is doughy and slightly sweet with hints of banana and clove. On the palate, the flavors of bready malt, fruity and spicy yeast esters, and subtle hoppy notes of citrus and apricot are balanced. The mouthfeel is soft and the carbonation is a little light. Overall, a solid choice for fans of the style.
