Notes/Commercial Description:
Schneider version. This brew is the result of the long friendship of Brooklyn brewmaster Garrett Oliver and Schneider brewmaster Hans-Peter Drexler. Garrett had always admired the delicate balance of flavors in Schneider Weisse, while Hans-Peter had long enjoyed the effusive hop character of Brooklyn East India Pale Ale and BLAST! Garrett's concept for the collaboration was that each brewmaster would brew essentially the same pale, hoppy weissbock in the other's brewery, but with different hopping to reflect the local hop flavor.

Dry-hopped w/ Hallertauer Saphir.

500ml bottle poured into a weizen glass by freshness date.

Cloudy dark yellow honey color, massive rocky and silky light tan head with excellent retention, it gradually collapses to long lasting foamy layer cover on the top and leaves plenty of lacing patch and spot clinging all around. Carbonation seems to be actively high.

Distinctive touch of pineapple mingles with other mellow esters reminiscent of ripe banana and berries, crackery malt poking through along with note of floral hop and some spice.

Fruity sweetness covers the palate first reminding of pineapple, berries and banana bread. Hop reveals its trait of bitterness by delicately and firmly exhibiting from the middle to finish. A bit phenol and hint of alcohol ester yield the complex end that mix up with a steady bitterness, fruity ester and bready note. Hop bitterness is also last for long as an aftertaste.

The body is medium to full, smooth mouth feel with good crisp and some lively carbonation.

Wheatbock with delicious bitterness as leverage against its fruity sweet portion, good quaff ability, alcohol is deceivingly hidden.

500ml bottle from Good Spirits Co, Glasgow (£3.40):
Cloudy orange to amber with foamy, 3cm white head that held steady until I took a sip.

Strong banana & spice with faint alcohol. Background citrus & mango, orange & light hops too.. Fruity & fresh with good balance, some yeast & cloves. Nice stuff.

Banana & cloves to start with faint alcohol. Citrus, mango & pineapple with background hops & grassy flavours feature, as does some bubblegum.

Creamy with a smooth feel & medium body helped down with moderate carbonation. The beers alcohol content was noticeable but the fruits in the taste helped mask at least some of it.

A good beer and one that benefited from the extra hops in both the taste and smell. Whilst it was a pleasant beer I think I'd be put off buying it all that often based on the fact that it is a lot stronger and harder to get a hold of that several other German wheat beer.

Off roughly week old memories

A: A hazy orange color. Sediment is easily visible and the beer almost took on a grey appearance once I poured the sediment into the second halfpint I was drinking. Great head and retention.

S: Ester and phenol compounds usually associated with weissbiers. Banana, a touch of clove. Bready malty smell as well. A slight hint of booziness. Noble hops come through as well.

T: The esters and phenols seem to be less present, perhaps this was the brewers trying to keep the hop flavors from clashing? Spicy hops. Not overdone but enough to let you know they're there and definitely more than a traditional weizenbock. Bready malts, possibly and most likely a bit of munich. A bit of that alcohol as well. Interesting as multiple diverse elements come into play without clashing too much.

M: Nice body not overly thick or syrupy. Carbonation is higher but that's good for the style and makes the beer seem less cloying.

O: An interesting beer. Not something I would drink all the time or would really look out for but it was interesting. I don't really think it ranks as high as everyone say's it does but one can tell it is definitely a product that was well invested in and brewed integrity.
