I'm so happy GL finally decided to bottle this. Pour is light apricot in color with a good bit of haze. The head is two fingers of chunky white foam. On the nose I get a dank, hoppy aroma of grapefruit and pine with an herbal sage-like hint.
The beer has a medium body, a firm feel, and an extremely bitter flavor. Dry cracker-like malty notes hit you up front and then a harsh blast of hops scours your tongue. Big bitter notes of grapefruit, lemon, and hemp take center stage and never seem to let up. You definitely get the rye right in the back of the mouth and it seems to hit when you're most vulnerable - just as you swallow and your mouth starts to dry out. It supplants the hoppy bitterness with a spiciness that makes the beer taste more intensely bitter than it probably is. The finish is well-pronounced and goes on and on. The taste simply won't leave your mouth.
There's a lot to like about this beer. It has an intense bitter flavor that it makes no effort to mask. The only criticism I have is that it seems a bit unbalanced to me and could use a little more of a malt backbone. This is a really good beer and some BAs are going to fall in love with it. I do like it, but to me the gold standard of a beer like this is still Founder's Red's Rye with its fuller body and more balanced attack.
