Hofstetten Granitbock pours clean, brilliant brown under a rocky 2” light tan tinted white foam cap. The nose is all bread and malt with some kettle sugars and no hops. The palate is rich dark bread, sweet malt, and dark sugars and a suggestion of toffee with long lingering malt flavors and a touch of hop bitterness on the finish. This is a very rich, creamy, smooth and full bodied beer with medium carbonation.

Nice head to start, but quickly dissipates. Dark, Sweet, reminiscent of a fine Belgian abbey ale, but this is german all the way. Big flavors of raisins, caramel, and black strap molasses. As a doppelbock, it's got the appearance of a porter but the mouthfeel of a much lighter beer. The sweetness creates a slight syrupy quality.

Clear brown colored beer with next to no head formation.

Smells sweet. Scents of malt nuts and grass. Fair scent of molasses. Smells fairly woody and has a strong tea aroma.

Starts out sweet with a taste of tobacco. Medium level of bitterness and some nuts, it has a very clean finish for the style.

Mouthfeel is good.

Tasty and user friendly Bock beer this is worth a taste.

This was a hazy chestnut brown, it poured with a small off-white head. It smells of molasdes, raisins, sweet bread, and some roasty cocoa. I kinda get some boozy fruitcake.

This doesn't quite deliver what the smell promises. Sweet fruitcake up front a drier, roasty cocoa finish that is a bit chalky. Silky smooth body.

Pretty good doppelbock, not one I'd revisit though.

Light tan head that fades away fast. Color is a murky caramel hued brown.

Flavors of dark fruits, molasses, raisins, caramel, and chocolate. A lot of malts. Some grassy hops. Bready. A bit of toffee.

Mouthfeel: Fairly dry. A decent amount of carbonation. Medium to full bodied.

Overall, I wasn't too impressed with this one. It has a bit of a roasted flavor in the finish and it ended kind of dry. Good flavors, just bad mouthfeel/finish.

Rolled the dice on this one paid 2 bucks for a vintage 2009. Here we go!

A - I am baffled after 4 years it still has some fizzy carbonation. It does fizz out rather quick though into a thin lace ring. Color is a very dark hazy brown with sediment left at the base of the bottle.

S - Smell is pretty mild with some soy sauce and candied dark fruits mostly plum and fig. Not very sour or offending in any way.

T - Damn I guess at this point it's very oxidized with cardboard and metallic notes then comes the cherry sourness followed by just a hint of dark fruits. After a while I can almost convince myself it has a caramel flavor to finish the glass.

M - Light to medium not a bad dopplebock.

Overall after hearing this one costs around 10? dollars a bottle so for two dollars its ok. Not really the best just not terrible.

A: 1/2" tan coloured head over brown liquid.

S: Figs, pears, molasses, green grapes, biscuit.

T: Molasses, bitter lemon, granny apples, green grapes, hazelnut.

M: Medium to thin viscosity and a low level of carbonation.

O: Much more bitter than I'm used to for the style. Instead of caramel and sweet dark fruit this doppelbock tastes of lemons and molasses.

to be honest I bought this because I like the packaging with the old school pop-top and the 2011 vintage dogtag...and I've been in a beer rut lately...new career, stress, blah, blah..

It's dark, it's got a lot of carbonation, and looks damned good...let's take a whiff shall we?

Sweet molasses from the malts dominate this reviewers nose, some slight alcohol esters as well..

maybe I'm off my game, but my first impression is " kinda ordinary"..some malt sweetness, hint of spiciness( pepper) with a very dry, slightly astringent finish..kinda boozy as well

see above..but add somewhat thin and even slightly watery

@ $20 a bottle in Canada have your friend buy one and then go Rock, Paper Scissors for the cool dog tag..

I have always wanted to try an authentic steinbier (``stone beer'') and was thrilled when I found this in one of my local bottleshops. Poured from a bottle into a New Belgium snifter. The beer is very dark reddish-brown, slightly hazy, and sports a nice head. It smells like a dopplebock. You get deep bready, toffee aromas with a slight spicy note.

The beer has a full body and firm, slightly creamy mouthfeel. Lots of soft malty sweetness on the front of the tongue. As you ``chew'' on the beer, the malt flavors deepen and turn into caramel, brown sugar, toffee, treacle, and char. A bit of pepper-taste not unlike that in a good Maibock enters around mid-palate and adds character. A slight boozy taste at the finish makes the sweet toffee flavors seem richer. As the beer warms, the malty flavors become even more intense and complex.

