Great Lakes continues to impress with their awesome beverages. The Glockenspiel is noe exception. The beer pours a dark copper with burnt orange highlights. No real head of which to speak, just some thin wisps on top & a small ring around the perimeter. Marginal lacing at best. The smell includes sweet nose with just a bit of tartness. Light fruit notes - banana & apple. Hints of clove. The taste exhibits more tartness than in the nose; almost sour with banana & orange tones. The mouthfeel is a bit downgraded due to the heacy ABV. The body is heavy Overall it's drinkable, but nothing about it screams exceptional by any means. Worth a shot, but I'm no hurry for another.

12 ounce bottle, best by 11/11/2009. It's nice to finally see this brew being bottled. Served in a Weizen glass, the beer pours a dark red/amber color with about an inch and a half off-white head. Head retention is excellent, lacing is good. The bubbles come up from the bottom of the glass to the top long after the initial pour. It smells like cloves, bananas, figs, plums and wheat. The taste is similar to the aroma, but not quite as strong. It tastes like cloves, bananas, yeast, dark fruit, wheat and a bit of peppery spice. The flavor lingers long after you take a drink. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's creamy and is well carbonated. Drinkability is pretty good too, it's very smooth and easy to drink. Overall I think this is a good brew, I'll definitely have to buy another 4 pack soon since this is a seasonal beer.

A-Great looking beer....impressive burgundy color...minimal head..

S-Overripe bananas jump out right away on the aroma...then some raisins...also a nice aroma of cloves and finally but not last a fresh wheat breadiness..

T-Grilled banana's...some raisins...a little bit of cloves on the finish...the bready wheatiness is there too...lacks some of the choclate notes I enjoy in some in this style

M-Clean as all these Great Lakes beers seem to be....maybe it's the type of water in Cleveland that imparts this feel I write of...I don't know but it is what I perceive to be a clean water feel...Not as sticky or of chocolate flavored as some...

D-As expected another fine beer from Great Lakes. Wouldn't put it in my top 3 but well worth drinking...

12oz. Poured a red-brown color with a minimal head that was quick to dissipate into nothing. Aromas were malty at first - caramel and toffee - some hints of clove. Initial tastes were loaded with malts - toffee and caramel up front. Quickly, the weisse qualities intermingled - bready yeasts, clove and banana notes. Mouth-feel was medium bodied with little carbonation. Alcohol is present, but not overwhelming - leaves a tingle on the tongue. Finishes well-balanced and slightly dry, but only enough for you to want another sip. Overall, very good take on a German classic. Another great brew from Great Lakes.

The color is a deep, rich brownish red with coppery red highlights. The head starts off decently, and it resembles a bourbon in color, though with a light foamy head leaving some lacing behind in the glass.
There's a lot in the smell, and the complexity is fantastic. Dark fruits, caramelized sugars, light alcohol notes, banana, some gentle spices, clove, and breads are all completely discernible. A lot of the sweetness is from the malts, which are accompanied by a mild, light hops smell.
The taste follows suit perfectly,and what follows is nothing short of delightful. This is by far the closest thing to resembling bourbon that I've drunk from a beer bottle to date. It's very boozy, the alcohol becoming more noticeable as it warms and lingers.
Carbonation is moderate at first and becomes much milder as it goes. Body is medium and it ends up being silky smooth.
This is one of my very favorite brews to this point from GLBC, and my mood would determine whether I'd go for an Edmund Fitzgerald or one of these.

MMMmmm, nice brew. Poured aggresively and got an ok tan head that quickly subsided with no lace. Color is a hazy copper. Aroma is a Bavarian hefeweizen with loads of malt. Flavor is like aroma with lots of caramel and some toffee. Great body and carbonation. Finish is a bit sweet but decent.

