The robust full-bodied flavor comes from the dark roasted malts and is accented with a coffee espresso roast by our friends and neighbors Charleston Coffee Roasters.

Nitro on tap at Charleston Beer Works. Nice thick head, I was excited. The taste was very flat overall. Cold thin coffee.

Picked up this local staple at a nearby grocery store. Not sure that I like the new look of their revamped branding, but it must have worked because I've skipped over this beer countless times. When I got it home it promptly went in to a standard pint glass. Pours a deep, dark brown color with garnet accents visible at the base. Totally opaque through the middle. The minimal tan head dissipates in short order, leaving only a thin coating of uneven bubbles and no lacing. The appearance foretells the thinness of the beer. In fact, it looks quite lifeless. Despite the underwhelming appearance, the appetizing aroma gives off ground coffee and some roasted malts. Hints of chocolate with a little floral hops in the background. The flavors are actually quite potent. Unsweetened black coffee with a bakers chocolate bitterness and some complimentary hop bite. There's an interesting metallic, mineral flavor in the middle. Perhaps from the charred malts. Semi dry finish with lingering dark cocoa and coffee roast. The aftertaste is only slightly boozy and reminiscent of a double fudge cookie. The big letdown in this beer is the lack of body. Watery mouthfeel and reserved carbonation yield a very light bodied brew. I'd say this one is enjoyable, yet basic. A bit too underwhelming for a beer with so much potential. Local brewer, local coffee roaster. Should be a slam dunk! Instead it just leaves me wanting. More body, more depth, more balance from increased malt sweetness. That said, it's still an enjoyable (albeit thin) porter. Easy to drink. Admittedly, I am a fan of Russian Imperial Stouts, so I tend to gravitate toward porters that are bigger and bolder. As coffee porters go, I give the nod to Highland Thunderstruck or Kona Pipeline. You may as well just have a Founders Porter or Breakfast Stout if these flavors are what you crave though.

12 oz bottle served in a ansifter.
Pour is blackish and opaque with a bubbly head that soon reduces to a thick ring.

Aroma: coffee dominates and smells more like brewed coffee than beans. Enough dark roast to show even with the strong coffee.

Flavor: black coffee and dark roasted grains in about equal measure. Both linger on in the aftertaste where there's some (unobjectionable) char as well.

O: medium+ body; Properly carbonated and fairly smooth.
