12 oz. bottle poured into a Kate the Great snifter. Best by 5/5/12.

Appearance - Pours a dark brown with a sizable khaki head. Not much by way of retention, but there's a touch of lacing on the sides. The body is a bit translucent for a stout.

Smell - Coffee all over. Touch of hops, but it's all coffee roast. Pleasant, if monotonic.

Taste - Whoah, it's good. Coffee roast again, but coupled with a nice chocolate depth. Delicious roasted flavors. A touch of sweetness coupled with a slight hop bitterness that makes it feel creamy without being overly sweet.

Mouthfeel - A little thin. The flavors don't last on the tongue. It makes me want to drink it faster, but I shouldn't at 9%. No hint of alcohol.

Overall - Its flavor is just that good. Really nice. I can't wait to try the BA version. Yum.

Went down to the cellar to find a solid stout, came out with this one. Can't believe I have never had this! BB date is 5/15/12, good thing I am drinking it now! I am sure that in two weeks it would have been nasty ;)

A: Pours a deep dark brown, letting light in around the edges but pretty dark. Head is minimal and soda-like. Nice lacing.

S: Smells of anise, black licorice, sweet brown sugar, dark molasses.

T: "RIS-light", in that it has all of the characteristics of the big baller RIS, but just toned down about a notch. Molasses, licorice, dark fruit esters, roasted malt, bitter chocolate. Even close to the drink by date, this still has noticeable bitter hops as well.

M: Carbonation is quite high. Alcohol is present, but not overwhelming or terribly distracting. Some bittering hops provide a somewhat dry finish. Less body than some other RIS, about middle of the pack.

O: A very nice RIS with solid drinkability. Very tasty and well-rounded, but certainly an everyday type big stout rather than a special occasion. Nothing terribly special or complex, but tasty nonetheless.

A - Black, with a tan head that has decent retention and lacing.

S/T - Taste surpasses what I get from the nose. Depths of malt flavor ranging from dark fruits and roasted malt at first, turning into more of a rich dark chocolate as it warms up. Enough hops to taste some pine, finishes mostly dry with a little warmth.

M - Full body, fairly smooth, carb level was perhaps a touch too high, but still remained mostly smooth.

O - Splendid beer, drank easy. I enjoyed the transformation of this beer as it warmed up. Seek this one out.
