Might want to revisit the "retired - only brewed once" designation here, as a firkin of this was tapped in Cincinnati as of tonight. Seems to be a sporadic small-batch deal. Anyway, this was on tap at Wurst Bar In The Square in Mt. Lookout, and served in what appeared to be an odd cross between a pokal and a mug.
A: Slightly less dark than regular Eddie Fitz, so readily identifiable as a deep brown in color even in dim bar lighting. There was a short-lived tan head of a finger and a half when it arrived, and it left some moderate lacing on the glass.
S: So much coffee. This was practically like smelling a pot of brew freshly perking in the morning. The usual charred malt and dark chocolate flavors were present, but buried far beneath the coffee.
T: Interesting. Where the base Edmund Fitzgerald involves some smoke and charred wood flavors, those are almost completely gone in this version. The coffee flavors shift from hints of a dark roast to a full-fledged whammy of medium roast coffee, which rides atop the entire tasting process like an obese monarch atop a litter borne by scrawny, straining servants of charred grain and dark chocolate. Any hints of earthiness are subsumed entirely by the coffee.
M: Exactly like the base beer, oddly enough - eerily light for the color, without getting anywhere near too watery. Light and drinkable.
O: Great Lakes takes a winning world-class porter, and does it no disservice at all by cranking up the coffee levels. I would have this again.

On cask at The Pour House in Westmont, NJ.
Pitch black and completely opaque except for faint mahogany edges with a two finger, frothy beige head that slowly fades into a lasting cap/ring. Very good retention with some spotty lacing left behind.
Robust roasted dark malt aroma with a decent coffee presence but it isn't overpowering, letting the other notes come through. Gourmet roast with earthy nuttiness and a subtle lactic presence followed by roasted dark malt, burnt sugar, oatmeal, dark chocolate and toast. Subtle sweetness underneath. Coffee nicely integrated into the aroma of the base beer.
Medium bodied with a creamy nitro feel to it yet still manages to be a bit watery/thin. Decent amount of roasted malt and coffee flavor balanced by lactic cream and sweeter malt notes. Very dry and almost burnt up front but never overly acrid or harsh with hints of toast, deeply roasted espresso, dark chocolate and oatmeal followed by lactic cream and sweeter, silky chooclate notes. Subtle nutty earthiness with caramel and toffee sweetness. Well balanced but not very exciting. Decent coffee presence and pretty easy to drink but not an improvement on the base beer.

A very nice easy drinking beer. Especially if you like the big flavors associated with a porter/stout. But, it is not heavy and finishes fairly dry. Good mouth feel. Pleasing coffee/chocolate notes in flavor and smell. Tried it at Greatlakes Brewpub.
