Single bottle purchased at the venerable Charleston Beer Exchange.

Probably served around 50 degrees in my Ayinger D-bock glass.

This beer TRIED to gush forth as I popped the cap (not a good sign for a doppelbock...) but I was faster than Mustachio and dumped it into my glass where it puffed up a decent reddish head that faded away after a minute. The beer is very red-amber.

Smells okay, but just okay... sweet caramel, prune, some hints of malt interesting-ness. Lacks the malt depth of a truly great doppelbock as well as the bold aromas, but this covers all the bases and is not really flawed...

Taste is average as well. Maybe a bit above average. Decent depth of malt with burnt sugar / toffee notes, some dark fruit (mostly prune), and some alcohol, but alas! there's nothing really here to keep you coming back. It lacks subtlety and finesse, and that's hard to describe, but if you drink this next to Ayinger you'll immediately see the difference. Granitbock finishes strangely dry and mouth-coating, and is rather ungainly. Carbonation level is quite high, unusual.

Reading the previous reviews, I suspect there are QC issues with this beer. Mine was highly carbonated and had a fine, encompassing level of fizz that is quite odd for this sort of beer.

I really wanted to like Granitbock, what with being from Austria and a Steinbier and all. A pity you cannot win them all - Granitbock is decent, but for the price is difficult to recommend.

Pours a murky chocolate brown color with a small and short lived head; looks flat after settling. The aroma is not overly strong but has the traditional dopplebock aromas; a bit meaty with some raisin notes. The taste is big with the dark fruits, raisin in particular, light roasted meat, honey, and iron. Again, not very robust. The feel is light to moderate, though it drinks light, there is a tingley carbonation and it finishes sweet. An average dopplebock, definitely on the sweet side as the dark fruit flavors are predominate. I would like to see a touch more of a roasted malt presence to add some depth.

A- Pours into my tulip a murky mahogany/walnut wood color, with a half finger head. Poor retention, and nothing left behind in the glass.

S- Fairly nice burnt sugar complexity, deep malts, dark fruit. Fairly standard doppelbock aroma, but nothing in particular to write about.

F- Unfortunately that falls apart a little on the palate. Flavors are thin and insipid, but what is there is dark raisins, a bit of minerality (flinty/iron) that I assume is coming from the granite. Finish is a great big wallop of diacetyl...

M- thin, undercarbonated

D- I likely won't finish the bottle.

It was interesting to try, and I'd try another "stone" beer, but the underlying bock has to be a little better to begin with. Not worth the price of admission ($5.49) for sure....

Saw this obscure import thinking it was a going to be smoky, like the other Steinbier i've had, Rauchenfelser.

Tawny ruby brown, a decent finger of head stays on the surface for awhile. Soon after it fades into a ring at the edge with patchy skim. A swirl brings back the coverage momentarily.

Sweet brown sugar and caramel aroma. Very malty and only mildly toasty. The flavor follows suit, big brown sugary doppel flavors with little in the way of smoked flavor. It's chewy, rich, and supple with a mild apple flavor from the yeast. Not bad to try, it's a little too sweet for me to return to over drier Doppelbocks like Asam-Bock and Celebrator.

Appearance: pours a hazy brown color with a short head that falls to a spotty surface foam quickly. No lace develops.

Smell: sugary sweetness is strong and there is some softer ripe fruit tones in the background.

Taste: big sweet malt profile. Brown sugar, ripe plums, honey, and mild bitterness. Alcohol is slightly noticeable.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied. Lightly crisp to start, smooth and syrupy at the finish. Aftertaste is long on the sugary sweetness.

Drinkability: this is a slow sipping beer that is a bit too sweet to drink quickly. If you are in the mood for a malty beer this one will work.

Pour - Rather murky brown but a brilliant reddish auburn when held to the light. Lots of tiny little bubbles form a creamy off-white head.

Aroma - Dark brown bread, molasses, brown sugar, coffee, sweet milk chocolate and dark baked fruits.

Taste - Strong, sweet, unfiltered apple cider. That is what comes to mind initially. A good dose of brown sugar and molasses sticks on my tongue in the finish. This is almost juicy in flavor without the smokiness I was expecting.

Overall - Sweet. Very sweet. Lots of dark brown sugary flavors and extremely easy to drink. Definitely worth trying if you've not had a beer made in this style. The hot stones definitely give the malt a big boost.

Would I buy more of it? - It was worth trying once but I doubt I'll buy another bottle as there is too much else out there that I still need to try!

Pours a cloudy, dense brown color with an average size off white head and average retention. A little lacing.Smells great. Sweet caramel malt and some dark fruit.

Taste is very good.Sweet caramel malt, dark fruit, toffee. Everything perfectly balanced, not too sweet, not at all cloying.

