can't say much that hasn't been said already. one thing about this beer is it is remarkably sessionable, which is kinda scary considering the 7.5 abv. The beer feels rather thin for an ipa, and i think that's what makes it go down so easy. get a 6 pack, stay home, and enjoy.

Pours a crystal-clear gold with a foamy white head and great lacing. The aroma is fairly subdued by todays IPA's standards but has a very pleasant balance between a lemon/pine, herbal hop character and a breakfast cereal graininess. The flavor follows suit, and as with other Great Lakes beers I have had, it is more pronounced than the aroma. A firm, clean piney bitterness opens into herbal, citrus hops balanced by a moderately sweet, bready malt backbone. A mostly drying finish leaves some bitter pine and citrus pith notes on the tongue. Overall, a very pleasant beer that is very different than most of the other IPAs on the shelfs these days. I am not sure how British this beer is, it seems more old-school American to me, but regardless it is still excellent.

It’s the adult version of Kona big wave. Nice malts with the bubbly bitter hops. Malts have more character in this one than Kona wave and the abv is felt. Great summer go to if you want something a little heavier than a lawnmower beer.

Great Lakes Brewing Co. "Commodore Perry IPA"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "For freshest taste, please enjoy by: 4/19/22 31033AE"
$2.79 @ Foodery Beer, Phila., PA
Notes via stream of consciousness: As an aside, I happen to know a descendant of Commodore Perry, one Mr. Drew Perry who owns Double Nickel Brewing in Pennsauken, NJ, not that it matters. Great guy though. On to the beer... Commodore Perry IPA is a solid American IPA that could easily be a go-to beer. It's clear, deep golden to amber in color, and has a short head of lightly off-white foam. The aroma displays a combination of malt and floral, gently citrusy, and otherwise fruity hops. The flavor follows with a bready and lightly caramelish malt and more hops. I'm finding notes of grapefruit, pine, berries, passionfruit, soft oregano, and a general spiciness. The alcohol has a moderate presence at 7.7% ABV but you know it's there. It never clearly shows though. A solid bitterness backs it and it finishes mainly dry with some malt steadily eroding and that hop spiciness rising. It eventually lingers with bitterness, herbs, and spice remaining. in the mouth it's medium bodied and gently crisp. The head retention is very good and it leaves some nice lacing about the glass. I haven't had one of these in over ten years so it's like day one for me right now. I'm not sure why, but I kind of see it as a cross between an English IPA and an American IPA, but then again, aren't all IPAs at least a little bit of that? I think it's the caramel malt that makes it seem English although they certainly haven't gone too far. They at least haven't used caramel 60 which was so popular in the 90's. Hmm, I wonder if they've changed the recipe over the years. Regardless, it's really nicely done. It's well brewed, superbly balanced, and nicely rounded.

Poured from 12-ounce bottle into a mug. Dark amber colored body, with a couple of fingers of white head that settled to a thin cap leaving some spotty lacing. Notes of caramel on the nose that become more prominent as the beer warms. Notes of citrus and pine follow. These characteristics are present on the palate as well, with a lot of pleasant bitterness (boasts 70 IBU). Medium bodied, with a pleasant mouthfeel and a dry and bitter finish. This is well balanced, with a solid malt backbone that doesn't contribute much sweetness at all. It is also very easy drinking for the relatively high (7.7%) ABV. Overall, not much to complain about. Quite enjoyable (and a great accompaniment to spicy sausage pizza!).
