I don't recommend this store at all. Each time I have been there I get the stink eye from the workers as if I shouldn't be there. Don't show up to the store with your own grains expecting that you can get them cracked because they have a ridiculous store policy where they refuse to crack grains from anywhere other than the store. The girl gave me the excuse that one time a guy came in with grains that weren't properly stored so it junked up the mill and they had to clean it. One time. I will never go to this store again.

I only stop at this store if I am in Newark DE since I live 30 miles away . I stopped in for a brew belt for my carboy they wanted $29. I purchased it online for $17.00 free shipping. I did purchase some yeast, malt extract, grain, hops and some other supplies and yes they are expensive on most items but they have to pay rent etc so I understand. If you need the items right away then go here.
The young man that helped me two weeks ago was very helpful, knowledgeable and courteous. The long hair blonde girl on Wednesday was not helpful at all she acted like I wasn't even in the store and when I asked her a few questions she was very snappy and you could tell by her voice I was intruding. She needs to go to some type of diversity training before she is allowed to work with the public. She definitely lacks manners.
I thought the store was closed because it was very dark inside and the open sign was off. I really like the store it is very clean and they do have a nice selection for a small store.
The owner his wife and daughter I haven't seen for a long time maybe they are only there on the weekends. They were always very helpful, kind and courteous.

I have stopped in here 3 times now. I do most of my buying at DE's other homebrew shop as it is closer to home, and have only stopped here while in the area to pick up the occassional item.
Nice sized store with a decent selection. They sure seem to have it all, especially a lot of the smaller "gadgety" items that some folks like, though they are not really my thing. Decent selection of malt extract and grains. Tons of equipment and looks like lots of wine stuff as well.
Service was pretty much non existant. Only once have I even been asked if I needed help. When checking out there was very little in the way of verbal communication. Kind of odd I thought. Maybe I am odd, who is to say?
Noticed some folks thought they were expensive. For what I have bought from here they seem right in line with other homebrew shops, actually cheaper in spots. Obviuosly they cannot compete with the online retailers.
Definately a great resource for the area. No idea as to what the knowledge level of the owner or staff is. I will be back as needed.

I visited the current location a couple weeks ago and had a very pleasant trip there. The store was easy to drive to, but partially hidden in the shopping center, but it there was a nice sign outside that made it identifiable.
They have a very nice selection of grains, bottles, brew kettles, and equipment. The store proprietors were very friendly during checkout, and perhaps a bit chatty for me, as I was in a hurry, but not annoyingly so. They often arrange grain groups buys for customers to help them save some money on bulk grains, which usually will come down to less than or equal to $40 for most base malts. I don't remember seeing their hop or yeast selection, but they did have a nice array of spices, flavorings, and other beer additives and cleaners. I would definitely return if I am in the area again as the store is organized, clean, well-stocked, with friendly service

How do you Brew? moved to a new location in 2007. There new location is much larger than the old one and their selection has inceased quite a bit. Their hours are now better too. Also, most everything they have is neatly out on display now where before some items were 'in the back'. Hops and liquid yeasts are kept orderly in a fridge and otherwise the store is clean and organized. The owners and employees are helpful, though I get the feeling the owners know more about winemaking than advanced brewing and ingredients. My only, and usual, complaint is that they have problems with their malt mill. It often gets stuck if the hopper is simply filled with grain, so an employee has to stand and slowly feed grain in, making the process tedious and lengthy. They have a separate hand crusher for chocolate malt, which they claim gums up the mill. I've never seen these problems at other homebrew shops.

Have stopped in this store number of times. Very helpful in getting your recipe together, also offer other suggestions if they do not have a certain item in stock. Large selection of supplies for brewing. Stopping by during the week you have time to get what you need. Both husband and wife are very helpful with beer making.Prices are a bit high but the other location in Chadds Ford,Pa is not as helpful and higher in price. Saturday is sometimes crazy in there and you need to know what you want to get or you could be there for awhile. Wish they would open earlier on Saturday since they are closed Sunday and Monday.

How Do You Brew has good variety for its size. The store offers everything from specialty malts to wine kits to fruit extracts. It is small and because of that, it is fairly tight. The owners (husband and wife) are very nice and helpful. I am not sure of their actual knowledge when it come to advanced brewing - they know how to talk though. Their stuff is fresh - vacuumed bags and such.
I recommend doing your homework before going; Personally, I feel that their prices are ridiculous - expensive ingredients AND equipment. It looks like others disagree, but originally using Maltose Express in CT, I find their prices 40 to 50 percent higher in most cases.
Unless your really need something - I wouldn't recommend the store based on price; however, there isn't much else around.

Very nice homebrew store. I have been there many times, last time was within the past month. This is the next best option to ordering online. Husband and Wife that run the store are very helpful. If you email your order in advance (week or so), they will get it boxed up for you and all you have to do is pay when you get there. Ordering in advance is also useful because they will either order what they don't have or call you and ask if you want a substitute grain, etc.
edit: Prices are higher than ordering online, but if you're in a pinch for some ingredients, it's worth it since it's the only homebrew shop in Northern Delaware.

Good little homebrew store run by a husband and wife. They are usually willing to help and answer questions.
The hours are limited.
Selection seems pretty good for the small size of the store. They are willing to order anything for you as well. Website is pretty nice as well and lists everything they carry in the store. Prices slightly better than the Wine & Beer Emporium in Chadds Ford, PA.
I usually try to stop in every time I'm in Newark or passing through. If only I was into homebrewing when I was going to school at UD...
