Notes/Commercial Description:
Schneider version. This brew is the result of the long friendship of Brooklyn brewmaster Garrett Oliver and Schneider brewmaster Hans-Peter Drexler. Garrett had always admired the delicate balance of flavors in Schneider Weisse, while Hans-Peter had long enjoyed the effusive hop character of Brooklyn East India Pale Ale and BLAST! Garrett's concept for the collaboration was that each brewmaster would brew essentially the same pale, hoppy weissbock in the other's brewery, but with different hopping to reflect the local hop flavor.

Dry-hopped w/ Hallertauer Saphir.

500ml bottle

A- Cloudy orange with a lot of carbonation going on. Off-white huge head that shows nice retention but suprisingly leaves very little lacing

S- Malt sweetness is barely detectable, with some typical weizen spicy notes of clove and phenols. The main role is played by a strong citric aroma that mainly reminds of grapefruit. Nice and strong aroma, though a bit too metallic and tang in my opinion

T- Some light malt hints of bread and caramel are there at the back of things, but hops are dominant. As the smell suggested, very much on the citric side, with lemon and grapefruit. Then some spicy notes of clove. Highly refreshing and decently complex but i'm getting that metallic feel in taste and aftertaste too

M- Has the typical refreshing feel of a Weizen, but it really hits you harsh on the palate, with very high carbonation and not much of a body underneath. Guess it would feel a really flat beer if not for carbonation

O- Drinkabilty is very good and the 8.2% ABV is perfectly hidden, but the beer does not seem to be able to stand on his own. You could either say this is a weizen that tastes like an IPA or an IPA that feels like a weizen: it just feels like you're tasting two different beers at the same time. That was a bold attempt, but not a successful one, at least on Schneider's side

One of my favorite new beers, I could possibly even consider this one for a session...a short one obviously.

A: very cloudy light orangish color with big large head, little lacing

S: bananas, faint sour apples, cloves and spices, hops

T: very much of the banana and caramel in the background with some hoppy spiciness up front.

M: light with more than avg carbonation

D: very very good beer that I can drink in large quantities, taste never gets old

Serving type: on-tap

A: Super cloudy, light amber in color, with a decent (but not fantastic) 1.5-finger head of off-white foam. Lacing is good, pretty typical for a Hefe.

S: A fantastic array of aromas! Hops aromas are strong, with fruity notes (pineapple and grapefruit) first and foremost in the nose. Deeper sniffs bring out the wheat beer notes that are so familiar in a Hefeweizen: sweet, malted grain; esters reminiscent of banana; spicy pepper with a touch of cloves.

T: Sweet grain is the initial flavor, followed by fruity pineapple and faint grapefruit flavors. Spicy notes are buried. The finish is more tart than bitter, especially for a beer with "hops" in the name.

M: Moist, nicely carbonated, with a moderately dry finish. The ABV is well-hidden.

O: A little too much sweet malt, especially when compared with what I expected based on the aromas. It's a solid concept, but to my taste a little more hops balance would have made it even better; the hops added fruitiness, but not much bitterness (I'm not saying they should hop it up to DIPA levels, just a bit more). Still, it's an enjoyable foray into a hybrid style.

Appearance: Foamy and large head, very nice retention and lacing. Super cloudy with year everywhere. It is unfiltered apple cider in color and opacity.

Nose: Oily hops, floral, mango, yeast. A touch of cloves and aspirin.

Taste: Pepper, clove, and crushed aspirin. Hops and banana. It has great mouthfeel and is very well balanced.

Notes: This is very good!
