Another great 500mL bottle poured into a weizen!

Three finger head, straw gold body!

Smells of banana and malt!

Tastes of clove, banana, and malt!

Warming mouthfeel!

Overall, this is an interesting example of the many directions hefeweizen can go! Schneider is an excellent producer of the style, and truly does it again with this beer!

I'd highly recommend this beer to anyone with experience with hefeweizens. This is not for beginners or the uninitiated.

Finally I get around to a Schneider Weisse beer. I have been threatening to review one of their brews ever since I reviewed the mighty Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier years ago (and that threat was actually to review the Tap 6 Unser Aventinus which I tried in my craft beer infancy and have had no luck getting since). It has been a long road to get my hands on a Schneider Weisse - they really should think more about getting in to the Australian market [purely for my sake of course]. Anyway I have "my green" and now I'm going to enjoy it.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a Weizen glass.

A: Hazy with a gold and amber body and a firm 2cm cream head. Plenty of bubble action going on in the glass with some interesting patterns forming of their own accord.

S: Spicy clove phenols upfront on the nose and rather a bit of a nice dominating aroma for this Weizen. Hints of banana bread and herbaceous hops also give some body to the fragrance but it's the clove phenols that really stand out.

T: In a word: Fantastic! There is quite a lot more going on with the flavour profile of this Weizen - spice from cloves, pepper and cardamom mix in with lemon citrus, herbaceous hops, bitter orange and a hint of banana which lingers in the background.

M: Not so fantastic, certainly not as good as the Weihenstephaner Hefe in this respect - medium bodied with excitable carbonation, it's missing the "creamy" feel of a great Weizen.

D: Well this is a Weizen that takes no prisoners. It has some characteristics that really make it stand apart from Weihenstephaner's classic Hefe and in fact that is one of the reasons I rate this brew so highly - it has something Weihenstephaner doesn't have: bold spices and lemon/orange action going on. If that is something that you look for in a Weizen then look no further than Mein Grünes, a superlative brew, prost!

Food match: Roast and cured meats are a winner with this exciting ale, along with any other bold spicy flavoured foods you can get your hands on.

Pours beautifully with a good lacey head that lasts for most of the drink. Lovely golden color and a nice aroma but overly hoppy in flavour for my palate and a little too much on the bitter side too. Still a very decent drink though, but far from being a favourite.

Pours with a huge, fluffy white head with very nice lacing and great retention. It's a beautiful orange-gold colour, nice and hazy. The smell is quite interesting, consisting mostly of hops which is obviously unusual for this type of beer. Lots of hop flavour too, with a very refreshing feel. This is top quality hefeweizen.

Picked this up at a great beer shop in Darmstadt, Germany, Maruhn Welt der Getränke. Hazy yellow-amber pour with a two finger foamy white head with decent retention and lacing. The nose is earthy and spicy with hints of lemon, yeast, banana, clove, grass, wheat, and white pepper. The taste is herbal and complex with hints of lemon, clove, white pepper, corriander, subtle tangerine, banana, pear, apple, and grass. The mouthfeel is crisp and light bodied with fizzy carbonation and a nice tangy, dry finish. Overall, this is another world class offering from Schneider Weisse, especially considering I'm not a Weizen guy. It's really refreshing and hugely drinkable.

Pours a pale, slightly hazy amber. Nice looking head, creamy white, lingers a while. Smells much maltier than a typical heffe of the sort I'm familiar with, with some notes of toast and honey. Taste is malty, more like an October-fest marzen than a heffe, but not unlikable. Subtle bubble gum in the background. Not my favorite of the style, but good.
