Poured from 12oz. bottle into a pint glass. Freshness date: 10/04/2011. This 6-pack was a couple months over the freshness date, but it was the only one they had cold in the store. I picked up another 6-pack (warm, on display) dated 02/22/2012. For now, I'm going to review the cold "expired" one while the fresh one gets cold. I'll edit the review if I notice a difference.

A: It's definitely a golden darker yellow-orange, and well deserving of the "gold" name. Slightly cloudy with a bit of sediment floating around the bottom, but only a small piece or two. Four fingers of head after an aggressive pour, good retention and nice lacing spiraling down the glass. Still at 2 fingers of head a full 2 minutes after the pour. I can't find anything wrong with the way this beer looks. It's gorgeous.

S: The smell is rather pleasant, not too faint, and not overpowering. Smells like a sweet malt with a hint of citrus. I don't think there's much I'd change about the nose on this, it's just about perfect.

T: Roasted malts, starts sweet and finishes with a lightly bitter dry hops and citrus. There is some complexity and depth to the flavor with a nice even balance between the various flavors. I've yet to try a beer with such a refined balance with nothing overpowering anything else. This is akin to a finely crafted piece of art, although since nothing really stands out, it leaves a great but not truly memorable experience. It's almost balanced to a fault.

M: Medium body, not too heavy or too light. Light carbonation, just enough to tickle the tongue, again, everything is just so nicely balanced here. The feel goes perfectly with the taste.

O: This is certainly a world class beer, and an amazingly solid dortmunder. At $8.99 a 6-pack, this is a surprisingly cheap world class experience. Makes me proud to be from Ohio, Great Lakes is a world class brewery that takes most others to school. You absolutely can't go wrong with this beer.

A: As the name suggests, it pours a bright gold hue with a small amount of carbonation. Thin head that doesn't much lacing if at all on the glass.

S: A little to be desired. A faint bready-grain wiff. Maybe some cereal. It's a pilsner, can't expect too much.

T: Extremely well balanced. The cereal is more assertive at first and then comes the sweetness from the malts. In the end, one can get a slight taste of booze, but it pairs well with the cereal.

M: Full-medium bodied. A little creamy from the carbonation. Leaves behind a small film in the mouth.

O: A simple but awesome pilsner by an always reliable brewery. There's nothing super extravagant about this beer, but it's pegged down the basics and it's done it well. Personally, I could drink this all day it's so smooth and good. If you're wanting to get into the pilsner style, start here.

A - clear gold, as the name suggests. I poured this at around 45 degrees (F) into a weissen glass. A thin white head quickly dissipated into a bit of lace; doesn't stick to the glass at all. Don't see much if any carbonation.

S - Cereal notes, a bit like a bowl of cheerios. Overall, not a lot coming forward on the nose.

T - Definitely malt forward, and the cheerios thing is coming through on the palate big time. Honey nut cheerios, to be precise. Not too sweet, though.

M - I'd say light to medium bodied; 2% milk range. It does coat the tongue for a while. A bit of tingle on the tip of the tongue, must be the missing carbonation.

O - The sweetness of this beer seems like it would pair well against something bitter, like some brussels sprouts or similar. My socks aren't exactly knocked off, but it's a solid beer that is very pleasant to drink.

One of my favorites.

A very clean taste with a some hop on the finish. Smells clean. looks clean, tastes clean.

And then what sets it apart is a nice, bready mouthfeel to give it substance.

One of my favorite beers in the style. Great lakes is probably one of the best breweries in the US