Review from notes on 7/12/09

A - clear deep garnet with a quick 1/2" head that fizzed away quickly. I guess the 8% abv killed it. 3.0

S - Rich caramel, figs, bananas, and vanilla. Light earthiness too. 4.0

T - Lots of smooth caramel, some dark ripe plums, a little banana, and carob. Complex and tasty. Yeasty bread taste apparent after swirling and adding the sediment. 4.0

M - Rich, full bodied, very smooth carbonation. Excellent! 4.5

D - Extremely drinkable. No alcohol detected at all. 4.5

Misty burnt peach colored with a milky tan head that's short in rise, but sticky and lasting.
Apple and Pumpkin pie aromas, complete with dough, crust and cinnamon. Then, subtler banana effects, honeyed cereal grains, cloves, vanilla, toffee, and a not-unnoticed booziness.
It enters the mouth with a pronounced doughy, pie-like maltiness, hinting at toast and caramel, then finally settling at pumpkin. Toasted nuts roll in next, fully slathed in brown sugar. Some unattached vanilla notes, then a bowl of toasted wheat flakes with a slice or two of banana. Yeast nuance is subdued, but clove arrives after time, as well as some slight pepper. The finish brings a well-heeling, but evident, nearly Bourbon-y (wheated, obviously), booze bite.
Pushing full-bodied, but given some sparkle with the persistent tiny beads of CO2. The alcohol makes is slick and greasy or time, but it never hangs or grips ungainly in the mouth, and becomes far too drinkable given its weight.
Another notch in the belt for Great Lakes. There are a few things that might be tweaked here, but I can't realistically argue, as I gluttonously slop it down.

a: deep amber orange colored - surprisingly little yeast in the bottle leaves this weizen clear, an off-white head quickly fades to a thin ring 'round the glass

s: a body of toffee and caramel malts partially thinned out by the use of wheat carries moderate yeast esters - mostly clove and fresh banana, the booze and fruity syrup aromas are almost reminiscent of a malt based liqueur, dark breads, big golden raisin and perhaps some date, mildly spicy noble hop aroma, big and richly aromatic

m: a moderate, prickly carbonation spreads the medium body across the palate

t: my experience here consists of mostly toffee and some dark sugars complimented and balanced with a dose of wheat, throughout this run full estery banana and clove flavors, molasses cookies, maybe even a hint of dark toasty malt in the finish, sugary from start to finish but the crisp noble hops kick in towards the end to offer some balance

d: a really nice weizenbock and I always appreciate the opportunity to try a new beer from Great Lakes, but it seems that including some yeast sediment might add some depth, very enjoyable regardless

This beer pours a cloudy brownish-amber color. The head is a coulpe inches in height, and recedes quickly into minimal lacing. The aroma is of banana, tangy wheat, and hints of clove. The taste is like the aroma, but magnified and with a slight alcohol presence. The mouthfeel is full bodied with lively carbonation, and a velvety texture. Overall, this is a really nice Weizenbock, that I would love to drink again.

A-beautiful translucent reddish copper colored beer. Thick tight head with huge retention coating the glass as it falls down the glass.

S-pretty big nose, very sweet. Some caramel malt comes in first with a bit of brown sugar. Sweet dark fruits set in next with plum and a touch of dark cherries

T-taste follows the nose, light caramel and brown sugar up front, a toasted malt sets the foundation, sweet dark fruits follow with ripe plum and dark cherries, notes of booze towards the finish and hints of honey.

M-medium to light bodied, extremely smooth with a syrupy texture, just enough carbonation, and a slightly dry finish.

D-extremely easy to drink, so smooth and tasty. Brings a nice mixture of tastes, another great Great Lakes beer...they are awesome!

12 oz. bottle.

Pours into the Aventinus glass a deep coppery amber with golden edges. Slight yeasty haze. Pinkie finger of dirty beige head. Not much lacing. Rich nose of sugary banana bread, Concord grape juice, yeasty cloves, a little bubblegum, and ripe plums. Smells like a good weizenbock to me.

Lightly toasted malt up front. Spicy hop flourish prologue to big fruity, yeasty, bready malts. Rummy banana bread, pear liqueur, Concord grapes, and sugary malts. Banana bitter finish with a flourish of spicy hops. Warming. Thick, wheaty, full body. Creamy feel. A very solid example of the style and dangerously drinkable on this cool summer day.