This beer made for a stellar drinking experience. True, it tastes a lot like a dopplebock. However, the caramelization of the wort on the hot stones during the steinbeer process does add a lot of depth and intensity to the malt flavor. If you're a fan of malt bombs, you have got to try this beer (or some other traditional steinbier). Be advised though that this beer won't relinquish all of its secrets if you just absent-mindedly sip it while watching television. You've got to concentrate and tune in all your senses. Do that, and this beer will reward you.

Appearance: Pours a hazy russet color with a rocky tan head; excellent stickage and lacing action

Smell: Caramel, figs, hazelnuts and toasted brown bread

Taste: Caramel and toasted brown bread, up front, with the figs and hazelnuts adding another dimension in the middle; nicely balanced through the finish with some tobacco in the aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body; somewha creamy with moderate carbonation

Overall: A really nice example of the style, even after over two years in the bottle; not as sweet and fruity as some but very easy to drink

Review from 6/2010 notes. Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Poured a deep red amber with a trace of off-white head that left no lacing. Sweet malt aroma. Flavor is sweet caramel malts with dark fruit, quite pleasant start. Finishes somewhat abruptly with a dry, slightly astringently bitter finish. Medium bodied, low carbonation. A bit uneven, but enjoyable dopplebock.

Pours an obscured chestnut with 2 fingers of pillowy cream colored head. Many floaties, good lacing, above average head reteention

S: Figs & brown bread

T: Follows the nose, herbal/leafy hops, faint dark cherry flavor as well up front. More figs, caramel, brown bread & woody hops as this warms, along with some tobacco notes. Finishes figgy with a touch of cherry &dryness

MF: Chewy, slight carbonation

A good dopple, but I believe this isn't in top condition, still very drinkable

750ml swing-top bottle, 2011 edition, label-free, with a chain-tag around the neck indicating point of origin, and a bunch of other stuff, all in German, of course - I'll dial up Google Translate at a later date.

This beer pours a clear, very dark rusted ruby hue, with two fingers of thinly foamy beige head, which leaves a random kaleidoscope of frizzy lace mutations around the glass as it gently settles.

It smells of astringent caramel, somewhat bready, with some further treacle and toffee Euro tendencies, soft, tart black fruit, a bit of straight-up granular brown sugar, and cowering, yet functional, earthy hops. The taste is raisin-heavy bready malt, the 'karamel' taking a reticent backseat, the black fruit still staying on the windward side of sweetness, with some even dark sugar and sharp leafy, weedy hops striving for balance. An increasing boozy, somewhat metallic edge makes that job all the more difficult.

The carbonation is perceptibly proficient, the body a deftly slim medium weight, and agreeable smooth, in the face of that same understated burgeoning alcohol edge. It finishes off-dry, but less sweet than I had anticipated - and to my delight, the hops outweigh the heat in the credit department.

A decent doppelbock, not too big, not too small, and if I may say, quite close to just right. However, the warmth becomes a bit too forward, at times, but overall, that seems forgivable, as the complete flavour trumps (uber) all(es).

A. Dark brown in color with a tan colored foamy head with fairly decent retention time and lacing levels.

S,T. Toasted and roasted malts, some nice dark fruits, good levels of richness without being too overbearing or cloying. Unfortunately there is also a certain lack of a standout characteristic or complexity, it seems that this is a doppelbock played completely by the book, for better or for worse. I even find myself wondering if this is a single malt beer. Only the faintest of earth hop garnish could be detected and even then only when allowed to warm up in the glass for a while.

M. Smooth textured, lighter side of medium thickness, light carbonation.

Pretty much a textbook "Ye Olde-School" Doppelbock.

Brewed in 2009.

Pours a slightly murky dark brown with a 1/2 inch foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is very malty with some dark fruit and brown sugar aromas. Taste is of toasted malt, dark fruit, and some mineral-like flavors on the finish. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but the mineral-like flavors are a bit off putting.

Poured a darker brown with low white foam. A very faint malt smell, but very minor. Not distinctive.

Quite malt fwd taste, with notes of chocolate and coffee. Sweet throughout. Low carbonation, makes it almost syrupy.

Flavorful, but simple. Easy drinker.

