2010 bottle. How will a 12 year old bottle of doppelbock hold up, I wonder?
This one pours a slightly murky dark brown color, with a small head, and a little bit of lacing.
This smells like brown bread, chocolate, raisin, port wine, and lots of caramel.
This is super silky, with a pleasant sweetness but fairly dry and almost wine-like on the finish, with distinct port and chocolate-like flavors. There’s black cherry and raisin here, with a good caramel character, and a taste that’s kind of like honey covered brown bread.
This is medium bodied, with a light and soft carbonation. I expected this to be nearly flat, so the carbonation being present was a nice surprise.
This was a very cool find from B United. It has aged extremely well.

From the bottle, it pours a clear dark brown color with a nice light brown head that slowly reduces as you watch. Roasted malts in the nose. The mouth gets a sweetish roasted malt flavor that is smooth and creamy.

This Steinbier was new style for me. But was pretty decent, and on draft went well with the Donar sandwich!

definitely a little age on this bottle, as it has some oxidation to it, but a tasty and quite complex and distinctive example of the style overall. not much head from the bottle after the initial pour sees a small off white film dissipate, amber to red liquid with some haze, a bit of caramel color too, and some body visible in the globe. it smells and tastes just a touch stale, has a little astringency to it, but has a ton of richness from the grain, a long cooked almost barleywine character, some doughy old world lager yeast, and fruity notes of cherry and raisin and date and even maple to me, although this is a lot less sweet than most of them are. hints of apples too, unfiltered cider even, very autumnal to me, oddly tangy as it warms, but it seems to work somehow. this needed a food context after a few sips, and i was lucky to have grilled fatty pork ribs to pair with it, a match made in heaven with this one. the smoke and char really works with the richness and textures of this beer. a little alcohol pokes through, and the overall level of refinement seems off due to lack of freshness, but its a pleasant drink and a neat example of the style. enjoyable but this will not be my go to doppelbock either, i like how different it is.

Welcome to the next phase of Bock Me & Bock Yinz! I Almost Forgot That It's New Evil Voodoo Twin Ranger Sunday (Week 745)! It's gonna be interesting!
From the Bottle: "Seit (since) 1229"; "Steinbier (stonebeer) Bock"; "Fermented in a 200 year old granite trough"; "[undersigned] Peter Krammer Dipl. Biersommelier".
Having Pop!ped the cap, I could already smell the sweetness of the malt wafting from the bottle's interior. Mmm. I began a slow, gentle, C-Line pour that in turn began a pseudo-cascade. As it settled, it puffed up mightily to form two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head with excellent retention. Color was Brown to Dark Brown (SRM = > 22, < 27) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was rich with notes of caramel & treacle to accompany the breadiness that I initially noted. Have you ever had B&B Brown Bread in/from a CAN? It is marvy, especially with a schmear of PHL cream cheese. This smelled exactly like that brown bread! The monks had it right when they referred to Bocks as "liquid bread", especially to get them through their fasting periods during Lent. I am slowly fasting quickly today. Mouthfeel was thick & rich, like a dollop had been scooped onto my tongue. More background - this is an authentic steinbier (stone beer) in which a superheated rock (stone) is dropped or inserted into the boiling wort to create a caramelization action. 8=O Boscos in Nashville, TN used to make a Flaming Stone Beer before they closed & I made a special trip to try it. I think that I like this one a little better, though. Man, this was such an easy drinking beer that I got lost in my memories & drank easily a quarter of it in a mindless way. No problem, except for the ABV which was bound to catch up with me at some point! 8=O Finish was semi-sweet, which was about the way I like Doppelbocks to be. If they are too sweet, my hophead self gets put off fairly quickly. Here, the tang of the treacle really helped to keep the caramel & breadiness in check. Between the relatively low price point & the fact that it is an Austrian import, I was VERY satisfied & impressed. Why does this matter? My scores are going to be comparatively high.

I reach the quarter-mark (25 Hads) for doppelbocks with Granitbock. Being a malt-head, only 25 makes me feel like I'm shirking what I like (but I also tend to have more of the brands I already like in the styles I already like... and I am less venturesome as I reach the Medicare crowd.) As for the beer .....
Granitbock Looked pretty good with a hard pour, but even the lace went away as I finished. What did not dissipate is the almost complete integrity between the Smell (mostly malt and dried fruit) and the Taste (mostly dried fruit and malt.) For mouthfeel, I knocked a few points off because the chocolate after-taste is, well.... something is not quite right.
Would I have this again? Probably only as a taste-off with one of my Top 5... let's say Korbinian.

I put myself in the mood for this with some coffee, chocolate and stuff. I was totally receptive and in the mood for this Austrian treat.
It looks (!) thick. It is a full bodied bock. The aroma is sublime. Like a low alpine flower. Unique.
The taste sours the great aroma a bit, but it is just an acquired taste. I love it.
Highly recommended.
