Brewed in 2009?!...This has some age on it.Pours into a small tulip glass a murky tawny brown with a half finger creamy light beige head atop.Port-like notes in the nose, quite nutty with a good amount of alcohol dipped stone fruit. The feel is a little thin for the style ,the back end is where it's noticed most but it's also mellow and good for sipping.Raisin and fig notes on the palate with underlying nuttiness and sweet alcohol holding court to the finish.Very English in nature with vinous qualities as well as the mellow feel.

Hoffstetten Barley Wine pours clean, bright chestnut under a 1” lightly tan tinted foam cap. It does not have a lot of aroma – hints of fruit, caramel and toffee. On the palate this in one of the most toffee intense beers I have had with a faint cola flavor in the background and some grainy spice. It has just enough hops to control the malt and finishes with a touch of astringency and a taste of alcohol and a light, lingering sweetness. Clean, smooth, medium full body and average carbonation.

There are quite a few different versions of this Barleywine. As far as I know, the beer was brewed first in 2009 for the beermagazine bier.pur. There was also a 2010 bier.pur version with adapted hop contribution, notably Aurora (Super Styrian) from the hopfields around in the region. Furthermore, Calvados barrel aged versions and even brett versions.

Mine was the 2010 version and I picked it up early this summer at the brewery. If I remember it right, there was only one more bottle left in their shop.

Pours a clear copper body with only little amount of foam. Some finee bubbles. No lacing, some fingers.

Malts, caramel and faint roast, dark berries like black currant, dark Austrian bread, volatile alcohol carries the aromas but does not booze. Nice and complex.

Starts out malt sweet like a dark Doppelbock but is enhanced by those tical port flavors, dries out, leaves the mouth on a gentle bitter note and warms from the alcohol.

Little but gentle carbonation that lifts the medium to heavy towards oily body. Some dryness and some alcohol heat.

This is a well aged Barleywine that plays into the field of a Doppelbock especially considering the malt choices. I am glad I picked this one up and my wife too.

On tap over at the Pride, listed as Sour Barleywine and I'd say that's a better description because this isn't like most Barleywines.

Pours an amber color in a tulip glass, decent sized light tan head, sticks around for awhile although there isn't much lacing.

Smell has a nice toffee aroma with touches of dark fruit and a subtle citrusy sour scent in the way back.

Taste starts out with a mild sourness along with a strong caramel malt backing, very nice dark fruit complexity, the tartness builds on each subsequent sip but never becomes too strong to make you pucker too much, sweet but not even close to being too much or cloying, this would make a good beer to break people into sours provided they don't think "it went bad", carbonation is a touch high compared to other barleywines but works for this beer, strength is well hidden and I never got that alcohol warming feeling (at least in the mouth).

Here goes my first Austrian tick. Picked this one up at West Lakeview Liquors. Appearance is a deep tawny with tame head. A bit of cloudiness here, and some lacing left behind. The nose is rich and malty. Notes of dark fruit, red grapes, caramel, and molasses come through. Not picking up any barrel character. Taste is super sweet and fruity up front. This taste more like a doppelbock than a barleywine. Again, heavy grape candy like flavor with tons of of sweetness and minimal hop presence. Finish is sweet, nearly cloying. Again, no barrel character. Mouthfeel is heavy with low carbonation. Overall, quite disappointed by this. It doesn't really taste like a barleywine and the wooden barrels is claims to have been aged in are absent from both the smell and taste. At 5.49 for a 11.2 ouncer, I will gladly pass on this in future occasions.

2009 is the year in which this beer was produced.

Murky brown with loose lacing and collar.
Aroma has some alcohol, pecans, dry toffee.
Flavors all around are sorta dry for a barleywine. There is not much hiding the low 8% alcohol, it stands out more then i would expect. Dry toffee and nutty notes, some off Metallica notes and Dark Fruit.
Dry and light for the style.

Another Barleywine slayed.

12 oz from Auslander. 2009 vintage pours a supa hazed brown color with minimal tan head and lacing.

Nose is nicely oxidized malt that totally smells like Kit-Kat bars and chocolate covered raisins floating in some Sam’s Choice Cola. Smells good, I like it quite a bit.

Taste is light and caramel, less sweet than I thought it would be…lighter body too. There is still a leafy, grassy hop finish that is nice. The main driver is caramel and toffee… and lots of it. If I had it blind, I don’t know what I would think. I guess English BW since BA is down right now. ABV is well hidden, although its not really that high at 8.3%. This beguiling, yet straightforward beer has been able to keep me interested all the way through and my random musings are now at an end, alas the glass is empty. Very fun beer to have Chris, and I wont be forgetting my first Austrian barleywine anytime soon!

Bought a 11.2 FL.OZ. bottle of this from The Wine & Cheese Place in Clayton, MO for $4.39 (discounted price!). Poured from the dark tan/brown labeled bottle w/ beer barrels & wheat on the front into a 16oz Dewey's Pizza Pint Glass. Has BREWED IN YEAR "2009" / CHG No "11" on the back of the bottle.

Aroma- Has a great amount of malt and caramel notes from the get go. Semi-rich but mostly smooth and easy going on the nose. Appreciate it since this is an English Barleywine and not an American version.

Appearance- Pours a less than .5 finger head that dies immediately. Has a rich amber/caramel looking body with semi-haziness. Leaves TONS of rings of lacing and suds down the glass.

Flavor- A nice subtle, sweet, and heavily caramel influenced barleywine. Tons of toffee and complexed flavors throughout. Light bitterness on the finish.

Mouthfeel- Medium-Full Bodied, Medium Carbonation, Semi-Chewy but smooth, and then leaves toffee on the palate.

Overall Impression- Very subtle and light richness! Enjoyed the toffee and caramel flavors throughout also. Would love to pick up more of this and lucky to have gotten a discounted bottle. Recommend for an English Barleywine!
