Draft at Laschet's in a 10 oz. or so glass.

Opaque orange yellow, fluffy head of white meringue foam that leaves behind lots of delicate lacing to admire, and lasting surface coverage. 4.25

Aroma seems a bit subdued as it was served pretty cold. As it warms there are yeast esters, though it's hard to pull out much signature characteristics of Nelson Sauvin. Smells kind of like a strong hefeweizen, bubblegum and clove yeast esters. 3.5

Taste seems to have a slight oxidation present, papery notes to the wheat, some mild nebulous stonefruit, and a dry finish. Full bodied and fairly big in the abc department. Overall it was a bit of a letdown, not sure the age of the keg, but it didn't really seem hoppy or unique. 3.5/3.75/3.5

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 8/2/2011. Pours lightly hazy bright orange color with a 1 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big apricot, white grape, pear, apple, lemon, banana, pineapple, clove, wheat, honey, bread, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/earthy yeast, hops, and pale malt sweetness; with good strength. Taste of big apricot, white grape, pear, apple, lemon, banana, pineapple, wheat, honey, bread, clove, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness. Fair amount of earthy yeast spice on the finish; with lingering notes of apricot, white grape, pear, apple, lemon, banana, pineapple, wheat, honey, bread, clove, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity and robustness of fruity/earthy yeast, hops, and pale malt sweetness; with a great malt/yeast balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy, and slightly slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice weizenbock. All around great complexity and balance of fruity/earthy yeast, hops, and pale malt sweetness; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

God fucking dammit. I had this whole review just about wrapped up and the browser crashed. Fuck everything. Ok. Redo. Speed run.

Bought a 750mL bottle at a liquor store in Wellington. Why? Well the bottle was pretty, it came with a free glass, I've never had a shitty beer from these chaps before, and it said 'Nelson Sauvin' real big on the label. Lots of reasons.

A: Nice golden-brownish cloudy color and a greater head that's continuously upkept by the generous amount of carbonation bubbling up from the bottom. Head retention is great and there's very little lacing. We have a real clean beer here, y'all. Even at the end of this bottle-fermented beer, there is very little yeast residue.

S: The usual aromas you'd expect from a German produced wheat beer. Bananas, cloves, yeast and malts all give my olfactory a friendly high-five why the fruity aromas of the Nelson Sauvin wait behind to offer a coy handshake before hiding behind its parents. It's there. It's well done. But the hop head in me wants it to be more prevalent.

T: Damn. There's a really fun chardonnay flavor present here. Tight weizen characteristics throughout. I might be getting a little bit bold here, but I feel like there's an underlying sourness to it. In a perfect world, we'd see this aged and soured a few years in some pinot gris barrels. But perhaps that would be making an already outstanding and complex flavor too extreme.

M: Bang on. Not spectacular, or game changing, but they really nailed it. There is hardly any heat to it despite the 7.3%ABV. Carbonation feels great on the tongue and the body leaves little to be desired.

O: As weird as it sounds, I've had plenty of German wheat beers that were made with NZ ingredients/hops. This one takes the cake. I'm going to go buy another bottle for the cellar right now, actually. Definitely in contention for favorite weiss.

Purchased at the LCBO 750ml bottle for around $6.50. Served at 8deg C in a water glass. 2012 Edition

A- Pretty good. Opened well, poured with a decent head. Clear, mildly brown

S- Pretty good too. Hints of hops and citrus. Yeasty and fruity.

T- Excellent. This one sat for around one year after purchase. Nice wheat beer

M- Excellent. Very creamy and slick

O- Very good. Glad I have one more to savour this summer

Food Pairing

This nice little wheat paired well with... Spicy tuna sushi! Rolled a couple tonight and this went well!

Enjoy

Old notes, especially about the taste:

No. 3224; the 2012, had in 2013;
Fruity complexity, ranging from acidic (apple, grape, pear), to citrusy (orange, grapefruit weaker than expected, lime), to ripe (peach, apricot), to tropical (banana, light pineapple);
The sweetness is mild, provided by the fruitiness, and toned down by wheaty malts, lightly toasted bread; the spice is classic, with some nice clove mostly;
Also has a hay-stacky note, followed by herbal and floral goodness from the hops, which don't exactly nuke on the finish (not bad);
Alcohol is hidden nicely, and only tickles, helped by the pleasant carbonation; the resulting aftertaste is mildly bitter, leaving traces of the fruitiness and a wheatiness that lingers for a while;
A perfect weizenbock

Later edit: Just had the 2011 vintage, and the fruitiness is off the charts. Huge orchard fruit and exotic lytchee. The rest are the same. But the hops hugely enhanced the fruity character. This is extremely tasty, a real treat. Just a quick edit of the ratings, setting taste to 4.75.
