Got this one from BobbyHeenan in a big box of Australian happiness. Cheers!
From a 75cl bottle into a snifter
APPEARANCE: Pours a two finger, fluffy, off-white head with good retention. Slightly hazy burnt orange with no carbonation evident. Head fades slowly to a full wisp and clings to the sides of the glass. A ring remains leaving touches of lacing down the glass. Good looking brew.
SMELL: Caramel, toffee, light butterscotch and some piney hops. Smells pretty nice. Bold barleywine nose, though not quite complex enough to compete with the best in its style.
TASTE: Not as impressive as the nose, but still nice. Flavorful with toffee and caramel sweetness, but some perfume-like alcohol as well. Big and lingering aftertaste of toffee, some butterscotch, bitter pine flavors and alcohol perfume, the latter of which hurts it somewhat.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. A bit lighter on the palate for the style, slightly creamy, goes down fine and finishes slightly mouth-coating. A bit of perfume alcohol lingers.
OVERALL: This one actually grows on you as it sits. The feel improves and the perfume qualities mellow a bit, but it's still not enough to bring this up to the top of its class. A decent, enjoyable beer that I wouldn't turn down again. Thanks again BobbyHeenan!