Mouthfeel is rich, sweet with a little hop bite at the end. Not quite the meal in a glass of some Dopplebocks

Drinkability is great.I could have had a lot more of this.

I had this beer in a pilsner glass. It was a medium brown color with some red highlights. A medium sized tan head. Strong malt aroma, some dark fruit. Sweet. Big malt taste, sweet raisin. This was a chewy beer. It reminded me of the brown bread I used to eat with my baked beans. Very nice.

$5.50 per .5L bottle at Knightly Spirits in Orlando, FL. This brew pours a clear, brownish/dark red, and there's a small, but lasting head. Carbonation leans toward the low side, but is not inappropriate for the style. There's a superb, rich, toffee aroma in this beer that most American breweries never come close to emulating when trying to brew a bock. The flavor is even richer than the aroma. The delicious bock flavor in this beer is also something which is rarely found in bocks brewed outside of Austria and Germany. I'm really digging the malty, caramelized toffee flavor of this brew. This is an incredibly smooth doppelbock and one of the best I've had in a while. There's a strong maltiness, but that's what I like in a doppelbock. A little more carbonation would make it less syrupy, but it's excellent just the way it is. This beer is too expensive, but it is a very good example of a traditional doppelbock.

Im drinking a cellar temp bottle poured into a snifter. The beer gushes as I open but somehow I manage to catch every drop in the glass. Foamy yet not overwhelming with only about 2 cm beige head forming in the glass. the beer itself is a deep chestnut color similar to maple syrup. The head recedes rapidly to a thin edge layer and some foam islands.
The aroma is caramel and toffee with a bit of brown sugar mixed in for good measure. Perhaps some maple syrup notes as well.
No hop presence here.
The first sip reveals a spacious almost non-existent carbonation, almost like cask conditioned, body is average with a relatively clean texture that is only slightly sticky on the lips.
Flavor is sweet malt through and through with caramel and toffee, some biscuity notes and a bit of brown sugar. Again no hops to be found, there is just a faint wisp of bitter alcohol on the finish, but overall this is a malt lovers beer. Not overly complex but certainly drinkable and enjoyable.

This is a dark brown amber with glowing red hues, lively and thick head, quick to come alive and serious with the retention.

Oh, Sweet molasses splashed on dark wheat bread. a tangy, buzzy heat tingle and subtle herbal backdrop. The malt has a very nice, warming, sweet and complex aroma.

The malty complexity is the star of the show here. This Bock has major amounts of sweetness from caramel to smokey-oaked molasses and maple syrup. a jazzy medium body keeps it lively but there is a malty heftiness to it. Balance is about right with a nice dry-herbal hop in the back with slight peppery notes and a decent heat. finishes dry with smoke and wood left over.

A damn fine Bock for this Granite-stater.

Pours the color of dark maple syrup with a frothy head that pretty quickly disappears. Doesn't look particularly impressive, but delivers well on smell and taste.

Smell is of roasted malt and dried fruit. Nice. Taste is of a solid, roasted malty flavor, with hints of fruitiness and caramel. Very smooth, too.

This is my kind of beer much of the time, and the only thing that limits its drinkability for me is the price per bottle.

Deep brown with a frothy tan head.
Smell is over ripe fruit.
Tastes really good....heavy on the dried fruit, caramel and even licorice in the aftertaste. The body is a bit lighter than most doppelbocks, which just makes it more drinkable.
A very good option..I look forward to this on tap.

"Oh no you don't," I think as the head tries to creep over the neck of the bottle. Lazily poured into a pint glass, the head quickly breaches and I am able to nearly top the glass off. Looks like maple syrup.

Dull malty smell as Johnny Damon boots a can of corn fly ball from David Ortiz in the bottom of the fourth.

Taste is nothing exceptional. Deep, straightforward malts dominate the whole of the mouth and cover the tongue. Finish is round and smooth, much more enjoyable than the last few overmalted doppelbocks I've had the misfortune of trying.

Not really much to say about this one, unfortunately. It's a little on the dull side but good if you want to chug your doppelbocks, I suppose.

Served on tap at Mr Dunderback's in Tampa FL. Standard pint glass serving.

Poured a darker brown with low white foam. A very faint malt smell, but very minor. Not distinctive.

Quite malt fwd taste, with notes of chocolate and coffee. Sweet throughout. Low carbonation, makes it almost syrupy.

Flavorful, but simple. Easy drinker.

Draught @ Cambridge House; This one pours a cloudy. ruby tinged lighter brown color. There was a small tan head that leaves a little lacing. Lots of caramel malts and earthy notes to the nose. Some dark fruits down there also. Plums? Raisins? The taste is very good. It is very well balanced. Just dry, with a faint sweetness in the finish. Maybe some smokiness also. Lots of caramel malts in this one. Hints of the dark fruits. Very nice!

