Visiting GLBC for their anniversary, and I decided ahead of time that their anniversary beer had to be my first drink. I'd had it in the bottle and enjoyed it, so my expectations were high.
Appearance: Pours a golden honey-orange color with hints of amber when held to the light. Good transparency with little to no cloudiness. Short white head - less than a finger - disappears very quickly with very little lacing.
Smell: Very little smell to speak of, but I do notice some rich grain and malts before the head fades away.
Taste/Mouthfeel: Wow - the taste is very direct and pronounced, but not in an overpowering kind of way. All at once I'm getting the loud and clear presence of very flowery hops, bready grains, and toasty malts along with a subtley announced stringency of the alcohol. There's a slight bitterness balanced well by a little acidity provided by the moderate carbonation. I'm amazed that so many strong tastes at once aren't too much - the beer is surprisingly light and crisp, while somehow being slightly creamy and very, very smooth.
Drinkability: This beer is incredibly delicious and satisfying and goes down so, so easily. I enjoy trying to figure out all the different things I'm tasting as its complexity is well more than I imagined it would be. If the ABV weren't so high (and there weren't other pub-only exclusives to try), I would have drank this all night. Having it out of the bottle just won't compare now.
I had high expectations, and they were exceeded. This is exactly what I want and more out of a lager (says the ale drinker). Happy Anniversary, GLBC!
