A- very light, pours about the color of a pilsner. not much of a head or lacing.

S- almost all malt. a hint of hops poke through.

T- very malty up front. tastes like vienna and caramel malts might have been the only malts used, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. spicy hops show up and add balance in the middle and ends sweet with more malt.

O- not bad, but i would have liked to see some toasted malts used to make things a bit more layered.

On-tap at Hollingshead's in a half-liter mug, on to the beer:

This marzen goes to the light side. It features a golden yellow color with thin whispy lace and very little head retention. The nose is sweet. Pale malt sweet. Light grassy hops add a little different beat to the aroma. As expected, it has a sweet flavor. Medium sweetness overall. It's probably what I was expecting from a pale o-fest. Grassy notes take place as well. Dry and crackery as the flavors fade. The crispness is at medium intensity, rolls off the palate with a pleasant bite. Lighter overall.

O-fest season is over, but even around Xmas time, a lighter beer with some flavor is not a bad beer to knock down after Xmas shopping.

On the expedition of lagers/pils, I continue with a German brewer that I discovered during this last 6 months. Really enjoyed another beer I'd had from them while out and about, so this was a good find.

Pours a light to slight orange gold. Has a thin white head that flairs and dissipates and then continues with a very delicate straight lacing through the beer itself. Lighter side of the Marzen, but the ABV is 4.9, so it makes sense.

Smell comes off a bit skunky. Could be partially with the hops, but may be slightly off. A fair amount of crisp mineral essence. A small hint of sweet lager like malt. Very straightforward, a bit on the light side.

Enters with a gentle sweetness and a mineral character. Drops quickly into the noble hops and the skunk tones but then tapers back into some very interesting light malts and hints of minerals. Very light caramel, almost a cream sort of taste with it, and then some sharp, but restrained, bitterness that makes the beer quite crisp.

The mouthfeel is almost impeccable, I could definitely drink this on a nice warm Oktoberfest day and be very satisfied. It's smooth, crisp, a tad biting. But it maintains just a small amount of malt weight to remind you, "Hey, autumn is just around the corner!" I really can't say anything bad about the mouthfeel on this nice, lighter end of Marzen.

Overall, pretty good, but not fantastic. I may have a slightly off bottle, but I would probably buy it again. I like this brewer quite a bit and would really like to be able to find other beers from them. Great quality Marzen here. Just not as complex as I had hoped. It is worth buying one bottle to try it out.