This poured a clear dark copper with some tan head. It smelled like banana and honey wheat and nutty malt, with some caramel. It tasted like honey wheat and banana nut breads, with some caramel and coriander and a bit of alcohol. It was watery with some carbonation, and had a bittersweet aftertaste. Overall this wasn't as thick or complex as Slam Dunkel, but it was cleaner and seemed more true to style. Alcohol was apparent but not too harsh, so this was still easy enough to drink. Decent beer but not anything great. (I think it takes a truly amazing weizenbock to impress me.)

More bock than weizen, strong on smooth, moderately roasted malt, but fell short on any yeasty notes I had hoped to come through with the wheat heritage. A touch harsh at the very end, with some rough ETOH, but otherwise a less distinctive beer than I expected.

I got this brew in a trade with projectflam86, Thanks Kyle!

12oz bottle served in a weiss glass.

Hazy orange/amber color with a light beige head that stayed around as a thin layer and came back with every swirl of the glass.
The smell is earthy and yeasty upfront but the sweet wheat malt is there in the background.
Starts out with a spiced wheat beer flavor until the sweet flavors of malt and dark fruit kicks in, leaving a sticky sweet after taste.
Medium bodied with good carbonation.
Goes down silky smooth.

Bottle pours a clear copper body with a medium sized beige head. The head falls quickly to a cap and leaves only some sparse patchy wisps of lace on the glass.

Aroma features spicy hops, ripe banana, clove, and white pepper.

Mouthfeel is about medium bodied, a bit thin for style. Nicely carbonated.

Taste mirrors the aroma. Clove and ripe banana are most prominent. Toffee, spicy hops, white pepper, and a sour apple note are also picked up.

Lacks the depth of better examples of the style, but nicely drinkable.

Guess I didn't quite make the best by date, but this has been stored cold most of the time.

A - Pours a deep coppery red with quite a bit of suspended material and two fingers of tan head. Head dissipates quickly with no lacing.

S - A pleasant sweet smell of candied sugar, some dark fruits, quite a bit of banana and some clove. Also a decent yeast presence as well.

T - Similar to smell, with more spice presence. Seems to have held up quite well. Alcohol presence is minimal. For such a big beer, there is a of a watery taste. Still nice though.

M - medium mouthfeel with a somewhat watery finish.

O - A nice weizen bock that has held up pretty well. Haven't had it fresh for comparison, but I would have this again.

A-Hazy dark reddish brown with a small off-white head. Nice retention that leads to decent lacing.

S-Hefty wheat malt and a touch of tartness. Dominate banana followed by a bit of clove. All of this backed up by an underlying sweetness.

T-Big bananna back wheat chewiness. Notes of spicy clove and a lemon background.

M-Medium body, super smooth and chewy. Long lasting flavour profile.

D-Well done. Certainly up there with some of the finest W-bocks I have had. Big, bold, chewy, flavourful and smooth...what more could you ask for. And the name...gotta love it...Ein Prosit!

Glad to finally see this in bottles. It pours a moderately hazy deep red color. At least it has that appearance. Backlighting reveals really nice scarlet highlights. It's capped with an off-white head that stands about a finger tall. It receded fairly quickly and left a lighter coat of lace behind.

The nose is good, but a little too tame. More strength would help. It kicks off with a nice spicy combo of clove and pepper. Smells like a few lighter spice varieties are present, but I can't identify them. There's a little banana coming through, but not enough. I'm hopeful that it's stronger in flavor. It features some light fruity notes (apple and pear). Dark fruit is a little further down the line, but there is a slight raisin-y smell. Yeast is very prominent throughout and adds a nice overall quality. Alcohol is easily noted and smells just a tad strong for an 8% beer. Smells good, but it could be better with a couple of tweaks.

The flavor profile's very consistent with the nose. Clove, light pepper, and other lighter spices kick it off. I like the spicy flavor a lot. However, there's not enough banana here to complement the spices. There's a little, but it needs more. I recall the growler I had a while back having much more of a banana presence. Kind of odd to run into a deficiency here. Apple, pear, and raisin appear in equal parts. I can't tell that any are stronger than others. It's yeasty, a little grainy, and features a nice earthy flavor. Alcohol is noted, but it isn't as strong as the nose suggested. I expected a slight warming effect, but it isn't here. This is good stuff. I like it. I'd like it more with a little more banana, but it's still an overall success in terms of flavor.

