Thanks to Bob Kamholz for this one! Bottle freshness date of 10/21/11. This was just purchased at a reputable store in Ohio two weeks ago. Hmm...
Pours with a frothy white head that doesn't quite stick around the way I expected. Light copper color, good clarity, and rather effervescent.
Caramel maltiness in the aroma. A fruity, apple cider-ish note as well.
Taste is sweet, with a slightly stale malt character. One-dimensional. Apple cider fruitiness and hardly any hops. Bitterness seems low for the style. None of the intriguing noble hop spiciness that I consider the hallmark of a good Märzen.
Carbonation is ok. The beer still manages to finish cleanly, but the overall balance tilts towards sweet and boring; not much of an invitation to order another.
Slightly disappointing. Perhaps this one was brewed too early in the season and it's showing signs of shelf abuse. A casualty of the creeping-earlier-each-year seasonal beer release epidemic? I would consider trying this again on draft, or at least closer to the bottling date.

Great Lakes Oktoberfest from Great Lakes Brewing Co., a seemingly early start, but whatever. Poured from the bottle into a liter glass drinking boot, this brew's got a 3 finger thick pale tan head, knockout lacing& a body that is the textbook definition of amber. What a sexy beer!
I smell gloriously roasted malts; perhaps a dash of caramel. A satisfyingly full aroma.
Tastes nearly identical. Full as they come and still crisp! Earthier hops balance this brew out JUST enough. I love the taste
Mouthfeel is smooth and clean. No lingering elements here.
Overall, a fist pumping 4.25 is given to Great Lakes Oktoberfest from Great Lakes Brewing Co. I implore you to give this brew a chance. It blew me away, obviously. This brew will be a staple in my fridge during its circulation period.