Graniitbock is brown, almost straight crayon box brown. It's also thick, being highlighted but only seen through at the edges. A tight tan head just short of one finger tall leaves pretty good lacing at the top that dies off as it dissipates.
The aroma gives something akin to gently spiced sugar cookie. I doubt any spices were actually used, but things come together to give a ghost of an impression. Burlier breads linger beneath.
It's breadier in flavor, almost like sourdough but with that sour coming out in the finish. It's too metallic, though that is part of an overall molasses flavor. There's a rye-like earthiness, though not as much spiciness.
The body is medium, maybe a bit light for a doppel, and while a crisp note opens it out and it's fairly smooth, it goes a little flat.

Poured a half inch creamy tan head which held solid at first but ended up rapidly deflating. The body is a dark raw umber brown, almost coffee. It smells very nicely of deep malt, kind of like fresh rye bread, too. The taste also is malty but a little less than the smell, and I pretty much only get malt out of it. The body is quite light, more so than I'd have expected from such a dark beer.

Pours a deep copper/amber color with a one inch white, light head.

Granitbock is one of my favorite beers, but it isn't always the same, depending o how it has been cellared. Sometimes the malt sugars are very pronounced and amazing making it a favorite, but sometimes it is more mellow and tastes like dark bread.

This one has a creamy texture and it's taste has a hint of sour with yeast. There is a very good malt character that isn't burnt or covered in dirt, the malt is well preserved with just a slight hint of residual sugars.

Not the best one I have had, and i can firmly say now that this beer is best enjoyed as fresh as possible.

Bottle dated 2010 05 poured into a tulip. Mostly clear red/amber body with a two-finger tan head. The head fades to a nice cap and leaves a little lacing.

This smells terrible. Metallic and musty. Perhaps a little raisin, but hard to tell through the metal.

The taste is a little better, but not much. Some dark fruit and dark malt are there, but the metal taste is still there as well, in the background, disturbing the flavor overall.

I would have expected a dopplebock to age reasonably well and not be terrible in a year or so. But, this is likely going to be a drainpour.

Picked up this 0.5l bottle at DeCicco's (Brewster) last week for $5.99. Quaffed yesterday, 04SEP11.

Poured into a standard nonic glass, it was a clear, dark, rich mahogany color. Head was sparse and thin, a few gatherings of beige bubbles mostly at the rim. Abundant maltiness wafted forth, with semisweet caramel filling the air. Body was close to medium, and it had a decent, smooth feel going down.

Flavor had a solid amount of malts, with caramel and toffee sweetness coating the palate. The malts were well represented, but I couldn't pick up anything in the way of hopping at all. A rather simple, straightforward DBock, to say the least.

Pours dark brown. Slightly tawny. Short bubbly tan head. No retention. Mostly bubbles.

Smells like Munich caramel malt extract and roasted barley straight from the brewshop. Faint rum raisin notes along with a jerky-like smell.

Strong malt flavors up front that transition quickly into a slightly stale tasting finish. Faint date and raisin notes.

Medium bodied, pretty flat with low carbonation.

Overall I Don't really know why but this bottle grabbed my attention and I had a good feeling about it. Needless to say I was pretty let down. Being produced in '09 I feel that this beer is just past it's prime. I'd definitely like to try it fresh, but I do not recommend drinking this beer with substantial age.

This is some kind of classic, all musty, old fruit, and tiny bubbles. Best feature is a robust creaminess that fills the mouth. The big taste, however, is something like oxidized wine, burnt sugar, and browned butter. On the sweet end, prunes come to mind. Then there is a tart peculiarity like pomegranite and over-ripe plums. A touch of bitterness, but it's just part of the earthy funk.

I don't find this very drinkable but it's certainly an interesting catalog of flavors not often encountered. Tastes like an elderly English winter ale of some sort.

Poured a dark brown body which left 2-finger head and lace. A strong, sturdy malt base smell as I pick up bread/cracker - a dryness, and also some sweetness and a touch of hoppy fruitiness. Strong, medium-bodied, a clear smoothness makes it easy to drink and there's a balance in the beer as it finishes crisp thanks to carbonation. A good malt base as I pick up that touch of dryness, but mostly a syrupy figgishness as well as some caramel and dark chocolate. Also some fruit flavors akin to dark fruit and/or black cherry. A quality dopplebock that isn't as heavy and the mildness makes it an easy to drink brew.