It features a medium body that's extremely smooth. Carbonation is mid-range, but doesn't interfere at all. Glockenspiel goes down incredibly smooth and easy. Very nice job here. Drinkability is good. The flavor is good, though not quite excellent. It's easy drinking, but it's not quite on par with the best Weizenbocks out there. At 8% abv, it's not too intimidating, but deserves some respect. I could handle a couple of bottles.

Glockenspiel is a damn good Weizenbock, but the bottled version doesn't live up to the on-tap variety. It seems to be lacking in the banana department. My earlier experience with a growler didn't share that problem and it was better. That's not to say this isn't good beer. Very good, in fact. I'm pleased to see it in bottles and will no doubt pick it up annually. The on-tap version is just superior, that's all.

One other point, this stuff absolutely smokes Grassroots Ale. If you have any hesitation picking it up due to a poor experience with Grassroots, let it go. This beer deserves a purchase. It's good stuff and far superior to Grassroots. Pick it up if you see it around.

Appearance - I'll agree with the label as to the general plum color. Lots of very fine sediment in suspension. Smallish head, reduces to nothing but a thin collar.

Aroma - roasty but sweetish grain, goes a touch metallic after a minute. Estery banana sports a little vapory alcohol touch as well. Nice peppery accents after some setup time.

Taste - big grainy malts, to the sweet side like a malt liquor. Way better, though. The clove and banana are intense, the abv making them even moreso. The flavors blend well and the swallow ushers in a nice warmth. The abv lends a spicy, sometimes peppery note. Finishes with lingering clove and banana.

Mouthfeel - notable heaviness and smoothness, middling carbonation.

Drinkability - an excellent beer from GL. These are too easy to knock back, it took some effort to save this last one for review.

Pours out a thin, wispy head, and the bubbles inside it quickly crackle away to a crown. Color is a hazy bronzed/rusty red. If memory serves, this is by far the reddest weizenbock I've ever laid eyes on. A longer-lasting head would've been nice, but the color is wonderful.

Aroma is fruity, somewhere between banana and cranberry. Malts are doughy, leaning on the sweeter side rather than the more bready/biscuity end. Lightly flowery spice, like hibiscus, works into the nose.

Banana is more prominent in the flavor, which also has a cinnamon roll vibe about it--doughy and sweetly spiced. Cinnamon stays around in the finish, as does a maltiness that recalls a freshly fried doughnut. Cherry still hangs around, offering tartness but nothing too sour. With some warming, the clove flavor promised on the label finally starts opening up. Alcohol offers a layer of warmth and spice to the overall flavor, not cloying and incorporated well.

Mouthfeel is not quite as fluffy as others I've had in this style, having a bit of stick and prickly carbonation dominating, although its medium body is just right for the flavor. An interesting feel that I can't quite put my finger on, but I know I like it.

Very nice, and an interesting take on this style--one which would take a few more meetings with to really wrap the taste buds around properly. Despite the 8%, this is a weizenbock I could sip on all night. Unique but simple...and certainly up to Great Lakes standards. Thanks to kels for her wonderful generosity!

$8.99 for a 4 pack. 8.0% ABV, 20 IBU. Pours out to a clear dark amber, forming a medium sized light yellow head which quickly fades, and doesn't leave much lace at all. Mild to moderate carbonation. The aroma is of banana bread with grain husk and residual sugars, some mild spicy noble hops and phenols. The mouthfeel is very soft and smooth with a medium dense body and slightly cloying, in a great way. The taste opens with the spice of cloves, and fades into a big amber malt body with some mild herbal bittering hops, followed by an aftertaste of husk, crackers,and bruised bananas. The alcohol isn't really all that perceptable, and it goes down way to easy for an 8.0 ABV beer.

A great weizenbock. Up there with Aventinus, although there are alot of Weizenbocks I've yet to try. Recommended.