Had this on-tap at Brauhaus

A - Very rich ruby brown body, dark and inviting. Small cream head atop this solid mug of beer.

S - Roasty sweet malts and dark sugars are in the nose. This beer smells rich and malty sweet. Some dark dried fruits and dark sugar/molasses are present.

T - This beer tastes much like it smells. The flavor is very rich and complex. Delicious darkness of malt, brown sugar, mollasses, dark caramel, dried dark fruits like figs and prunes.

M - Like most malty beers this has a very smooth mouthfeel. It's rich and full of flavor but free of a heavy syruppy body. Perfectly carbonated.

D - I really love dark beers, malty beers, double bocks etc so I can down this style. But for anyone, this beer is easy to drink, its just so smooth and soft and the taste alone will have it sliding down.

Notes - I passed over this one for a long while at my favorite spot and am completely regretfull I did. I really like this beer alot and suggest it to anyone.

On-tap at Gourmet Haus Staudt

A: The pour is a dark amber color with a fair amount of haziness and a couple fingers of khaki head.

S: A nice caramel and toffee sweetness on the front, like a usual bock. The steinbier process/character comes through shortly after with some definite salt and iron character coming through. Finishes up with some fruits and sugar like dates, plums, and molasses.

T: There is the same blend of salty and iron flavors right away, and the sweetness follows. There's a good maltiness with some moderate caramel and molasses. However, there is not as much fruit character, though.

M: The body is medium with a moderate level of carbonation.

D: My first steinbier and it was pretty interesting. I actually liked it quite a bit. Don't know if I would drink a ton of it in a sitting, but I finished my glass.

On tap at Gourmet Haus Staudt. An authentic German steinbier, I've been looking forward to this. Dark copper in color, cloudy, opaque. Ample carbonation feeds a lasting head. It's malty on the nose, heavily caramelized but also very earthy, mineral, almost metallic. Hops seem to be buried beneath it all. The palate shares the same mineral and earthy notes. It's semi-sweet, very caramelized though not as metallic as I was expecting. The use of hot granite in the wort does add a unique mineral quality to the beer, but it's not overwhelming. I enjoyed this far more than I was expecting.

Pours dark dark brown with zero head.

Aroma is deeply malty, slightly burnt.

Flavor follows the aroma with deep malt, some balancing bitternss sticks around on the palette.

An interesting beer really sticks in the mouth. I like it.

Appearance: Dropped off to my table a hazed, deep dark brown body topped with a full, foaming, tan-colored head.

Smell: Fruity, malty nose, combining scents of baked apples and pureed raisins with notes of bread and caramel with a spray bottle spritz of clean alcohol.

Taste: The taste is alive with a dark breadiness smoothed over with well-caramelized sugars. Smidgen of roast. Deep, delicately tart fruitiness carries over from the nose. Slight, growing chocolate presence as it warms. Very restrained hop character and bitterness. Touch of warming alcohol presence on the fruity, sweetly malty, smooth finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Very slight chewiness to the overall mouthfeel.

Drinkability: No trouble here finishing my portion. A fine, upstanding bock, providing you like'm sweet and malty.

On tap at the Brick Store in Decatur.

Pours a light tea-like brown with a small tan head that recedes quickly and leaves traces of lacing. The aroma is dominated by the caramelized malts and fairly sweet with hints of a toasted character and spices in the back. The taste follows the aroma with caramel malts and a bit more sugary sweetness. The mouthfeel is light to medium for the style with decent carbonation. This is a very good bock and certainly original in the brewing process.

On tap at the Brick Store Pub. According to the menu, "white hot granite stones are dropped into this brew to get its caramel smoothness". Others have done this as well, and it does taste somewhat similar. Pours dark chestnut with a very nice head and some decent lacing. Smells fruity and malty with clean caramel throughout. Tastes richly fruity with caramel, somewhat sweet, and with fairly sumptous flavors without being heavy. Some slight char on the finish, but light and clean thrroughout. Quite soft and creamy in the mouth. Pretty much as advertised, this was a nice change of pace. Nice.

smell: huge bock aromas - caramel, toffee, massive caramelized malts

taste: hmm a "stone bier", white-hot granite dropped into the wort. the result is a massive body with burnt toffee, caramel, and smoke punching you in the face. i found this one a bit much after a huge dinner but it was rather interesting

mouthfeel: gummy, full bodied

drinkability: a bit challenging

On draught at the Brick Store. Dark mahogany body is capped by a creamy beige head. Good retention gradually diminishes to some attractive sheet lacing.

Aroma is caramel, stewed apples, and some spicy hops.

Excellent mouthfeel has a sublime creaminess. Medium body with restrained carbonation.

Taste has a malty base of toffee and caramel. Dark fruity notes(figs) add complexity. A hint of spicy hops adds balance.

Really well done and quite tasty.
