A: Black pour with a big frothy milk chocolate brown head. Great retention and lacing.

S: Boatloads (approximately) of roasted malt. Some bitter coffee and chocolate. A little bit of sweet fruit - cherries maybe? Alcohol is quite noticeable in the nose. Very pleasant.

T: Tons of bitter roasted malt up front with some coffee. Turns very creamy with some chocolate in the middle and into the aftertaste. Bitter coffee carries in the aftertaste and sticks around for a while afterward. A touch of cherries in there too. Alcohol pretty well hidden but there is just a bit of pleasant heat in the aftermath.

M: Thick and creamy. Tingling bitterness from the roast and coffee lasts forever between sips.

O: Excellent RIS especially given the price point and availability. Too bad they don't distribute out here!

Present from my son after being out of town for a week on business.

Bottle poured into a snifter

Pours a very dark but dark brown not black color. Head has dark brown color but does not linger.

Smell is of chocolate with dark roasty smell as well.

Taste is chocolate with a slightly hoppy finish. Finish is smooth with little bitterness.

A really good stout, another one that I am going to wish was more available.

A - Sexy silk black

S - Dark chocolate, coffee, dark malts

T - Bitter, twangy

O - Although Great Lakes is one of the best, I was surprisingly turned off by this offering. Perhaps it was due to the Belgian xms brews I had prior to this one but still... I even stopped drinking after this one. Sorry :/ I wanted to like it...

12 oz. bottle poured into my bruery tulip.

A: Dark brown in color. The pour created a two finger tannish head that faded to a thin rim and left nice lace.

A: Roasted malt, chocolate, a touch of smokiness, and some earthy hop notes.

T: Chocolate and roast dominate. A sticky molasses sweetness presents itself in the middle, and a coffee like bitterness finishes it off. No hint of the ABV.

M: A bit lighter then what I was expecting given the name. But still a full body.

O: Although a very good offering, I was expecting a stout with more body. But the flavors were there, and I would absolutely have again. Skal.

Not quite black but dark brown in color. Less than one finger of head forms but hangs around for a little while. The head settles to a thin film. Moderate amount of spotty lacing is left down the glass.

A bit of an unusual aroma for an imperial stout. It has a sweet and slightly fruity smell. Some alcohol fumes also hit the nose.

Enjoyable flavor with the flavors I have become accustomed to in imperial stouts. On the sweeter side of the stout spectrum, but very moderate. Highlights include hints of chocolate and coffee. Light flavors of roasted malt comes in near the finish. Alcohol is detected and is warming.

Not the biggest bodied stout but has enough heft to be satisfying. Really enjoyed the carbonation as it gives this beer a very nice texture.

I see this as more of a traditional RIS. Is not over hopped, overwhelmingly sweet, or overly boozey. But it also fails to really excite me in this "bigger is better" competitive style. But that is what BA Blackout Stout is for.

a: pours a respectably thick opaque black. 1 finger dark brown head
s: roasted malt, coffee. dances off the olfactory bulb

t: roasted malt, dark coffee, a touch of booze mixed in

m: thick, swishy, tasty

o: Love this stout, not trying to be Dark Lord or Abyss, falls into a wonderful category of it's own. Enjoy!

A - Medium-bodied black pour. Half a finger of head leaves a thin sheen of nut colored foam at the top, darker bubbles ring the glass. Some red light makes its way through the bottom of the glass.

S - Yum. Boozy chocolate sweetness with a hint of coffee hits me first. A little funk on this one when I give the glass a whirl. Some bready caramel aromas are coming through as well.

T - Oh wow. That's excellent. Much more flavor than the smell would have suggested, and much more body than the appearance would have! I get a bittersweet chocolate first. Then a light roast but creamy coffee taste mingling with malts in the middle. Roasted cocoa, espresso beans, and a touch of alcohol in the end are balanced out gorgeously with a hit from the hops!

O - This stout was awesome. From the second it hits my tongue I'm enjoying it immensely. Very drinkable, likely ages quite well (could be the tiniest of bits smoother), one of my new favorites I think.

T -

After being in the right place at the right time last night to try the Barrel Aged Blackout Stout, I found a local merchant with a small supply of this beer available and picked up a 4-pack.

It tastes and smells significantly different to me. Still good but not nearly as smooth and rich feeling as the barrel aged cousin.

There is a nice sweetness in the background but the roasted flavors dominate and there seems to be bite not present in the barrel aged version.

A top-notch stout. Just wish the barrel-aged version was more readily available ... I'd pay the premium without hesitation.

big thanks to beerhan for hooking me up with a four pack of this awesome brew! poured this into a tulip and it looks amazing. three finger mocha colored head sits atop a pitch black body. the head slowly recedes to just a sea foam cap, but loads of sticky lacing decorate the sides of the glass. smells of smoke at first, then the chocolate bitterness comes thru with a roasted malt presence. the taste is opposite of how it smelled. with the chocolate up front and a slight smoke finish to it. mouthfeel is a little thinner than what i expected while i watched this get poured. still a good feel to it with great carbonation and a slight alochol burn on the finish. overall i would say this is one of the best non-barrel aged stouts out there. if great lakes makes a bad beer i haven't found it yet. seek it out!
