Notes/Commercial Description:
Schneider version. This brew is the result of the long friendship of Brooklyn brewmaster Garrett Oliver and Schneider brewmaster Hans-Peter Drexler. Garrett had always admired the delicate balance of flavors in Schneider Weisse, while Hans-Peter had long enjoyed the effusive hop character of Brooklyn East India Pale Ale and BLAST! Garrett's concept for the collaboration was that each brewmaster would brew essentially the same pale, hoppy weissbock in the other's brewery, but with different hopping to reflect the local hop flavor.

Dry-hopped w/ Hallertauer Saphir.

Bottle:

Puts a really turbid gold ale in the flute with stiff tight pored cap, great retention massive lacing. Lively carbonation.

Wonderful pungent nose: bananas, grapefruit, spice, some mustiness, bubblegum and a touch of fusel.

Substantial body for a hefeweiss, rounded mellow character , Silken mouth feel, ... smooth as a fruit pudding with NO sharp edges at all!

Big fruits and citrus up front are balanced with spicy tones and citrusy hop bittering, middle is pudding soft and mellow with substantial body with leafy NW hops and malt sweetness joining the liquid fruit cocktail. Light drying in the finish punctuated with bitter citrus...light 'hop burn' in the after taste.

Frikkin' awesome wheat!

A: Super cloudy, light amber in color, with a decent (but not fantastic) 1.5-finger head of off-white foam. Lacing is good, pretty typical for a Hefe.

S: A fantastic array of aromas! Hops aromas are strong, with fruity notes (pineapple and grapefruit) first and foremost in the nose. Deeper sniffs bring out the wheat beer notes that are so familiar in a Hefeweizen: sweet, malted grain; esters reminiscent of banana; spicy pepper with a touch of cloves.

T: Sweet grain is the initial flavor, followed by fruity pineapple and faint grapefruit flavors. Spicy notes are buried. The finish is more tart than bitter, especially for a beer with "hops" in the name.

M: Moist, nicely carbonated, with a moderately dry finish. The ABV is well-hidden.

O: A little too much sweet malt, especially when compared with what I expected based on the aromas. It's a solid concept, but to my taste a little more hops balance would have made it even better; the hops added fruitiness, but not much bitterness (I'm not saying they should hop it up to DIPA levels, just a bit more). Still, it's an enjoyable foray into a hybrid style.

Appearance: Foamy and large head, very nice retention and lacing. Super cloudy with year everywhere. It is unfiltered apple cider in color and opacity.

Nose: Oily hops, floral, mango, yeast. A touch of cloves and aspirin.

Taste: Pepper, clove, and crushed aspirin. Hops and banana. It has great mouthfeel and is very well balanced.

Notes: This is very good!

This may be the murkiest beer I've ever seen, not too dark but like the water in a mud puddle. It's thicker with sediment than i think any beer I've laid eyes on. The color may not be pretty (muddy orange-yellow? Pale brown?) but the structure of the head, just the slightest tint away from white, is fantastic. it has remarkably impressive hold at a proud cap two fingers tall when settled, and I think I could rest a matchbox car on there without concern that it would fall. Lacing begins at the very top of my mug, webbing and sheeting the entire way down the glass.
The aromatics are exceedingly strong, and a delicious pungency pours out immediately upon pouring. It's extremely interesting, well-rounded, and complex, with lots of aromas coming together in unexpected ways to make something great. There's lots of citrus, but it's light and fresh, even crisp, which I never would have expected from a smell and never have gotten to this degree before. It mingles with earth, neither soil nor strictly green but something in between, and lots of stemmy wood. Keeping these seemingly opposing forces together, though, is the yeast, and it's got tons of clove, overripe banana pulp, and, very noticeably, fresh pineapple juice.
The taste has all these elements but it's a little sweeter, like the fruits were sugared, and a whole lot of bread thick on the tongue. Plenty of gentle, softer spices follow as well as a very soft peppery note. Malts are stronger on the tongue, with lots of wheat to boot, but grassy and stemmy hops bitterness, with a bit of citrus rind, are not overlooked. Banana pulp follows into the finish along with more breads.
This is a thick beer, thick on the tongue and all the way down. It's not clean, but it actually seems to get cleaner. Crispness actually develops nicely, seeming to cut through the heaviness. There's a touch of dryness and pepper on the very tip of the tongue after time.
This is a fantastically unusual and well-brewed beer. Experimentation like and exceptional collaboration such as displayed in this beer are what drive the craft.
