Finally picked this up in a sampler pack from Copperfield's. Should've gotten a 4 pack, as this really pleasantly surprised me. Poured into a pokal glass.
A - Dark brown brew with auburn highlights supports a 2-finger beige head. Decent retention, minimal lacing.
S - Brown sugar, molasses, and roasted malt with just a touch of earthy hops. Faint notes of milk chocolate and anise.
T - Deeply roasted malt dominates at first, then the flavors from the nose show up in support. The finish has a nice bite of black coffee, and a slightly spicy hop kick. This is malt-heavy, but more complex than the other American doppelbocks I've tried.
M - Thin to medium body, but decent carbonation definitely helps. As a lager, this is within style, but could be a little richer. Finishes dry.
It's no Celebrator, but this is easily a top-notch American take on the style. Will definitely be buying this fresh next time it's released. Another fantastic offering from Great Lakes.
