From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #60 (Jan 2012):

LOOK: Hazed peach, sticky lace

SMELL: Dusty clove, banana bread, lemongrass, spice, alcohol, nutty yeast, exotic berries, herbal, taffy

TASTE: Smooth, bready, phenolic, clove, banana peel, starburst, clove, yeast, warming esters, hop oil, leafy, kumquats, blueberry skin, chai tea

An exceptional Weizenbock. Seems a few German brewers are looking to break out of their rigid ways, without rocking the purity boat too much. What better way than to use a hop that will somewhat radically bring a new flavor to your beer without compromising. Kudos on the leap!

What a great Thanksgiving beer to have, this is a world class weizenbock but I should have guessed it would be from this great brewery.Poured into my Brooklyner Schneider Hopfenweisse glass a hazed orange infused golden with a thick clingy white head atop that lasted quite awhile leaving multiple rings of broken lace behind as it settled. Yeasty bannana, clove, caramel, and some toasted nuttiness in the nose,a good amount of malt complexity going on here. The mouthfeel to me is near perfect, medium with a great creamy mellow feel, its something I could drink all day I think.Flavors of bannana and clove-spice,but its got this subtle component to it,mild caramel sweetness with the alcohol extremely well hidden. This weizenbock I could drink all day, full flavor but immensly drinkable, outstanding without being over the top.

750mL bottle from the LCBO. Handsome design, nice bottle. Poured into a World Cup weizen glass (with a football forming the bell) and enjoyed whilst watching the Germany-Netherlands Euro match.

Slightly murky deep golden in colour. Big fluffy head that recedes into a thick ring with patches of lacing. The yeast is well - contained in the bottle so it shouldn't be an issue.

Nose is quite pleasant and I can see the influence of the tropical NZ hops immediately. In addition to soft banana, bubblegum and some more than subtle clove, there is some nice white wine, orange and tropical floral notes. That extra booze and wheat malt places this brew firmly in weizenbock camp, however.

Traditional weizen notes are certainly here, and there are subtle notes of tropical fruit and grape/wine. Not as refreshing and lively as was anticipated, but still quite nice. The mouthfeel of the weizrnbock is a bit much, however, and the carbonation is lower than I would have liked.

An intriguing effort, and certainly enjoyable, though I wonder if a straight hefe would have been a better showcase of the hops here. For the price tag, probably not again, but certainly worth trying.

Appearance: slight haze; gold turning to amber with egg white head

Aroma: fruit and spice exploding from the bottle; vines - white wine; orange and grapefruit; keep going back, it's interesting

Taste & Mouthfeel: more full bodied than expected, but still a medium; great medley of astringent fruitiness to start - orange, white grapes, currants - along with some fresh herbal notes; finishes lightly tart and lingers along with wheat malt for a good length

Overall: very good for a weisse with a fantastic nose, but gets tiring as the style usually does for me

750ml Prosecco-style bottle. Limited edition 2012.

This beer pours a hazy, glassy medium golden amber hue, with two fingers of dense, puffy dirty white head, which leaves a random array of droopy raincloud lace around the glass as it slowly bleeds away, much like my thumb earlier this afternoon.

It smells of fruity wheat malt - banana, a little bit of applesauce - spicy clove and black pepper, earthy yeast, soft tropical fruit notes, redolent of sassy white wine must, and a further floral, somewhat perfumed booziness. The taste is much sweeter wheat malt, the banana pudding character rising to a heady crescendo, with a receding yeastiness, steady clove and peppery spiciness, mild late harvest white wine notes, and more leafy, floral alcohol.

The bubbles are fairly frothy, but innocuous at the same, the body just on the lee side of medium weight, and quite fruity in its smoothness bearing. It finishes well off-dry, the thick wheat malt dancing a timely waltz with fadingly attractive foreign fruity hops, with the booze, as per usual, the social lubricant.

A rather good weizenbock, my only real beef here is with the sort of indistinct nature of the heralded guest hops - they're there, sure, but not in any measure that I might not have mistaken them for a touch of plain ol' Cascade. The wine character just doesn't permeate, leaving me with a kind of opportunity loss cost feeling. Good, but not as good as I was hoping - perhaps that's the German reservedness asserting itself here.

Cloudy orange body. Massive foam head, good retention and lace. Banana and tropical fruit aroma with an underlying wheat cracker note. Banana and gooseberry flavour up front followed by grapefruit and fairly high bitterness for the style. Medium-bodied with loads of fine, soft carbonation. Feels soft and velvety in the mouth. A well-crafted German weissbier, and a marriage of old traditions to new ingredients. I like it.

I had this beer in my favorite beer tasting ABT pub. ABT stands for Alliance of Beer Tapping bars/pubs. These bars have to have a broad selection of beer bottles and every month a new beer on the tap. This time it was the Schneider Weisse.

The ABT bars claim that the brew master Hans Peter Drexler changed the recipe a little specially for them. Hans Peter didn't change the name of his beer though so I'll review it here.

A - A dark yellow, a white headed and hazy fluid. It looks off style. The foam doesn't linger around very long and there is some carbonation visible.

S - What a strong and complex smell. I never smelled the banana esters so strong in a beer. There are also a lot of other fruits to be discovered in the smell as well.

T - Wow! What a splendid and different taste. A nice soft and fruity beer what hardly no alcohol presence. The taste is full and complex, up front some sweetness and in the after taste rather dry! I am not sure if I am going to give this beer a five.

M - A sweet and soft carbonation and after that it turns into bitter.

O - An excellent Weizenbock! Normally I am not a fan of this beer type, but after tasting this one I am sure I will come back to have another try.

Use this to transition wine drinkers to beer. Delightful accompaniment to supper, white wine on a clean German style beer, some banana and cloves. Good weizen and unique tasty beer. Above average mouthfeel. Good foamy head.Great drinkability, mild sauvin aroma. Classy bottle.

Appropriately hazy orange. Nice thick hefe head. Looks as it should.

Standard Weizenbock/Hefeweizen aromas, heavy on banaba. However, real characteristic Sauvin wine notes coming through with tart/acidic fruit.

Well defined German wheat flavours, typical of Schneider, a little light on the cloves. Sauvin flavours start to peak through mid-palate. Grapefruit and pear, sharpish white wine flavours.

Schneider one-offs are always something worth trying. This is no exception. This hop varietal has been getting alot of play recently, not always successfully. It works well with the style and plays nice with your standard wheat beer characteristics.
