The color is pretty typical of the style, though it's thickly clouded all the way through the body. Otherwise, it's kind of a honey-tinted medium orange. Off the tap, the head's having some trouble forming off a strong pour. It's fairly weak all in all, just a thin off-white foaming that rests lightly on top and just managing some light and sporadic blotching here and there on the walls of the glass.
Great Lakes got the style down right, finding the difficult balance among the complexity that marks it, which it also reaches. This beer also finds that hard-to-reach place of strength of yeast character within it depth, and it's neither too weak nor overdone. It contributes everything I expect and hope for: strong, but not overly sweet Belgian candi sugars, soft pear and banana with just a touch of sweet/tart apple flesh, just a hint of bubble gum, soft clove spiciness, and a dusty earthiness. Hops make an appearance and are added just enough to put some additional flavor and balance, more perfume-like in the nose and somewhat more floral on the tongue. It also has the dryness that eases in with a soft kind of musty/chalky element that really works in the beer's overall character.
The medium-full body holds together a certain heft and richness without getting too heavy, sticky or thick. It's semi-dry all the way, as the gentle chalkiness starts right up front in the feel rather than coming in toward the middle.

On tap at Great Lakes...

A- Pours a hazy golden orange color. One finger white head shows good retention. Long streaks of lace on the sides of the glass.

S- There is a huge amount of banana and corriander in the front of the aroma with hints of clove and peppercorn. Rock candi sugar and more orange comes through in the middle of the aroma. Belgian yeast dominates the ending of the nose.

T- There is a nice sweetness to the front of the beer. Pale malts and a rock candi sugary sweetness. Next comes the hints of the Belgian yeast...clove and banana most of all. Peppercorn and corriander do make appearances next in the overall flavor. The alcohol makes a sweet warming ending on this beer. Strong in flavor and to the point yet a little more complex at times.

M- Medium-heavy mouthfeel. Carbonation is good for the style. Belgian yeat, peppercorn, and clove are left on the palate. Aftertaste is banana, clove, warming alcohol, and pale malts in the background. Flavors were very well balanced and put together well. No off flavors were present when I was drinking this beer. Medium alcohol drying on the palate.

D- This beer was a nice surprise for sure. Great Lakes makes good beer but this one is more of a standout than the rest of the beers I have had from them. The higher ABV does limit the drinking on this but a nice sipper to have during dinner at the brewpub.

An very nice offering from Great Lakes Brewery and fairly standard for the style. Clove, coriander, banana, biscuit---Oh my! Nice nose. Alcohol up front with nice lacing around the glass, Belgian candy malts shine though. Nice mouth feel with light caramel notes and spice, peppery, with nice flavors from the yeast. Judging from the other reviews I am lucky to have this down in the Cincinnati area from Jungle Jims, and considering the price per glass I am even happier. Reminds me a La Guillotine from my favorite brewery Huyghe, which is a compliment. A favorite brewery of mine and a very nice brew that should be in a bomber or 4 pack. The Great Lakes Brewery is a treasure to Ohioans. Makes me yearn for a double dog dare if it were a Belgian Dubbel. HINT HINT!

Served on tap in a 10 oz. glass at the Great Lakes Brewing Co. Pub (basement level - must see), 2516 Market Ave. Cleveland, OH 44113.

A - A bright golden-straw color with slight head and minimal lacing.
N- Bright and floral, typical of the style, with Britanomices inherent.
T- Piquant, fruity and slightly sour at the same time. Very true to the style, but with a bit of a bitter finish, and not in a hoppy way. It posesses a bit less of the sweet, bubblegum nose and flavor characteristic of many Belgian Tripels.
M - Highly palatable, and easy to drink, despite the slightly bitter finish noted above. - It masks the 9.5% ABV very well.
O- While not the greatest American brewed, Belgian style Tripel I have sampled, it is very enjoyable to drink and a fair representation of the genre, leaning slightly to the sour/lambic style. According to the wait-staff, this is a pub-only brew; therefore I do recommend it if you have the opportunity.
