Chestnut dark brown, neutral aroma. Initial white head. Creamy at first, taste gives way once warming to room temperature to some chocolate and gentle roast. A spot of fruitiness, fig, raisin For a beer with a bit of an OK sourish finish, it's fairly decent medium mouthfeel.
Underated.

750 ml bottle, as Jacobsen Original Dark Lager. Beautiful copper colour, good beige head. Moderate caramel malts aroma, some aromatic hops too. Clean tasting dunkel, mellow caramel malts flavour but not too sweet. Decent enough to drink, but not worth the high price.

Clear dark amber, thin beige cap. Generic bready malts and roasted chocolate, very mild potency. Taste add in wonderful dark fruits, but otherwise unremarkable, roast and bread still define. Feel is malty and smooth, yet it lightens up quickly with a finish that whimpers. Better dunkels out there

75cl Bottle: best before 25th May 2012, poured into three pilsner glasses on 10th march 2012.

Three thin white heads sit on top of a reddy/browny amber body which is almost clear and bright, but not quite.

Sweet molasses in the nose; caramel with some fruit and nut chocolate added for good measure.

Easy drinking, maltier and sweeter than most dark lagers.

Not thick not thin: about right for a lager based beer.

Not bad at all, pleasant without being great. Flatters to decieve a bit.

A: dark amber colour, light haze, little head

S: caramel, malts, pineapple and lychee, hint of hops at the end

T: burned caramel upfront, some red fruits and hops and malts at the end, bitterness lingers on for a while

M: on the thin side, under-carbonated

O: It's the first one of this style I've tried, and it calls for more trials. Decent beer a little bit reminiscent of scotch ales.

Appearance - a reddish caramel pour. A light, off-white head is conservative but maintains a thin cover.

Aroma - a light caramel roast on the smell. Not much beyond that, but decent.

Taste - slightly sweet caramel, a touch of butter as well. Little if any hop bite, perhaps just a touch of balance on the aftertaste. A little light on flavor but it's okay.

Mouthfeel - fairly average body and carbonation.

Drinkability - not bad, but I like the Saaz blonde better, although they both sport cool looking bottles.

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine May 2007.

Carlsberg digs deep by brewing this beer from a recipe from the 1800's. They add brewing salts to match the water profile to a blend of Munich malt and English floor-kilned malt.

Hazy dark amber color has no shine. We would have expected this beer to be a bit clearer. A solid two fingers of head stays for the duration and sticks to the glass in patches. Rich caramel malt aroma--on the sweet side--with a spicy herbal hop to balance. Firm smoothness with a fluffy, crisp bite. Medium body shows that this beer has more than just a little substance. Big mouthful of caramel malt is quickly followed by a bready toasted grain and a snap of hop bitterness. Suggestions of taffy and mineral in the middle. Spicy herbal flavors from the hops drag out in the drying finish.

Jacobsen ODL just goes to show that old school Lagers have actual flavor. It makes you wonder why more breweries around the world are not brewing malt bombs like this. Apart from the murky appearance, this is a great beer. Go towards meaty seafood like grilled lobster tail or pan-seared scallops with a side of mushroom risotto.

750 ML bottle without any noticeable dating, poured into a pilsener glass.

A- A moderate pour left a 1-1/2 finger, foamy, khaki head that drops to a thin film. The body is a red-brown (chestnut maybe?), with moderate to light carbonation. There are lots of nice rings and webbing left on the glass.

S- Lots of caramel and brown sugar sweetness with a little berry to sweeten things even more. Subtle grassy hops bring things a little closer to balance.

T- Caramel sweetness almost becomes molasses. There's a cherry-like tartness and a little grassy to spicy hopping in the end. The more I drank, the more I picked up on the spicy notes.

M- Clean, but viscus with light carbonation. It's a little lingering, no doubt helped out by the overall sweetness. There's the slightest of hop bite at the finish.

D- It's a pretty good drinker. It's more "no frills" than lacking. It's very easy on the pocket book. At $2.99 for a 750 ML, I'd definitely drink it again. (similar to the "saaz blonde" in that respect, more than expected at the price).
