Notes/Commercial Description:
Schneider version. This brew is the result of the long friendship of Brooklyn brewmaster Garrett Oliver and Schneider brewmaster Hans-Peter Drexler. Garrett had always admired the delicate balance of flavors in Schneider Weisse, while Hans-Peter had long enjoyed the effusive hop character of Brooklyn East India Pale Ale and BLAST! Garrett's concept for the collaboration was that each brewmaster would brew essentially the same pale, hoppy weissbock in the other's brewery, but with different hopping to reflect the local hop flavor.

Dry-hopped w/ Hallertauer Saphir.

Poured an opaque light orange, decent head.

Yeast, fruit, and somewhat of a funky off-note.

Holy cow this tastes awesome. Fruit! Like a banana-orange-pineapple slurry. Hops and wheat blend well. Also pear, peach and grapefruit. Complex and delicious.

Full mouthfeel goes well with the flavor.

I was pleasantly surprised. If I ever see this again, I will buy many many more bottles.

Off roughly week old memories

A: A hazy orange color. Sediment is easily visible and the beer almost took on a grey appearance once I poured the sediment into the second halfpint I was drinking. Great head and retention.

S: Ester and phenol compounds usually associated with weissbiers. Banana, a touch of clove. Bready malty smell as well. A slight hint of booziness. Noble hops come through as well.

T: The esters and phenols seem to be less present, perhaps this was the brewers trying to keep the hop flavors from clashing? Spicy hops. Not overdone but enough to let you know they're there and definitely more than a traditional weizenbock. Bready malts, possibly and most likely a bit of munich. A bit of that alcohol as well. Interesting as multiple diverse elements come into play without clashing too much.

M: Nice body not overly thick or syrupy. Carbonation is higher but that's good for the style and makes the beer seem less cloying.

O: An interesting beer. Not something I would drink all the time or would really look out for but it was interesting. I don't really think it ranks as high as everyone say's it does but one can tell it is definitely a product that was well invested in and brewed integrity.

This beer was a strange cross between an American ale and a German weisse...reminded me of a dream I had once about Ryan seacrest getting raped in a ditch off the side of the autobahn by Adolph hitler...and then Ryan giving birth 9 days later to a moustached tanned baby with sauerkraut for hair...not a bad beer

(bottle date 14 093 - poured into a jet-rinsed Schneider glass)

A: liquid is a nectarine skin hue, hazy... fantastic, sparkly, cotton candy textured white foam - at first, it leaves a bizarre lacing pattern similar to the net-like pattern found on a cantaloupe - it later flattens out into connecting broad bands of lace... keeps a cap all the way down

S: this may be the first time I can honestly say I immediately recognized the aroma of Saphir hops - strawberry (and another berry - dried raspberry?)... strong rose-like floral phenolics... smells like a garden in spring

T: strawberry shortbread cookie... alcohol with a fruit brandy flavor in the finish... up front, a startlingly bold hop flavor and bitterness for a beer made in Germany - flowery, "noble" flavors... doughy undercurrent and a bit of a cookie maltiness and nutty note (perhaps from the yeast) in the aftertaste

M: soft, satiny flow... bit of lingering boozy warmth... mild drying sensation on the tongue... wondering if the extra hopping enhances the plushy texture of what's already probably a plumply round body

O: second time having this - the first time, years ago when it came out, I hate to admit, I may have drunk straight from the bottle while liquored up one night... mildly astonished just how flavorful and enjoyable this beer is... this bottle was only a couple months old - kinda curious how some of the older bottles I have compare... this is a wonderful hoppy alternative to your ubiquitous IPAs
